This brought tears to my conservationist heart today.
The continued existence of these species is the legacy of so many people whose names we will never know--some of who never lived to see the impacts of their work.
When you count up the flaws of our species, you have to count the good things too--out of the many species throughout Earth's history that have caused the demise or endangerment of other species, we are the only one that tries to fix it out of our fascination and love for other life forms.
(Big thank you to the anonymous asker who sent this in!)
Earth Day reblog of this thing that made me cry.
And I'll add some other recent good conservation news.
ā¢Green sea turtles are no longer endangered
ā¢Giant pandas are no longer endangered
ā¢Panamanian golden frogs were returned to the wild for the first time since they were wiped out by chytrid 17 years ago
ā¢The Eastern humpback whale population has exceeded pre-whaling numbers and many other whale species are showing strong signs of recovery
ā¢Salmon and bison have been returned to their former habitat in multiple parts of the US through dam removal, habitat restoration, and reintroduction
ā¢The Western monarch migration was up 60% compared to last year
ā¢Galapagos tortoises were reintroduced to Floreana for the first time in 180 years
ā¢Attenborough's long beaked echidna was rediscovered after being though extinct for decades
ā¢Five "lost" island bird species were documented by citizen scientist birders in 2025

Youāve heard of the Roaring 20s........
now get ready for the Screaming 20s - coming to a decade near you in 2020
is it too early or can we start screaming now
in retrospect perhaps we should have started sooner
this post is the equivalent of a newspaper from the day of the outbreak being blown past by the wind after you wake up in a post apocalyptic world
My one friend really likes "yo mama" jokes, but she feels bad for saying them to me because my mama's dead, and lately she's been circumventing this by adding "in heaven" to them, a concept I was introduced to with zero warning via a text that said, "Yo mama's so stupid she's in heaven pre-heating the microwave."

Itās so normalized, they teach it to us from birth. Some people live their entire lives never seeing an issue with the images above.

:))))))
Itās actually a pretty good highlight of how generally people donāt notice theyāre being racist, since the diversity in the various characters depicted leads me to believe they thought they were including everyone.

"I have a problem with my trans son. Not because he's trans, but because he inhaled all our food like fucking Kirby."
I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".
I work at a nonprofit, and it is absolutely wild explaining to folks that being part of a program that reduces their energy bill actually helps us get funding to help even more people get energy bill savings.
You arenāt taking resources from anyone by using programs you qualify for. You are making a case for those programs being important enough to continue to exist and (in many cases) grow.
We live in a world so controlled by the idea of resource scarcity that we reason "If I get help, that must be taking help away from someone else!"
Eternally grateful to the DHS worker who patiently explained this to me when I was applying for food stamps as a broke college student. I was so convinced I wasnāt struggling enough to deserve the help, but they said āthe resources are here to be used, use them.ā $200 a month made a world of difference in the early days of my freelance career, and Iāve never forgotten that.
yesterday I had the thought "visual novel for normal people" (?) and halfway through making this image (which I thought would be really funny) I realized it was completely meaningless
āThere arenāt enough hours in a day.ā There are actually. The problem is that we think 40 hour work weeks are an unavoidable fact of life.
The problem is that everyone has to work 8 hours, pretty much no exceptions, and with getting ready time + (unpaid) lunch + commute, ā8 hoursā is actually anywhere between 9 and 12, every single day, with more work to do when you get home because our society and culture was built around having one member of the household home full time and nothing has changed now that almost everyone works.
No wonder Americans are reliant on DoorDash and fast food, thereās no time or energy to cook. No one wonder mental and physical health are in shambles, many just spent all day sitting in fluorescent lights with little to no stimulation. āJust wake up earlierā āJust meal prepā⦠these are ok short-term, individual solutions, but the broader, systemic issue is obvious. We arenāt built for this. Thereās no work-life balance. Genuinely, I think if our culture could normalize a shorter work week, many individualsā biggest problems would simply evaporate.

After I came out as an adult to my childhood best friend, he went back to his family and told them and then when we next spoke he said, āweāve decided this is a good move for you.ā

next time you encounter something confusing, try using your fan fiction reading device to access websites like "wikipedia" or "miriam webster" to break down those pesky difficult topics. its sorta like a "enemies to lovers" situation, where the scary new knowledge can become your friend - and then you won't look so unflattering when you comment
