How is the mutant gene carried down?
I'd assume itd be on the mothers side for theres more script of the x-chromosome for the genetic code howevers thats apparently not the case in one movie
i think its pyro he says "he found out the males are the one that carry the mutant gene so actually its his fault" to bobbys dad i presume, and im js wondering if this was retconned because it may not be the case when it comes to nightcrawler.
I'm not gonna argue as to where the gene is dominant or recessive, i think it may be recessive. But good ol nightie definitley gets his blue from mystique, and since from what I know his father is Azrael is also a mutant with similar powers and i guess the tail so he may get it from there- BUT THEN azrael being kurts father WAS retconned SO he does get it from mystique???
You could also talk about rachel summers powers being similar to jeans. or nocturne (if you count her) in regards to telepathy, hexbolts and body posession which could be linked to wanda.
you know it is a very real possibility that pyro js said that to bitch to bobbys dad (and lowk deserved), but i also think this has probably been talked on before i js find it interesting
I think there's still some truth to the idea it's passed down from the father. When taking into account all the mutants whose parents we know of, (mainly Mystique's and Wolverine's respective kids) they usually get their powers from their father if they don't get entirely new powers. I do think blue is just a dominant color gene in mutants as we see quite a few blue mutants that aren't related.
All of Wolverine's kids (that I can think of) have claws of some kind and when both parents are mutants the kid tends to get either a mix of the powers, (Kitty & Colossus' kids in that one universe and Logan and Emma's daughter in that other universe) both with one being a secondary mutation, (Raze and Ruby, I think) or (rarely) no powers at all (Graydon Creed). Nocturne mostly got her dad's looks and her mom's powers + some extra, but I feel like she's an outlier since whether Wanda's a mutant or not depends on the whims of the universe and whoever's on the writing team that day.
It's also worth noting that when retconning Azazel as Nightcrawler's father, they confirmed Mystique shapeshifted into a man to conceive Kurt, but altered her own genes to make sure he looked like Azazel to make Azazel think some prophecy was going to be fulfilled or something. I really don't like Azazel's existence as a whole, honestly, I wish the writers would just erase him from the universe and let Kurt just have the symbolism he was meant to in the first place. Azazel took a lot away from that. My tangent aside, what I'm getting at is Nightcrawler still got his powers from his... I guess false father, and Destiny's genes didn't even try.
I do like to think the powers themselves can be dominant or recessive. Like telepaths are so common because it's a dominant ability. Of course Jean's kids more or less disprove what I've said above, but still food for thought. There's also more to be said about how the powers that get passed down aren't the exact same as the parents, (like Nightcrawler having a 2 mile limit and Azazel not, or Raze's shapeshifting being more limited than Mystique's, or Ruby having a ruby form instead of a diamond form, the list goes on) but that's a whole other thing.
