[voice of a person who just got like seven paragraphs into typing up a different version of this post before succumbing to the futility of that] i actually don't think it's ableism that fromsoft games don't have a difficulty slider. i actually think it's largely fine and reasonable that many action combat games may not be accessible to people who significantly struggle with visual processing, reaction time, and precise inputting in the same way I think it's largely fine and reasonable that many puzzle or mystery games may not be accessible to people who significantly struggle with wordplay, abstract thinking, or parsing and remembering text.
sometimes a piece of art may be outside of your capacity to experience for whatever reason, and its fine to be sad about that (im certainly sad about a lot of the games i can not ever play) but it doesn't necessarily mean you have been categorically wronged by its creators.
I think it's also important to add that it's ok to play games in ways not originally intended by the creators. There is no incorrect way to play a singleplayer game, just as there's no incorrect way to experience other forms of art. It isn't incorrect to watch a movie without sound, if that's what you want to do. It isn't incorrect to read every other chapter of a book, if that's what you want to do. And likewise, it isn't incorrect to mod games to be less difficult, if that's what you want to do. Artwork is created with an intended experience in mind, but as consumers of artwork, we will inevitably have different experiences with it anyways. That's ok.
There is no obligation for a developer of a game to change an artistic decision about their game to make it more accessible, and there is no obligation for a player of a game to experience the game as close to the intended experience as possible.
i completely agree and im gonna use this as an excuse to yank a couple of relevant things i said in the replies and tack them on here.
i think it's completely unobjectionable to say "i'd prefer to do what i like with this and experience it on my own terms instead of the developer's" and do whatever you feel inclined to on your end to bring that about. IMO modding always will be the be-and-end-all of accessibility too, so i'm extremely broadly in favor of it. i bring up the idea of a developer's vision not to imply that's the de facto most correct or artistically worthwhile version of a game but as a point of reference for understanding where the priorities were in its development. tl;dr of my stance is pretty much. a developer is within their rights to create whatever kind of game they want. the player base is within their rights to react to and engage with that game in whatever way they want. what the developer is not entitled to do is forbid or prevent players reacting to or engaging with their game in unintended ways. what the players are not entitled to do is demand that developers preemptively spend development resources on offering them the tools to do this.
Update, there is now an official (non-racist) translation of the manga by Viz Media! Iâd encourage you all to buy it and give it a read! It features multiple stories of different mixed japanese characters and some non-japanese characters.
When being mixed-race makes you an outsider, feeling rooted can seem impossible.
The five activists who vandalised a branch of Barclays bank say they are 'extremely relieved'.
Five Palestine Action activists in the United Kingdom will not be sentenced under terrorism laws, a judge has ruled. Brendon OâHagan, 28, Amanda Kelly, 31, Hmeera Atiqnisar, 31, Mohammed Malik, 28, and Alma Yaniv, 70, were convicted in June of causing damage worth 212,000 pounds ($290,000) to a branch of Barclays bank in the town of Burnley in Lancashire in August 2024. The activists were protesting against the bankâs shareholdings in the Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems. On Friday at Preston Crown Court, as Judge Robert Altham announced his ruling, scores of their supporters gathered outside erupted into cheers and pro-Palestine chants. Malikâs mother, Dove Malik, told Al Jazeera, âItâs a victory for us, itâs a victory for Palestine, itâs a victory for protesting ⊠We are on the right side of history.â In a joint statement, the activists said they were âextremely relieved that the court has seen sense and decided not to sentence us as terroristsâ. âThis should never have been an option,â they said. âWe were on trial for charges of criminal damage, for damaging some windows and spraying red paint on a Barclays branch. At no point during the trial were we, or the jury, informed that, if convicted, we could face being sentenced as terrorists.â The five are due to be sentenced on September 4. At the time of their verdicts, Palestine Action had not been proscribed as a terrorist group. Neither the defendants nor the jury were aware that terrorism charges might be involved.

I got my magnetic Jax and Ribbit keychain and how ironic is it that the magnets inside were put in wrong and they push each other away instead of sticking together ? :')
Oh they are supposed to be like that, oh thats so funny đđđ
the "isn't she lovely" montage literally doesn't make sense for any explanation other than the fact that jax is a closeted trans woman
Isn't she lovely? Isn't she wonderful? Isn't she precious? Less than one minute old I never thought through love, we'd be Making one as lovely as she But isn't she lovely? Made from love
and the fact that it plays at the end of her life, when she passes the point of no return
when, in her final moments, she allows herself to be accepted and forgiven after years of pushing people away and self-isolating
when she allows her vulnerability and femininity to be seen not as a point of weakness, but a gift that makes her understood and loveable
although it's devastating, there is tragic beauty in that hug with pomni, where jax lets a small part of herself -- the inner little girl who never got to exist -- be born and realized. through an act of love.
no, it's not a perfect full circle moment, but it's a huge step for her

The American worship of The Dog as a sort of animal god, complete with a taboo against depictions of violence, even fictional, against them, is one of the most harrowing things about this nationâs culture.

if you think that a character being non-binary automatically means that their gender is up for interpretation instead of them just being non-binary then congratulations ! you're an exorsexist.
Iâm losing my mind watching this John Oliver episode about fetal personhood. Mainly bc the hypocrisy is so glaring to me after writing and studying about childrenâs rights.
For a fetus, conservatives think that the ârightsâ of the fetus must override the health and safety, and even life of the pregnant person. But the second that baby comes out, suddenly itâs all parental rights all the time, even if it hurts the child (or kills the child!!) Itâs so disgusting and terrifying and it makes me so angry.
These fucking pieces of shit think that you should go to jail for having a miscarriage and should be forced to have a c section by court order âfor the good of the fetusâ. But at the same time, they also think the parentâs right to abuse their kid and keep them from accessing medical care or education should be protected.
A contradiction easily resolved if you think of it as men's rights:
Men's rights to force their wives/girlfriends to have a baby.
Men's rights to "parent" that child with spanking and yelling.
Men's rights to ensure their daughter remains fuckable and their son remains "a real man".
It only appears contradictory because Republicans market heavily at female voters and clothe their fascism in pretty words. It's never "parents' rights". It'll always be "father's rights".
Thatâs sort of true, but I think that this thinking comes a little too close to absolving the role some mothers play in upholding patriarchal values and/or promoting their supposed âparental rightsâ. Groups like moms for liberty or the many many women involved in and leading the homeschooling movement, also anti-vax movements.
Patriarchy places childbearing firmly in the hands of moms, and since it is practically the only place that conservative women can have true power and agency (so long as they donât challenge the patriarchy and/or white supremacy in a meaningful way), a lot of women do zealously fight for the right to abuse their children, prevent them from getting education or healthcare, all in the name of parental rights.
"what would you do if AI went away tomorrow????"
idk, rejoice that we might get the good autocorrect back again?

I'm going to sound like a total killjoy lmao. Dgmw the "net zero information post" meme was funny the first handful of times I saw it, but nowadays seeing someone pull out that phrase on a post just leaves me thinking like. Well, it doesn't *have* to be a net zero information post.
You can actually learn a lot from it if you're willing to interrogate things such as "why did I completely believe this until I saw someone directly on the thread debunk it?" and perhaps "are there any particular preconceptions the original claim is playing into to Confirmation Bias its way into being believed with no evidence?" and "How susceptible am I to believe something because it confirms biases I hold or it makes for a satisfying narrative?". And then trying to apply the things you learned from that exercise the next time you catch yourself believing a similar claim without looking into it.
