Compulsive Hoarding (an Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorder)
Hoarding is the persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. Hoarding disorder affects an estimated 2% to 6% of the U.S. population. (clevelandclinic.org)
“Someone who hoards may exhibit the following:
Inability to throw away possessions
Severe anxiety when attempting to discard items
Great difficulty categorizing or organizing possessions
Indecision about what to keep or where to put things
Distress, such as feeling overwhelmed or embarrassed by possessions
Suspicion of other people touching items
Obsessive thoughts and actions: fear of running out of an item or of needing it in the future; checking the trash for accidentally discarded objects
Functional impairments, including loss of living space, social isolation, family or marital discord, financial difficulties, health hazards (adaa.org)”
“Compulsive hoarding includes ALL three of the following:
A person collects and keeps a lot of items, even things that appear useless or of little value to most people, and
These items clutter the living spaces and keep the person from using their rooms as they were intended, and
These items cause distress or problems in day-to-day activities.”
“Some estimate that as many as 1 in 4 people with OCD also have compulsive hoarding. Recent research suggests that nearly 1 in 5 compulsive hoarders have non-hoarding OCD symptoms (iocdf hoarding fact sheet).”
Hoarding vs. Normal Clutter and/or Collecting
“Simply collecting or owning lots of things does not mean someone has HD. A major feature of HD is the disorganized nature of the clutter — in most cases, the living spaces can no longer be used for everyday living as they were intended.“ (x)
oh yeah i got one!!
WHY
Yknow that thing where like your parents don't believe you have a mental illness and they think you're just making it up even though you know yourself really well and then even when you get the diagnosis they deny that you got the diagnosis and they're like "no she didn't say you had OCD she was just acting like you did things that are really OCD" when the psychiatrist literally tells you "it looks like you have OCD." And it's like ?????? They try to minimize your illnesses and act like they're nothing because they haven't noticed your symptoms themselves so they say they must not exist???? Cuz yeah me too same
fuck compulsions

i hate how neurotypicals have taken the term "intrusive thoughts" and interpreted as though it simply means "bad thoughts". while yes, all intrusive thoughts are bad thoughts, not all bad thoughts are intrusive thoughts.
so if you bring up one of your intrusive thoughts to these people who also claim to have them they'll literally just say you're trying to be edgy or call you a p*do for having,,, intrusive thoughts.
like that's the whole point. we don't like having them. they're severely disturbing. what do you think "intrusive" means? they are not at all enjoyable. it's not some sick, violent and/or perverse fantasy we secretly dream of living out one day. if that were the case, that'd be a completely different issue.
for mine at least, it's usually not even about me being the cause of such suffering. rather it is intense, vivid, and persistent fears of those i love suffering through the same sort of trauma and abuse i did, or even worse than that. and my mind gets unfortunately graphic with the imagery. and it never stops.
