Oh yeah that sounds awesome. I started learning cw a few months ago and then fell off so I basically need to restart. The ft891 is my first and only radio and I got it with the mindset that prioritized doing the most amount of things first and ease / speed second which I think was the right call but it does increase the activation energy I need to actually get on the air. My ideal next step would be to learn cw get a small qrp radio and just be able to get set up quickly with ft8 as a secondary.

absolutely understand, my first was a TruSDX because I just wanted something cheap that could do CW. my second was an X6100 because I wanted something that could do HF and didn't fucking suck. my current rig is the FT-857d because I got a good deal on it at hamvention and I wanted something relatively light, all band, all mode, 100 W, with a detachable head, and functioning in the cold so I could do mobile HF and SOTA/POTA with it.
