There's a new man in the neighbourhood, one with wavy auburn hair that flows to the middle of his back. Lithe and lean, he is a vision, and Aziraphale can't stop watching him as he walks the pavement, going in and out of the local bawdy house.
The Angel Who (Almost) Got Away

Now, more than two decades later, Crowley hears a familiar sultry voice reading some of the filthiest smut he's ever heard, and he wonders if he might have a second chance with the angel who got away.
Crowley has left a string of broken hearts in his dating wake, and his best friend, Aziraphale, has had it. Crowley claims it’s not his fault, and swears he doesn’t lead anyone on. It isn’t as if he is promising them anything, he’s just taking them on dates.
Aziraphale points out that the two of them have been friends for years, and yet he isn’t in love with Crowley, but Crowley insists that if they were dating that might change. So they make a bet—Crowley will romance Aziraphale for two weeks so he can see what it’s like to be the object of Crowley’s affection. It will give Aziraphale a chance to figure out why everyone falls in love with the man.
They’ve known each other for years. Nobody’s worried about falling in love.
Maybe they should be.

I loved witnessing the relationship between them blossom; the story was tender and hot at the same time. But what will happen when aziraphale has to travel back to London?

Crowley has come to accept that he might need help to find a lifelong partner; unfortunately there seems to be something quite wrong with all three candidates Aziraphale introduces him to. Zero angst, this fic is heartwarming and adorable.

I loved it.
Enemies to lovers, forced proximity human AU. Crowley is a rockstar in need of a lyricist. Enter erotica writer Aziraphale.
The humour throughout the story was a treat and more than once I got looks from my fellow commuters because I was giggling or snorting laughter.
Crowley and Aziraphale's slow journey into introspection was very sweet to witness.
I'm always partial to fictions that feature the Them and Warlock, and their characterisation here was spot on and really entertaining; I will love Hermiola's Warlock for life!
This story was captivating, entertaining, sexy, incredibly funny, and made me want to read more whenever I had to put it down. Virtually no angst. A new classic!
To Catch A Ghost, by anatomicgirl. Rated T, 17k. P. Feb 25.
Such an intriguing ghost story! Spooky and sweet in equal measure. Human AU in which friends Aziraphale and Crowley are vloggers dealing with paranormal phenomena. On their way to Tadfield they find themselves stuck alone in a cottage belonging to an old lady and her niece. Even skeptic Crowley has to eventually concede that the cottage is haunted. Obliviousness in action, this fic was lovely!

Honestly, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved this story. In my comment on the last chapter I said that it was like an unexpected day off at work: precious, exciting, comfortable, you know it will be over all too soon but it’s one of those gifts that make life happier. In this enemies (meh!) to friends (ha!) to lovers (yay!) Crowley and Aziraphale work as advice columnists for two rival newspapers in Tadfield. The newspapers are bought by the same media company and our two heroes find themselves co-hosting a podcast. How will they cope? Oh, they’ll cope very well indeed, let me tell you. This fiction is uplifting and funny, the banter is clever without ever feeling like they are overdoing it, and the Ineffables react to their feelings in an insecure, fragile, but all too relatable -and fairly realistic- way. It never feels like the writer is pushing it. It became instantly one of my all time favourites.

Human AU. Crowley has recently moved to a new flat and he receives postcards meant for the previous owner.
Ghostrat managed to tell us the building of a lovely bond only through short messages.
I love Crowley's quiet and relatable vulnerability in this story, and I absolutely love Aziraphale’s mask of confidence shining through Crowley's POV.
The gentle jokes, teasing and feelings: all felt very well balanced, but not less emotional because of it. A classic.
Caramel Delight, by AJ_Constantine, rated E, 16k. P .Aug 23.
Lovely neighbours to lovers human AU. Crowley is instantly attracted to the new neighbour and his -oh, lord- forearms (and, I mean, who wouldn't?). But he's determined not to make things awkward, they are just friendly neighbours. That's why Aziraphale keeps knocking on his door for more of that caramel sauce Crowley makes so well. One of the tags in this fiction is: Aziraphale is bad at flirting. I very much beg to differ.
Accidentally In Love, by SpyGlassez. Rated T, 196k. P. Sep 25.
Sweet and delicate human AU. The slowest burn ever! Strangers to friends to lovers, featuring ace Aziraphale and demiromantic Crowley. Aziraphale suffers from long COVID and is rather lonely. Under the advice of his only online friend he puts an ad in a magazine to try and make new friends. This is a lovely story of ordinary life and of love in many of its forms: the falling in love and the romantic pull, but also the quiet, undemanding love of being there for your partner, whether you are officially a couple or not; a story about the strength of friendship and about found and chosen family; a story of self love and self discovery. Great fiction!
Meanwhile, “utter” works for the first (e.g., “you utter floorboard”) but somehow “utterly” doesn’t seem to work as well for the second (“I was utterly floorboarded”).
I've seen so many amazing fan versions of the ending that I absolutely love. But I started drawing this comic, that changes very little from the one we got and decided to finish it!
In my mind everything stays the same, except there is no hell and heaven. So there's no need for angels and demons and their influence on humanity. The angelic and demonic characters can remain immortal just like Aziracrow, If they want to. Or they can choose to become humans and live their new, free live just as they want :)
I just feel like heaven, Hell, and the whole system were what kept Aziracrow from being happy- not the universe and humanity.

This week, it’s Chapter 8, “This Peaceful, Fragile Existence”
Fic summary:
Anthony Crowley and Aziraphale Fell shared a strange and compelling experience in America three years ago that left both of them indelibly marked by the other. They have their own lives in London now. How will their past shape their future?
Chapter Excerpt:
The last few months with Aziraphale have been a glittering, terrifying rollercoaster of emotions for Anthony. When things are good between them, every day is the best day of his life. Aziraphale is almost fanatically devoted to him. Just as important, Anthony has grown as a person in this relationship. He has learned that he can love someone completely, unconditionally, with all of himself, and that his love has power. He has seen Aziraphale’s shoulders lift and fists unclench at a touch or a word from him. He knows that he can take care of Aziraphale for the rest of his life. But Aziraphale won’t let him. When things get too intense, or it seems as though their relationship is taking another leap forward, Aziraphale still runs away.
To be fair, he has been more communicative about his need for space just as he promised. It has almost become routine. A hesitation in the conversation, hands twisting nervously, “Anthony, I think I…” and then he leaves for a couple of days. It hurts every time, throws Anthony off balance. But then Aziraphale comes back and everything is all right for a little while. Anthony is actually able to relax and fully enjoy the magnetic presence of the love of his life. His fragile hopes for the future are quietly renewed. Then, the cycle repeats itself. He feels like a fool for getting his hopes up every time. Blames himself for not being understanding of Aziraphale’s needs.
Aziraphale and Crowley aren’t friends. They’re more than that.
I love stories where one of them suddenly realizes he's in love with the other. Or stories where one of them has always known he was in love but assumes the other could never love him in return.
The stories here scratch that itch for me.
These all happen to be Pre-Season 1 fics, which I find myself turning to more often lately. If you like Book Omens, then these are for you. If you’ve never read Book Omens, you might want to give them a try.

My Take: Crowley stumbles upon the information that humans revere Aziraphale as an obscure queer saint, and decides to do some research. Part of the fun comes from seeing excerpts from the academic articles, books, and websites Crowley finds along the way. Eventually, he watches an art house film that hits a little too close to home, and makes a decision that will change everything, one way or another. One of my favorite Pre-S1 fics.

Author Summary: So it was fine. Even if Crowley couldn’t love him, he clearly liked him well enough, and that was almost the same thing. It no doubt would have continued to be fine, or at least fine-adjacent, were it not for a narrowly averted apocalypse and several bottles of a really quite nice Riesling Aziraphale had found in the back room of his newly restored bookshop.
My Take: Lovely Book Omens versions of A&C in the bookshop getting drunk after the failed Apocolypse. An entire forest of Aziraphale’s pining. A very patient Crowley. Lots of clever writing and witty footnotes. I’ve read it multiple times and I grin all the way through every time.

Summary:
Aziraphale sees a troll at the swimming hole and is instantly smitten. From then on, he's always hoping to catch a glimpse of her. One day he gets closer than he ever imagined he would.
Excerpt:
Cantankerous and wild, that’s what they say about her. Even from a great distance, her sharp hearing picks up their words on the northerly wind.
“The troll has never been one of us. She cares not if we live or die, destroying villages and ruining lives. None can tame her, and many have tried.”
It isn’t true, of course. At least, not anymore. Perhaps in her younger days—when the pain of loneliness was too much to bear—it was different, but she’s calm and reasonable now.
And as for anyone taming her, well, she wishes they would try.
