Every time Osprey’s intro music plays, I wonder if it was written specifically w his neurodivergencies in mind, cause my AuDHD ass would need some shit like that.
Okay, rising up to the sound of your name in the crowd - take a sec to enjoy the fans losing their shit as you hit the top. Make your way through the crowd and remember the sound - get down that ramp, we’re on a schedule here. Looking out to the crowd, you’re making them proud - your ass better be up in that ring for your whole “ospreay ospreay” shit, don’t let them downnnn!
i still hate social media, though (long version)
nobody watched my farewell TikTok where I said I was leaving this place. what a perfectly on-brand ending for a TikTok hater. at least my disdain for the platform turned out to be mutual.
but here's the actual thing i keep circling back to: somewhere along the way, being liked stopped being a nice side effect of being yourself and became the entire product. you're not a person online anymore, you're a brand. your face, your voice, your little quirks, your pain even — all of it gets optimized for engagement. you have to be likeable the way a product has to be marketable. consistent. appealing. easy to consume. easy to scroll past without friction.
and i don't see freedom in that. not even a little bit. i see a cage with really good lighting.
there's this pressure — not even subtle anymore — to perform a version of yourself that's palatable to strangers. smile more. be relatable but not too much. be vulnerable but in a curated way. be authentic, but make sure the authenticity performs well. it's the popular girl from every teen movie, except now everyone's expected to run her playbook, all the time, forever, for an audience that never stops watching.
i already brought up nosedive. i think about that episode more than is probably healthy, because it didn't feel like satire to me. it felt like a slightly exaggerated documentary.
so no. i'd rather be the moody grump who never adapted to any of it. i'd rather log off than clock in for the performance. that's my statement, my refusal, my one small form of freedom in a system that keeps trying to package me as content.
i have my family, and i know that's a privilege — a real one, not a small one. it protects me from needing the approval of everyone outside it. i lean on that a lot, especially since i'm not built for constant sociability, constant availability, constant likeability. i don't know if that makes me antisocial or just anti-that-specific-theatre. maybe there isn't a clean line between the two.
what i do know is that the theatre itself feels like a kind of violence, quiet and normalized, especially with my neurodivergency in mind. it asks for a performance i can't sustain and calls the exhaustion a personal failing instead of what it actually is — an unreasonable demand. i can't be free inside a system that requires me to be liked in order to be safe, seen, or successful. i need approval to function in it, and needing approval is exactly the thing i can't stand about it.
so — f@ck it. i still rebel like a teenager, i know it's a little ridiculous at almost thirty-whatever, but the feeling is real and i'm done being embarrassed by how real it is.
the need to be likeable is a prison. i don't say that for shock value. i mean it plainly. it's a set of walls built out of other people's approval, and you never actually own the key.
and yeah — i'm sad about it. not performing sadness for the post, just sad. sad that the alternative to the cage looks like isolation. sad that not wanting to be a product still costs something. i don't have a tidy ending for this one. some days the grump wins and it feels like freedom. some days it just feels lonely. both are true at once, i think.

"You shouldn't use empathy to mean kindness / caring for others / etc."
I still see this is still a really popular perspective, and, as someone that used to have this perspective, I want to offer a different one.
So many spaces that consider themselves advocacy spaces, specifically white ones, have normalized nitpicking language with the overall idea that it is somehow helpful. It isn't, it just creates a scenario where only certain individuals have their voices heard and treated as valid. There is no universe where someone can nitpick language like this without insisting everyone adhere to a specific cultural understanding.
It also distracts from what is actually important; what is being said, why it is being said, and actually focusing on the lived experiences of others. Unless someone is using a literal slur, nitpicking language does nothing but create discourse that ultimately helps no one except the majorities that have no issue adhering to this nitpicking.
The word "empathy", particularly when used to express how one is not given empathy, is an important word for different minorities to express how it is normalized to not sit with their pain and experiences the way one would with others. There are many other words like this, which is why context is so important.
As someone who lacks empathy in the sense of not feeling other's emotions as my own, I do understand the knee jerk reaction based on past experiences. However, that doesn't mean it's right to become so focused on a word one no longer listens to what the other people around them are trying to say.
I hate it so much when someone is spreading awareness about casual and normalised ableism and a neurotypical says some shit like "erm actually, asking people who act weird how they feel about trains isn't ableist, it's not malicious, it's just a joke" like, hey so actually this is not your fucking call to make and your opinion on whether it's offensive or not doesn't really matter, hope this helps
