Some odds and ends about Abolish private property…
Now that the fic is done, I’m clearing out my notes from my docs and wondered if it might be interesting to someone else. Like the director’s commentary on the DVD menu that you never watch lol
I had a plot point addressing why Shane didn’t hire a property manager, and I just straight up forgot to add it to the fic 😭
In his very first Reddit post, one of my planned comments was to have someone recommend that Shane hire a property manager instead of managing the building himself. Shane would then respond that he wanted to take on the challenge of it to see if he could do it.
Unfortunately, the Reddit section turned out to be so hard to code that I plumb forgot about this whole thing. By the time I remembered, I was several chapters deep and felt like it would be too big of a retcon to add it in after the fact. I tried to include some of what I originally planned into Shane’s final Reddit post as a fix. It’s still the biggest plot hole of the whole fic lol.
The Reddit usernames were some of my favorite bits to come up with, along with pairing profile pictures to go with each name
boo-hoo-tao (this one makes me laugh now because the game it references, Genshin Impact, wouldn’t come out till 2020, and the chapter is set in 2018)

As a student, I once waited six months for my landlord to fix my microwave…
…so when people left comments about shane taking 3 months to fix Marc’s sink I was genuinely shocked by the reaction lmao.
How did I heat up food for those months? I boiled a pot of water and stuck my bowl of food in it and steamed it with the lid on.
Yuna’s emails were based on my current landlord’s emails chewing us out for leaving bicycles in the hall
By far not the worst landlord I’ve ever had (please see above about the microwave), to be clear. But I imagine yuna would absolutely use that funky passive aggressive corpo landlord speak. To be fair to my landlord, it do be a fire hazard to leave things in our very narrow hallways lol.
Beyond the fact that she’s bi, Katie’s inclusion of ‘lgbtq+ friendly’ in her roommate listing was meant to be about social change between 2013 to 2018
Not intended to be a 100% accurate reflection of Canadian social rights from that period lol. Mostly because I’m not Canadian and have only been there maybe… twice in my life.
Moreso reflecting my personal experience growing up in that time period; in 2013 I was just finding out that being gay was a thing, and by 2018 it felt like people were much more free to be themselves. Nowadays I find it’s super common to list something like that in a roommate post (noting that I live in a very large and progressive city) but I can’t imagine that was the case in 2013.
The title is a quote from the communist manifesto, but in reality I got it from a naruto OC fic 😭
Abolish Private Property by iaso and sage_thrasher. One of the foundational texts in my fanfic library that really opened my eyes to the things you can do with fanfic.
There’s a double layer to this with the fact I started writing fanfic through Naruto crossovers, and one of my current long fics is a Naruto OC fic. Heated Rivalry was only ever meant to be a fun side project to defeat some writers’ block and somehow Landlord Shane is now my most popular work 😭😭 even the pseud I made for my heated rivalry stuff is so dumb 😭😭
No original ideas! The whole fic is based on this tumblr post
…by bluegrasshole about what it would be like if Sidney Crosby was your landlord. It’s in the authors’ notes of the fic, but every now and then I come across a comment that’s like ‘oh this reminds me of that one tumblr post!!’ Plssss I’m one of you !!!
