Something I like about the Project Hail Mary movie upon rewatch is that they build on Grace's cowardice by making him avoid acknowledging death at every possible moment. He can't say he won't let Ilyukhina and Yao "die in vain" when he gives them a funeral; he cuts himself off before he says it. He uses euphemisms for death when he admits to Rocky he's on a suicide mission. He downplays the scariness of the astrophage situation to his class. He's uncomfortable with the conversation about how the astronauts will kill themselves (both when Stratt first explains it to him, and later when he meets them). When he's talking about Rocky's inevitable taumoeba leak, he leaves Rocky's inevitable fate as a result of it implied and unspoken. Pretty much the only time he outright talks about death is when he's begging them to not kill him as they pin him down and knock him out.
