For the eridian culture which sound and songs are so important, they have this idea that if you find all your soulmates (platonic or romantic) you can create an harmony with their songs, an harmony unique for each eridian.

For Rocky is easy to know that Adrian is the one, because their mere presences, the way they move and sing is just right, it is the melody that Rocky had been chasing since he knew about soulmates. After finding his romantic soulmate Rocky - thinking that there was no way that the song that Adrian produced could be better- assumes that he was destinate to only have a romantic soulmate and that his harmony is already complete.

It isn't until he is deep in the space, far away from Adrian and everything he has known, that Rocky discovers that the hearbeat of Grace turns to be another piece of his harmony.

When they get to Erid and Rocky is able to present his platonic soulmate to his romantic one he can finally hear the harmony that he didn't know he was longing for.

My brain just keeps thinking about the fact that Bilbo is a posh gentleman in comparison to much of the Shire.

Grace had like, meant to tell Carl but, hey, when you're trying to figure out astrophage you sorta, forget to mention that...and just initiate the "I'm very small right now and your lap is more comfortable than the dumb lab floor"

Carl is definitely surprised when Grace just gets all cozy on his lap but, at this point, the suns dying, Stratt has a middle school teacher name the energy dots and now said middle school teacher is on his lap, playing with his tie...well Carl is just going with the flow xD

Stratt probably calls him because Grace isn't answering and is like, "where is Dr. Grace?? I've been trying to call him for the last 5 minutes."

Carl glances down at the sleepy Grace who, for the last five minutes has been babbling to Carl about why cherry twizzlers were superior to strawberry twizzlers.

"He’s uh...taking a break."

There's a soft huff over the phone.

Grace's head lifts up.

"Hi Miss Stratt! Did you know that Carl thinks strawberry twizzlers are better than cherry?? What's your favourite?" Grace ask, bouncing a little bit on Carl's lap.

There's a long pause.

"...cherry does tend to have a less artificial flavour."

Grace grins, "see?? That's what I was tellin' him!!"

Carl clears his throat as he holds the phone back to his ear.

"So...Grace will call you bac-"

I mean, isolateion confinemented is know to have effects in the psyche of people, humans are social animals after all, and I don't think that Stratt have accounted the possibility that only one of the astronauts would make it. I thing that even in her calculated mind, she was blind by the pressure of having to make the project work as fast as it could, or she was too confident about the solution she found with the induced coma (at least in the book she had the back up of the coma resistant gen). At least in the movie Grace's hads the "Don't go Crazy room", in the book Hail Mary is more minimalistic, it is a lab, the rooms, storage and the cabin of control, nothing more.

But in those first logs/videos Grace is completely alone, confuse and without a single memory, not able to remember why is he here, what is the mision, what was his task, all that been waste time, because he had to figure it out all by himself, and the plan was for someone to be there to guide him.

Eva Stratt must have been so stress out, what if the bettles doesn't have nothing more than videos/logs of Grace losing his mind in space?What if he just sent the bettles without thinking in a irrational episode? What if the solitude make him give up before he could find a solution for th astrophage problem?

Even a bright mind in solitude can get twisted, they can break and she would have see her only hope slowly lost himself before he could even do his job, his sacrifice would have meant for nothing, her actions would have meant for nothing.

Rocky learns the concept of “good morning” isn’t about time—it’s about care, and starts sending it whenever Grace wakes up, no matter the ship’s cycle.

Grace keeps a running list called “Things Rocky Made Better Without Trying,” and it gets updated way too often to stay serious.

Rocky figures out which of Grace’s jokes mean “I’m okay” and starts responding faster to those specifically.

Grace once says “good job, buddy,” and Rocky treats it like a formal achievement worth remembering forever.

During the four year trip to Erid, They both stop thinking of the ship as equipment and start thinking of it as something they’re taking care of together.

Grace starts saying “we did it” even when Rocky did 99% of the work, and Rocky never corrects him.

Grace starts labeling some of Rocky’s messages as “made my day,” even though Rocky doesn’t know what that means in measurable terms.

Rocky learns that repeating reassurance twice makes Grace visibly calmer, so he quietly builds that into his communication style.

While on Erid, Grace realizes Rocky always positions himself slightly between Grace and unfamiliar areas, not out of danger response anymore—but out of habit of care.

Grace starts resting a hand on Rocky’s suit shoulder while talking, like it’s the most natural punctuation in conversation.
