I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.

I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.

This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.

Okay okay so I gotta be careful with what I say, since some of the party follows me, Goose is my beloved Pokemon DND Character! They’re a criminal with a heart of gold. Former Team Skull member turned contract thief, Goose has come to Unova with their Pokemon Maverick the Rattata for a fresh start, but things never go to plan, do they?

In coming to Unova they’ve gotten themselves into a rather tangled web, befriending a PI who’s been hired to investigate their last heist and a gaggle of young adults all set on saving the region. Can they untangle themselves from this? Can they atone for their past crimes? Will they break cycles that created them? Well those are all questions hopefully to be answered in the campaign so only time will tell.

A lot of Goose’s story is about identity, the one you choose for yourself and the one thrust upon you violently by society. They were consistently villainised growing up, often for things outside their control such as their class status, their disabilities, their queerness, which meant they were othered socially from their community. Goose’s response? Well if you’re going to view me as a monster, as beneath you, as lesser than or worthless, then I will show you a real monster. They chose a life of crime because it was the identity thrust on them as an impoverished child, and it’s a comfortable one to stay in. It almost feels righteous. Almost.

They’ve internalised the isms thrown at them throughout life, and are now lashing them out and in doing so, enforcing them on themselves and on those around them. It’s not healthy and a part of them is aware of this, but it’s something they’re unwilling of letting go just yet.

Goose will consistently believe and tell others that they’re not a good person (and believe me, their views on what a good person is are incredibly warped) yet underneath this prickly exterior is a person who naturally tends to helping others, who is kind and whose gut instincts will always be one of comfort. When given the choice, they will help even at great personal cost.

As such they’re at a significant crossroads, do they follow the path they always have? Or take a chance on their new friends and try to change?

Anyway that’s a little bit about Who Goose is, here’s a little bit about Themes, Motifs and Symbolism:

- A bit about colour. Red is Goose's “Hero” Colour, acting as a sort of visual Leitmotif that follows Goose through their story, as such it is seen in all of Goose's past designs. Red is classically associated with villainy and the dark colours accent this red to reflect the dark path they’re on with their continued life of crime, however Red is also associated with love and passion, things Goose is in abundance. This contrasts with their belief that they're a bad person. The rest of their colour pallet and look is rather monotone black, a specific reflection of their black and white world view.

- Fashion as armour. Goose’s main outfit is a rather outdated compared to the rest of the party and this is not unintentional! They hold some rather outdated ideas about themselves and refuse vulnerability. As such, they wear heavy layers of clothing, even in the sweltering unovian summer, mirroring the oppressive secrecy they hold of their life of crime. The most important story beats so far in the campaign have had Goose being stripped both literally and metaphorically, either voluntarily or not. An example of such a moment was them removing their coat in a moment of openness with one of the other players and resting the coat over her shoulders. Another was with them buttoning their coat up when they started shutting down a vulnerable conversation. Last session, their coat was stolen from them, placing them in a moment of extreme vulnerability. Seeing them without their coat, or even worse, without their waistcoat is a rarity and it only happens in moments of extreme vulnerability.

- Animals associated with Goose: Rats, Large Black Dogs, Jackals, Black Pigeons and Snakes. These are all animals maligned by society, seen as pests or as "evil" despite this not being the case. This reflects into Goose's own internal struggle with identity especially outside their life of crime. These real animals are then reflected in the Pokemon Goose Catches and owns. Rattata has actually become a favourite Pokemon of mine since exploring the symbolism here with Maverick, Goose’s own Rattata.

- Natural Elements associated with Goose: Large Tropical Storms, Thunder, Volcanic eruptions. These are all natural disasters that mirror Goose's anger, they're loud, they're unpredictable and volatile.  

- Mythological figures associated with Goose: Hermes, Eurydice, and Medea. It is all about the tragedy and betrayal. Don’t worry about it! :)

- Art movements associated with Goose: Detective Noir Films, Neo-Noir Mafia Films, Art Deco architecture, J.C Leyendecker's portraiture, Punk rock, Anarchism, Chess, Indie folk rock and Queer art. 

- Time, Atonement and Redemption are large narrative themes in Goose's Story; Can you escape your past? Can you ever heal the hurt you caused? Can you change? Can the world?

A little more info dump in response: On Party and messiness: Yes oh it is absolutely so messy, but it gets messier. Frankie (the PI) is an old childhood friend of Goose's that they had a horrendous falling out with when they were young and dumb at age sixteen and hadn't seen each other since. Goose's memory of that incident was Frankie reacting poorly to them coming out and confessing their feelings to him and asking him to join team skull with them. Important to note that it's Goose's memory of the incident, Frankie's strong negative reaction was never about their queer identity or their feelings, but the joining team skull part as his abusive father was a cop and the idea of being any way connected to the street gang terrified Frankie. Teenagers are never good at handling rejection, whether they're on the giving or receiving end. Now, it's well near two decades since that incident, both have since transitioned gender wise, neither recognises the other to begin with and they have fallen into an easy chemistry that bothers Goose to no end. It is infuriating that this man, a stranger essentially, seems to know them better than most of their closest associates. The two work so well together, falling into an comfortable rhythm, complimenting each others battling styles too. Goose's reaction to this is to push Frankie away (Local touch starved Non-binary goading their new found rival into punching them for completely normal reasons) as Frankie is a safety concern for them, and potentially worse, a liability.

They have recently figured out who Frankie used to be (They have not clued Franklin in on this at all) and it is very much a "Oh of course it's You." Whether this is fate or bad luck, isn't something Goose is really willing to contend with (and personally to me, I don’t really care to say whether it’s just happenstance or kismet), However, Frankie has already rejected them as a teen, surely now they're adults in a different context once Frankie finds out who They used to be, then he’ll absolutely reject them again, right? So there’s really no stakes in that relationship cause it’s already doomed from Goose’s perspective.

This obviously leads to a lot of friction and flirting and goading in that particular relationship. The perceived lack of stakes makes it easier to engage with Frankie, after all, he’s going to leave anyway. He’s going to hate Goose anyway. Why not have fun with it whilst it lasts? (Is this also thinly veiled self harming behaviour? Ehhhhh probably)

The other notable Party member Goose has a significant relationship with is Emilia, a rich kid on the run. They see a part of their younger self in Emilia’s anger at the world. They have a strong desire to protect her, and to also make sure that she doesn’t fall down the same path they’ve taken. It’s not worth it.

On Prescribed Identity vs Chosen, Morality and Atonement: YOU GET IT YOU GET IT YESSS YESSS!!! I love your tags on when is the tipping point of harm becoming evil and does a person’s general good nature outweigh the harm they actually do. It’s such important questions to ask and it is really fun to explore in a character like Goose.

Like really go dig that hole!! The friends you use as collateral will make it worth it. (there’s nothing in that hole worth dying over.)

I really do love them for this exploration of morality and who gets to decide if you’re a good or bad person? What even is a good person? When does defining this become self serving?

I could back and forth on the philosophy of this for ages.

On the Sensual nature of Red:

Yes I’m so glad you picked that up! Not weird at all since it’s kind of been an unspoken part of their design. Yes there absolutely is an intimacy to those colours, it is the whole reason they have red under lights in their hair and a red lining to their coat, visually it draws you in and adds that intimacy in seeing those parts of Goose, even more so when they’re stripped of that heavy black coat and you get to to see their red shirt underneath. It very much is crushed velvet and blood and tenderness and violence.

Goose’s relationship to Sex, Sensuality and Sexuality isn’t something I really get to cover in the campaign but it absolutely is there in the background to me. And Goose naturally has a very complicated relationship with all three of concepts.

I’m very glad the sultry part of Goose gets picked up on, it’s something they have a complicated relationship with.

On biting and mauling and ripping and tearing up the institutions that be:

Yes yes!! Again you get it, it’s very cathartic and it’s a very fun urge to explore. Goose has every right to be as pissy about the ableism they experience and it’s so self serving for me cause they get the self confidence to 1) fight for themselves and 2) hit people with their cane.

It’s a lil treat just for me.

But it serves great narrative beats too by giving Goose a perspective on the world the other characters don’t have. If the world is made in such a way that it’s designed to deliberately exclude you and your peers, how can you fight back?

Okay so first of all I really do love everything you've written, thank you so much again for getting into more detail here!! Truthfully the curiosity is slightly self-serving, a lot of the themes around moral complexity and prescribed vs. chosen identity are extremely relevant to my own trainer OC Silvana. I'm playing her in a Poke5e campaign so she's on my mind a fair bit, which is part of why Goose is so fascinating to me. Like oh? Another character who hits on a lot of the same themes I've been chewing on for months? Better ask for details!!

Anyway you really did mean it when you said things get messier for Goose. When you said they were hanging around the PI investigating them I didn't think this would also be an EX-BEST FRIEND, let alone the ex-best friend who doesn't even KNOW they're the ex-best friend. I could really only see this getting messier if there was some "I know you know but do you know that I know??" business (which to me feels like the logical next step, but that's just me).

Goose really is our maladaptive coping legend though. Like the shift from "oh that's so wild I get on so well with this stranger. I wonder how many times I can get him to punch me" to "wait he's my old best friend? The one who abandoned me because I told him I loved him (and wanted to join a street gang together)? It's only a matter of time before he learns who I am, clearly the healthiest thing to do is double down on this punching business" is golden to me. Like yesss!!! GET IT!!!!!!!

I truly can't help but cheer when I see that kind of thing, it's absolutely horrible to witness in real life but I live for it in fiction. And it's such a fun contrast with how you described Goose's relationship with Emilia too! Like I'm sure there's more context here that I'm missing but it's so interesting to pick apart. Like oh so you're actually extremely capable of acting appropriately and well-adjusted at times? You truly want good things for the people around you and this behaviour only surfaces in such a destructive way around one particular person? Fascinating

It's the social nuance that makes the messiness more appreciable in a character. Like they ARE capable of following typical social patterns and relating to others in healthy ways. They're just not doing it!

With morality and identity I really could talk all day about this and it seems like you could too, it is SO fun to pick apart!! I especially loved your comment about the friends used as collateral to dig the hole deeper, it's something that keeps coming up with Silvana and I am so starved for anything to do with it. Like can something still be worthwhile if it makes your friends hate you? If it makes your pokemon hate you?

I am truly and endlessly obsessed with this topic in all forms but ESPECIALLY as it relates to pokemon. Like to be clear I'm not advocating for edgy dogfight poke-gore or anything (frankly this is uninteresting to me) but what if your dog knew you were kind of a bad person and could judge you for it??

Moving on to everything with colour, I am SO GLAD I was reading that right! That sultriness shines right through Goose's visual design (and I'm ace, so there's probably even more of it that I just wasn't picking up on) and it really is evocative of everything you said. Like this is someone with intimacy and intensity in equal measure and I love it. The way you described the red under the black as an invitation to look deeper at them was really interesting, I don't have the right words for it right now but it really speaks to how their clothing is an indication of their vulnerability.

This is where my tags got cut off so I'm doing my best to remember the points I liked most! It's fair that Goose's relationship with sex, sensuality, and sexuality aren't really highlighted in your campaign but it's also SO hard not to read between the lines with everything else that's been stated

Like disability already makes having a relationship to The Body (not even a good relationship, just a relationship) take so much more energy and effort than it would for an abled person, and to me a relationship with The Body is something of a prerequisite for a healthy-ish relationship with sex or sensuality (not trying to dismiss the notion of healthy relationships with sex/sexuality/sensuality without a relationship to The Body, I'm drawing from my own experience and if it doesn't land that's okay!)

So by that framework we already have someone who's off to a rougher start than most re: straightforward relationships with sex and sensuality. Then we add on top of it the trauma inherent to the actual experiences of being subject to ableism AND experiencing poverty as a child AND being subject to classism all the while AND being queer in a queerphobic society AND to top it all off literally all of the emotional fuckery that's implied in both joining a street gang in their formative years then leaving it as an adult

Like wow Goose really didn't stand a chance :)

Okay so truthfully I didn't have a lot to say with disability other than that the mental image of Goose beating someone to the ground with their cane comes extremely naturally to me. Like yeah they would do that. They just would! And sure they COULD get down with them and start punching but the cane works so much better for that. Extends the reach. Means they don't have to dirty their pants.

We all wish we could let our inner Goose wild (except we don't because this is textbook "behaviour that gets you banned from the grocery store")

Having Poke5e characters with deep moral complexities who don’t know they’re in the Pokemon universe

Anyway responses:

Oh yeah, Goose loves a Maladaptive Coping Mechanism! If I had a nickel for every one they had, I’d have probably have enough nickel’s to afford them the intake fee for a therapy session. They wouldn’t go, but I’d still book it for them yknow?

You’re right on reading that, Goose is able to have mostly normal relationships with the rest of the party. The rest of the party is where we get to see who Goose is outside of their identity as a criminal. And who is that Goose? Well, they’re a kind older mentor figure. They enjoy cooking with Cori (our parties chef) and apologises always with a meal in hand. They warmly give advice to Emilia, helping her learn street smarts. They enjoy quiet moments with Yucca (our parties shyest nerd). They reach out again and again and again.

It’s also important to note, Goose is not aware or is unable to acknowledge this identity that they have with the rest of the party. It’s too incongruent with the identity that they’ve been prescribed and fully believe to be their truest self. It’s not a safe identity for them. It’s never been safe to be this soft. And that still painfully colours all of their interactions, leading to friction amongst their new friends but it happens to be most coloured in their interactions with Frankie.

Cause here’s the thing. It’s not a one sided rivalry. Frankie has said his fair share of heated words back at Goose. Has called them a crip, has talked over them about their own roots and assumed their criminality based not on evidence but simply on how they look. (And who cares if those assumptions are right, they still hurt) (Neither is justified in hurting the other, but they have used these as justification for hurting him. They avoid the feelings they actually have for Frankie)

This will eventually blow up in both of their faces, especially since Goose has apologised with food to Frankie after a particularly nasty fight and Frankie is putting in the work to challenge those preconceptions about Goose. Especially once Frankie is clued in on the whole Ex-Besties situation and also because Frankie recently got a hold of Goose’s Wanted poster, and yet also told Goose “I don’t think you’re bad people Goose, I think you’re good”

Which! Didn’t not cause an internal meltdown for Goose, Why do you ask? (Sarcasm, it totally has, and was not helped by immediately following that with a nightmare dream sequence where Goose finds a bleeding out Frankie and their hands are already sticky and red before they reach him (cause my DM loves me dearly) which really adds to the list of things Goose isn’t going to unpack right now.)

The nuances really do make them such a fun character, and it’s fun to explore that exaggerated level of messiness, and still be a character deserving of understanding and care.

I would absolutely love to talk more about the moral quandaries and using your friends and how Silvana deals with them, though I do have to be careful on what I say publicly about it when it comes to Goose because plot points I’ve worked on for MONTHS aren’t getting spoiled cause I got careless on tumblr. (I’ve written over 3k of in universe court documents that will never see the light of day in game solely to have flavour text for my DM to choose to use and that wanted poster was best kept secret for months)

Yeah you’re absolutely right on with “What if your dog knew you were a bad person and could judge you for it?”

To me, it’s the genre dissonance. Ones character does not know the genre of story they’re in and it really works well in this campaign setting to create a rather jarring character and table experience. In Goose head, they’re in a Neo-noir mafia movie that just happens to also feature their beloved pet Rattata. To some of the other party members, it’s a silly Rom and Buddy Comedy where it really ain’t that serious. And then the campaign actual genre of Action Adventure typical of Pokemon. It elevates the personal stakes, and allows a little bit of exploration into what the Pokemon universe as a whole implies but never outright states.

For a Goose specific example, the poverty and street crime that is implied to be prevalent in Alola, enough so that certain islands and areas are abandoned/taken over by team skull which also targets the youth who want change in their world plus the separation of more wealthy cities from these towns. (mirroring some real world politics around Class status, Native Land Rights especially in regards to tourism and youth crime rates) These implied topics are the foundations of which Goose’s childhood is built and the trauma that goes alongside that.

On If your dog could Judge you: I raise you “You trained your dog to commit Tax fraud?!” Maverick knows and finds working with Goose on heists to be perfect enrichment. He is after all an Alolan Rattata, and they’re known to be good thieves with good noses and teeth made for getting into places they shouldn’t. I don’t think I have any Pokemon judging Goose for their crimes, but I absolutely should, thank you for this idea!

YES!!! You picked up everything I was implying with the sex and sensuality bit. It genuinely is so hard to have a relationship with The Body in a body that actively works against you and causes you harm and then have a healthy relationship with said body and how others perceive it. Layering that with the feminine traits in Goose and the misogyny that gets, their queerness especially relating to their trans identity, their class status, the child and teenhood trauma, the ableism and the medicalisation of said body, they’re just not set up to have a healthy relationship with those topics. There is absolutely an off screen maladaptive coping mechanism in here, much like their semi off screen smoking habit.

I’d say it’s complimentary to their internal vs prescribed identity themes, there’s the identity thrust upon you and sometimes enforced violently here, the one you perform to stay safe and there one you have internally.

There’s a reason the cane is designed in a way that is reminiscent of shillelagh and has a brass end. It is made with a hardwood over the more common aluminium canes. It actually was a gift from their cousin when they turned twenty. Like for many disabled people, their mobility aid is an extension of themselves and as such the whole design reflects them. It’s dangerous and yet also helpful much like Goose. It’s old fashioned yet timeless. It’s very much designed to hit people as much as it’s designed to help them.
