i'm super weak for anything that gives Rumi a weird relationship with her body and sex and pleasure and this is that in spades.

Could finding a dog in the middle of a storm be the thing to fix everything? Probably not. But she's very cute, and weirdly clever, and they love her.

absolutely wonderful AU with one of the best and most realistic portrayals of a polyamorous relationship i've seen in fic. there's a lot of love for the characters here, both the ones from canon and the original characters used to flesh the world out, and it just oozes out in the writing.

In no particular order, because i think i'd cry if i had to rank:

perks of being a wallflower. i first read this in seventh grade, and i ended up rereading it every year, through my first year of college. the only book ive ever dog-eared; i told myself that it would be okay to mark any page that had something super meaningful to me... and i ended up with almost every page marked 😅

lattes and legends. i was giggling and kicking my feet the entire time i was reading this. read across a couple trains, it sucked me in with its whimsy and intention and descriptions and characters. as someone who loves dnd, and specifically loves playing contradictory characters (i.e., an orc barbarian turned baker), this book felt like it was written for me. also. wlw.

this princess kills monsters. im a sucker for fantasy, i think youll learn, and this book was just... something that i wish i had written. it had me cackling by page two, and it was just a delight the entire time. it was so fun, but had some serious stakes (even if slightly predictable), but i thoroughly enjoyed it. not only that, it really encouraged me to consider retrying my own fantasy novel, but in a more comedic lens.

our wives under the sea. kick started my queer horror reading last year (the luminous dead, the spirit bares its teeth, sister maiden monster, cuckoo, camp damascus), and oh my goooooood. it was amazing. absolutely amazing. the mystery, the descriptions, how immersive it all was... holy smokes. there was also a part that had me absolutely sobbing. really great book.

red rising+. a perfect example of prose goals. plus a phenomenal space opera, driven by unique characters and complex motivations. just, amazing.

i technically have one? but i don't use it. i do have a story graph though, but mostly the same there: i primarily use it to track what i've read. although, last year, i tracked my 52 books in a note on my phone.

Mira is a department head in Saja industries, who’s been working there for a few years now. She actually joined the company pretty early on, only a year after they appeared. It was a gamble, one she had no choice but to take, but it worked wonderfully for her. It makes sense she became a head after only a few years, she’s darn good at her job, and tries not to be biased towards any one employee.

Well, she used to try.

But with Zoey and Rumi, it’s hard to keep that up.

Zoey’s a fairly new hire. She’s been here for a few months and every interaction with her teaches Mira that everything good can, in fact, be shoved into a tiny body. Mira first met Zoey in a classic meet cute, in which Zoey accidentally ran into her and dropped her papers and Mira has been in love with the loser ever since. Zoey even brings her coffee daily.

Rumi’s been here a bit longer, and she works directly under Mira. Mira didn’t really get to know her until recently though, when she found Rumi in her office looking for her. Ever since, Rumi always got so flustered talking to her, and always seemed to look for ways to spend time with Mira.

They both were so cute, trying their best to always be around her. And given how easily they both flustered, Mira figured they were hiding something from her.

And she thinks she knows what it is.

Hopefully, Zoey and Rumi have caught on to the fact that she reciprocates.

it's been 6 years since j.k rowling started doubling down on her transphobia. (if we mark her mask off moment as her 2020 posting)

people have had six years to come to terms with it and find alternatives, there have been multiple video essays podcasts and written journalism about all of this, there are so many lists of alternatives including contemporary to the series and current fiction. even as early as 2022 people were renaming real world social groups/sport formed around their hp fandom to distance themselves from her work.

i wasn't even particularly negative, i said "stop spending money here" that's neither critical to the source material nor the fans. and not spending money isn't even an active action it's passive inaction, very easy to do.

also as someone who grew up with the book phenomenon and the films, you cannot reproduce the phenomenon that it used to be. you can find other things that give you joy but that was a very specific pop cultural time and event. the new show not only funds the cultural relevance of and bigoted political actions of rowling, it's also just inherently flawed in conception as a work of nostalgia that will always fall short in both quality, phenomena, and fandom culture.

I'm not coddling adults or teens who are tempted to engage with hp because i respect that they have the capacity to change their minds and expand their own tastes. it's not my responsibility to spoon-feed people alternatives.

I'm saying stop giving her money

i'm saying stop giving the franchise cultural currency via streaming attention

i'm saying the real people who are being made unsafe due to the transphobia and racism of j.k rowling are and always will be more important than nostalgia and fandom

I sound harsh because i was being blunt, if that comes off as negativity that puts some people off then that's okay.

there are much more hand holding options out there, (i myself watched a few video essays years ago deconstructing the bigotry of the novels and the messy relationship between fandom on identity and fiction versus personal ethics. because i needed discussions to process my own personal emotional response to letting the franchise go)

but with my own post I would hope that at least some people go "actually yeah this isn't worth my time and money" about the new show.

because it's okay to feel some negative emotions if it reminds you not to do something you actually feel is wrong.

ultimately @thewickedbohemian it's okay that you don't like my two sentence post as an approach to addressing the entire harry potter fandom. I would encourage you to visit/revisit any works that make you feel the same kind of magic that people are looking for and compile a list yourself to share, it's a good exercise and does help give people a place to start. it's not something i did with this post, it can be something you do with your own post, feel free to tag me in it and i'll reblog.

The age of eligibility for an ABLE account, allowing USAmerican disabled people to save up money without losing their government assistance for having “too much,” is going to go up to cover disabilities diagnosed by age 46 (currently it’s age 26), meaning a much larger number of people will be able to access them. In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

“So... We got the exploding diarrhea. Here's my advice for anyone who doesn't have it yet:

It's going to take a minute for the government to pin down where this is coming from, and then issue a recall, because the FDA has been gutted. But, I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt : this is coming from Taylor Farms produce, and you will see them recalled.

You'll want to avoid all Taylor Farms produce in the grocery store. They supply McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, about any fast food place you can think of.

Raspberries, watermelons, cilantro, and the veggies you're hearing about are not causing this many people to get sick. It's the shredded lettuce, specifically, that's the problem. But, you'll want to stay away from every type of produce this company puts out, because one strand of shredded lettuce is all it takes to contaminate bushels.

Taylor Farms is the source. Taco Bell proactively pulled their produce from their restaurants. You're going to see other fast food places doing this, and probably will see that before the government names a source. The FDA knows this, but they can't come out and tell us all until there's proof, which takes resources and research, which takes manpower, but the FDA has been cut by about 20-30%

During the Biden term, onions at McDonald's had ecoli. We knew this because DNA testing was done quickly and they were able to narrow it down to one place that caused the outbreak. And, it was traced back to Taylor Farms. This isn't going to be solved as quickly though.

When you get this, make a virtual appointment to your PCP - a "same day sick" appointment. Tell them someone in your family just tested for this and was positive and was prescribed Bactrim. If you go in person, they're probably going to make you poop in a cup and wait until results come back to prescribe.

You'll know when you get this. Trust me on all of this.

You'll want to stay hydrated because this parasite damages the lining of the small intestine. Your small intestine, in turn, secretes more water into the gut, and less nutrients and liquid are able to remain in the body. So no matter how much you shit, you're going to want to drink. A day of this leads to dehydration if you don't increase your fluid intake, and a few days will land you in the hospital.

If you have headaches, weakness, muscle cramps, dizziness, or an increase heart rate - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Go to the ER for fluids if you can't drink enough.

Matricomp deemed their relationship incompatible. They decided to steal a ship and a birth matrix and set out into the stars. Mi‑yeong believed the universe was too beautiful to spend a life in one place. Celine believed in Mi‑yeong. That was enough to leave.

Rumi was born far from Krypton. The birth matrix had been slightly damaged during her mothers’ escape and exposed to cosmic radiation. This caused her left eye to develop weaker powers than the right (it sees worse, its heat vision doesn’t reach the same temperatures and causes pain and fatigue more quickly), her hair took on a purple tint, and some of her tissues became denser. She also accumulates solar energy faster and in greater amounts, but long, intense periods without sunlight can quickly lead to exhaustion and weakness.

For five years they wandered through star systems, living like nomads of the universe. Mi‑yeong was at her most creative then; Celine at her most stressed—she lost count of how many times they had to flee or fight because Mi‑yeong became too enamored with something she absolutely shouldn’t have. Fortunately, Rumi’s presence added a bit of sense to her life.

Rumi grew up in space, learning from both her mothers. From Mi‑yeong she learned art, music, and wonder; from Celine discipline, survival, and combat.

Red dwarfs make up the majority of stars (70-80% of all stars), so during their travels they rarely had the chance to be exposed to radiation from other types of stars. The Sun was the first yellow star they had ever seen.

Mi‑yeong always followed beauty, so when she heard rumors of the Sun’s beauty, she decided they should go there. That’s where they encountered slave hunters. Celine managed to destroy all the attackers, but Mi‑yeong was gravely wounded while protecting Rumi. Celine pushed the ship to its limits, but she couldn’t make it in time. She buried her beloved on Jeju Island, in the most beautiful place she could find. At the burial site she placed a great stone, burned Mi‑yeong’s name into it, and together with Rumi sang her favorite songs.
