All I've Ever Wanted (Is You) (Human AU; misunderstanding)
Rated: M, 2/6 chapters posted (started 4/16/2026)
They met at Ana and Newtβs pre-wedding party. Aziraphale remembers being absolutely stunned by Crowleyβs good looksβand mortified by his coarse language. That only lasted until they began a hilarious (and frankly unhinged) conversation about the intelligence of dolphins and whales, and something about the kraken, if memory serves. From that moment on, they have been nearly inseparable.
That was five years ago. These days, Aziraphale frequently slips onto a bar stool and keeps Crowley company for a few hours while he works a slow shift at an upscale Mayfair pub, and Crowley spends many a lazy day lounging in Aziraphaleβs bookshop in Soho.
But thereβs nothing more to it than that. Because Aziraphale and Crowley are merely friends. Theyβve never been more than friends. They never will be.
Of course not.

Thereβs another piece of meta thatβs been on my mind lately. Iβve seen a number of comments from people who liked the ending of S3 because, in their view, it was a big "stick it to God" moment. The sentiment seems to be, "Yay! We got an atheist universe. Thatβll really show Her." If thatβs your interpretation, I genuinely encourage you to engage with this post, because I have some questions. Iβm not trying to be snarky. I really want to understand how you arrived at that conclusion.Β
First of all, do you realize that the new godless universe only exists because She allowed it to happen?Β
To me, saying the ending "stuck it to God" feels a bit like saying, "Yeah, my boss let me take the day off. I really showed him." No... you didn't. For almost the entire story, everything unfolds exactly according to Her plan. Then, right at the end, the new universe feels less like a victory and more like a consolation prize, a participation trophy. It comes across as God saying, "Yep, I got everything I wanted. Sorry, you never stood a chance. I know, very sad. Here, have one wish to make up for it."Β
I genuinely struggle to see how that's interpreted as defeating Her.
That struggle is further compounded by the fact that religion still exists in the new universe.
If the new universe is meant to be our universe, and there's graffiti depicting angels and demons, then that lore has to come from somewhere. Which raises another question: are Aziraphale and Crowley actually free from Heaven and Hell?Β
The only difference is that, before, Heaven and Hell loomed over them in a very literal sense. Now Heaven and Hell loom over them the same way they've loomed over humanity throughout history: through persecution, inquisitions, witch trials, sexism, homophobia, indoctrination, zealotry, religious wars, and countless other forms of oppression. In that sense, they're still not free from Heaven and Hell. Nobody is. So what exactly was the sacrifice for?Β Β
And let me please remind you: Aziraphale and Crowley had absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe their God was benevolent. This is the same God who was perfectly comfortable drowning children in the Flood. The same God who sanctioned the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The same God who signed off on the deaths of Job's children. And that's only the material directly referenced by the show. Expand beyond that, and we're talking about the God who killed every firstborn child in Egypt to punish a Pharaoh. The omniscient, omnipotent being who witnessed the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Holocaust, the transatlantic slave trade, and every act of sexual violence in human history, yet never lifted a finger to stop any of it. And if we're embracing the interpretation that free will was an illusion all along, that She was secretly orchestrating everything from the beginning, then the implications of all of those events become... yikes.Β
By that point, in my opinion, any interpretation of the finale that relies on God suddenly being trustworthy, benevolent, merciful, or compassionate in any way just falls flat for me. That God? Thatβs the God youβre wholeheartedly trusting to give us a βbetter universeβ?
Well, then I have a bridge to sell you.Β
My own interpretation is that the new universe is essentially the Job wager on steroids. In both the show and the biblical story, God makes a wager with Satan that's basically, "He's so loyal that I can destroy his entire life and he'll still worship me." The ending feels like the same wager, just scaled up to encompass an entire universe.Β
"I'll create a universe where I don't even participate. I won't perform miracles. I won't answer prayers. I won't reveal myself. Itβll be as if I donβt exist. And look, these plebs STILL worship me."Β
That motivation feels far more consistent with the egotistical deity we've been shown throughout the series than the idea that She suddenly had a change of heart and decided to give everyone a genuinely better universe.Β
Which brings me back to my original question: did they really stick it to God?Β
Because from where I'm standing, the only character who truly got everything she wanted was Her. Her plan succeeded. She retired (or evaporated herself) on her own terms. She created a universe where she doesn't even have to exist, yet billions of people still worship her. That's not getting owned. That's having your cake and eating it too.Β
If I were writing an ending intended to stick it to God, then God would actually have to lose. A lot of fans suggested ending things with a card game. That could've worked. Others suggested using Jesus as an active character, having him stand up to his mother the way Adam stood up to Satan, and then having Adam and Jesus build a genuinely better world together. That would've been sticking it to God. Or, I dunno, they had the Book of Life in their friggin hands. They summoned Her with it. They could have just as easily told her to bugger off with it. Donβt know why that didnβt occur to them.
But having an arguably sociopathic deity get everything she wanted, voluntarily step away from creation, leave behind a universe where she's still worshipped, and leave the protagonists living in a world that's still fundamentally shaped by religion...Β
No matter how hard I squint, how far I tilt my head, or how much I try to read between the lines, I still can't see how that's "sticking it to God," and Iβm not even fully convinced theyβre free from Heaven and Hell.Β

For ten summers, famed sci-fi author Anthony J Crowley and literary darling Aziraphale Fell return to Northwoods, a prestigious writing institute tucked beside a Minnesota lake.
Every year they sit on the same dock and watch the herons.
Year after year, their friendship becomes the fixed point around which both their lives quietly turn.
Crowley spends a decade believing Aziraphale is his best friend.
Aziraphale spends a decade believing Crowley will never love him back.
They are both wrong.
A story about friendship becoming love, summer traditions, patient birds, one very important dock, and two middle-aged idiots who take ten years to figure out what they mean to each other.
This is a human AU featuring mutual pining, middle-aged romance, and a happy ending.
My heartfelt thanks to @thinkinginscripts for helping me figure out what story I really wanted to tell. Somewhere along the many conversations we had about it I realized that, beneath the writing institute, the lake, and ten summers of friendship, this was ultimately a love story.
Thank you as well to @thinkinginscripts and @maon25 for beta reading and much thoughtful feedback throughout the writing process.

Sadly, the bad writing started at the end of season 2, not in the finale/'season 3'.
We knew, deep down, that Aziraphale was OOC when he asked Crowley to go to heaven with him. That's why we had a lot of theories and we were waiting for season 3 to confirm any of it. There was no way that Aziraphale could think that The Metatron 'wasn't so bad'. There was no way that he could said that heaven was 'the side of light/truth' when they had punched him and afterwards tried to kill him, and kill humanity. There was no way he could think Crowley would want to go back to heaven as an angel.
I never believed the coffee theory, of course, but the scene was so OOC that I thought it was some kind of performance for the Metatron. I trusted it would be explained.
And the OOC is more than the final 15'. Michael was threating Aziraphale to erase him from The Book of Life and Crowley didn't even flinch? Comfortable much in Aziraphale's couch? The same protective demon that almost made Jim jump out a window because he threatened Aziraphale before? I also thought that he knew something about The Book of Life, like he had it hidden or something. He goes from 'extreme sanctions don't exist' to really worried about Aziraphale being erased in the first part of season 2, to no worried at all in the last episode, to 'I know everything about the book of life' in the Finale. It's bonkers.
Yeah, I don't think enough is said about how Crowley was OOC too at end of s2 - as well as doing nothing about the Book of Life threat, he is also completely fine with Aziraphale going off to have a chat with the Metatron (despite Aziraphale's clear discomfort). He has so little care about it that he's started planning breakfast at the Ritz.
He knows about the second apocalypse, he knows what Heaven is like, so why isn't he worried about Aziraphale? And he then starts a love confession before he has even asked what the Metatron wanted. I don't believe it.

A Summer Omens Big Bang collab by @maon25 (art) and me (story)
Now posting in instalments on AO3!
Summary:
Itβs summer once more in Kensington Gardens.
The white marble statue of an Angel, half hidden under a canopy of trees, is content enough with his life, his animal friends in the park, the here and now.
Until an unusual Black Nightingale lands on his left wing and sings to him stories of woe, of mystery, of a dear friend lost, of his quest to find the love of his life again.
Every summer, the Nightingale, who remembers only fragments of what really happened to himself and his long-lost soulmate, revisits the Marble Angel, having gathered more hints and β¨Cluesβ¨ to help his quest. The Angelβs marble heart melts with empathy for him, and with other feelings that seem new - but are they?

you know a lot of actors find a particular niche to inhabit when it comes to their roles but you really gotta hand it to David Tennant for somehow landing the absurdly specific category of βimmortals that rebelled against their oppressive and bureaucratic people because they accidentally became too fond of the human race and also have a quasi-telepathic bond with a vehicle.β

what if everyone was comforted by the finale? if there was no fight over who is in the right, just as we were all united in pain after s2? if everyone was happy, including them and including us? if that 90 minutes gave us what we were hoping for? if the finale wasnt so cold and heartless and instead loving and tender? if they actually ended up in their south downs cottage and there were nightingales and we would actually see it and they would be free and happy and-

And I realized something else (yes, Iβm very insightful today, ok?). They stole my fantasy.
I was happily hiding myself from the horrors of the world (very real horrible horrors we are currently living in this dystopian world) in my lovely fantasy world with angels and demons who could fall in love, with kids who could stop Armageddon, with witches who predicted the future and witchfinders who fell in love with them.
But they (those horrible cishet men) took that fantasy world and erased it and made it to never have existed at all. And replaced it with you know what? The horrible dystopian world of horrors we live in.
They (those horrible cishet men) must feel very smug thinking they are very clever, but if I wanted to see a story about the fucking real universe, the one where thereβs no magic, I wouldnβt be watching and reading fucking fantasy, you know? They missed their target audience.
I know I like to put here some nice gif of the boys but... I just want to watch everything burn rn.
I am going to have to agree. Because I want a world thatβs a lot better than this one. A world where an angel might casually cast a blessing upon me, or a demon might make sure a bully gets their comeuppance. I want to live in THAT world.
The writers of S3 took every wonderful thing away from us. The magic, the power, the possibility. Not to mention 6000 years of slow burn.
Aziraphale and Crowley got no payoff for the patience and the pain of their devotion. Asa and Anthony know nothing about their relationship or their impossible lives.
Good Omensβthe story, the characters, the fansβdeserved a better ending. But that was never the plan. The only plan was to end at the Ritz. The rest was conjecture.
Weβre probably better off using a Create Your Own Adventure approach. Season One is canon. After that, dream of whatever you like best.
I just read Happy Accidents, and oh my god, I have a new all-time favourite Good Omens fic. I started reading it accidentally last night (a happy accident of my own hehe) and stopped 2 hours later in the middle of the night realising I had finished all 14 chapters like wtf. It was so so good though, I loveee how you write Aziraphale's voice. Im loving the slow burn so much, I thought I'd come say hi.
oh my god iβm dying from all these complimentsππππ«Άπ«Άπ«Ά
an all-time favourite GO fic? iβve officially made it in life, this is all iβve ever wantedπ₯Ή thank you SO so much, i am literally smiling like an idiot right now, i am so HONOURED!!!!
many helloβs from here!!

"Didn't you have a flaming sword?"
"Erm..."
"Yes you did, it was flaming like anything, what happened to it?"
"I- uh...."
"Lost it already, have you?"
"I gave it away..."
"You WHAT?!!"
"I gave it away!!!"
I saw a post a week or two ago, somewhere in the GO3 tag, talking about how fans need to realize that writers don't owe them a "happy ending." Or any specific character resolution, story resolution, etc. Obviously referring to the notion the people upset about GO's finale needed to remember that they weren't entitled to the sort of ending they wanted, and there was nothing wrong with the story as it ended up concluding.
And I agree! Sort of. Meaning, I agree with the idea that people aren't entitled to a story working out the way they personally want.
BUT.
In my admittedly limited time hanging out in this fandom, I don't think that's what I've seen. It's certainly not what I personally experienced in my own viewing of the finale.
While it's perfectly reasonable to say that people aren't entitled to stories working out the way they want, I think it's just as reasonable to say that they are allowed to expect a story to function and resolve following its own internal rules. They are allowed to assume a story will maintain its genre, follow through with its message, address loose threads in a way that makes sense within its established logic.
It's not "entitled" to be weirded out and disappointed when your whimsical, fun, satirical comedy-with-a-dash-of-romance suddenly veers wildly off-course and ends up awkwardly metamorphosing into a nihilistic tragedy. It's not petty or whiny to be sad about characters you've known and loved for years being destroyed so suddenly and unexpectedly. Falling in love with a story that - for decades - has had a specific, uplifting, accepted thematic message, only to be upset when that message is abruptly tossed out and replaced with something wildly different isn't the same as demanding writers bend to your will.
Isn't that the point of choosing a genre, or an established fiction? If I want to watch something scary, I'll seek out horror. If I want something heartwarming, I'll go for... I dunno... a Pixar movie or whatever. That's not me demanding things or being entitled; it's me making a choice about what I want to see based upon the established characteristics of specific bits of media.
People aren't upset just because they didn't get the kiss they wanted; they're upset because they decided to watch GO3 with the understanding that this piece of fiction was built around a specific sort of theme and vibe and wholesome message - based upon an established canon - and then they were smacked upside the head with something entirely different.
It was disorienting for me, and I've just been partaking in this fandom for a few months. I can't even imagine how shocking and jarring it was for people who've been here for years.
