Nebraska hasn't passed a single bill this year because one lawmaker keeps filibustering in protest of an anti-trans bill: 'I will burn this session to the ground'

Damn. I thought she was just gonna up and make a fuss and her swearing to protect trans kids was a bunch of empty words (again).

But no. She's one-woman filibustering the entire Nebraska legislature into a complete standstill until they agree to protect the rights of trans kids.

She was 100% serious when she said she'd make it as painful for everyone as it is for trans kids. Gahddamn.

This is why small elections matter. She's not a country wide senator or president or shit. She's just a local official representing District 6 in Nebraska.

This is why the "smaller" elections between the presidential elections matter.

but the thing is also that states rights can be countered by federal protection and if a state law compromises freedom of speech and freedom of religion, at the same time, that state law can get struck down as unconstitutional.

because laws that directly targeted other races had already been struck down as discriminatory, so the ones that were left specifically in their wording policed white behavior, with the logic that since this was theoretically pro-white it couldn't be discriminatory.

this logic was thrown out, and the illegitimacy of any and all anti-race-mixing laws finally became the federal standard.

there is absolutely no reason to let the bad guys dictate what their law means, because that's not how written law works! it works on wording and (in the US system) precedent.

when you're looking at a shitty law designed to be so broad it allows rampant discrimination at the discretion of law enforcement in order to target a specific demographic without naming the target outright because they aren't allowed to do that, listing all the other ways it logically applies and clearly wasn't intended is essential, because it's part of the process of demonstrating that it's a shit law that shouldn't have been passed.

Closet-reactionary liberal college student I met last year: Of course I love and respect the queer and trans community! However, one can argue that the early gay community's... casual attitude toward sex was a disastrous political and social mist--

If you start ballet at 16, you are too old to ever expect to be able to do it seriously. If you start at 12 you’re too old. If you want to do ballet as a serious thing, as a career, you need to start at like eight years old or even younger, because your bones and joints need to be trained while they’re still flexible in order for you to be able to perform many of the required motions and stances of ballet. In particular, you need to be able to perform turnout of the hips, but all of your joints in your legs and feet will be affected, and this irreversibly changes your body.

And yet! Nobody talks about this as a negative thing! Little girls say they want to be ballet dancers, and if their parents have enough money, that’s what they get to be! Does it cause problems in later life? Yeah, sometimes! Often, even! But nobody talks about that because it’s a thing for cis people to do and so naturally it’s all fine!

begging queer kids to read up on princess diana’s involvement with the community. yes, she was a rich, pretty monarch. yes, she died young.

but the reason why queer people love her is because she used her privilege during the aids crisis to advocate for sick queer men, when very few others would - much less someone of her status.

diana spent years advocating for the health and care of queer people with hiv/aids. in 1987, at the height of the epidemic, she opened the first specialist clinic dedicated to treating aids patients (the first clinic of it’s kind in the uk).

she also fought public hysteria by hugging and shaking bare hands with aids patients, at a time when aids was thought to be spread by skin to skin contact. not only that, she visited patients in the clinic regularly and even comforted them through their sickness.

and when queen elizabeth told her to try focusing on “something more pleasant”?

diana ignored her and kept fighting.

Her advocacy was instrumental in helping push forward a treaty to ban the use, production, and export of land mines. She was attacked by British politicians for meddling in government policy, but the Ottawa Treaty was signed by 122 countries including the UK three months after her death. One of the anti-landmine groups in which she'd been involved received the Nobel Peace Prize.

I remember the photos of her holding hands with dying AIDS patients, of her sitting by them and listening to them like fellow human beings, at a time when tolerance was radical and most people feared AIDS was transmissible by touch.

I also remember her holding HIV-positive babies, when most people were paranoid about fluids from AIDS patients— and let's face it, babies leak. (There was a brutal subtext to criticism of Diana's AIDS work: was she neglecting, even endangering, the heir(s) to the throne?)

They did it before and they'll do it again. Gay sex was only made legal in Texas in 2003. I was at a sleepover at my best friend's house when it happened. We could hear the celebrations from the bar district down the block. We were 14 and both knew we were queer.

So yes, they're not welcome at pride because they'll turn on us in an instant. But also because cops who have been cops for a while full-on were against us only NINETEEN years ago.

Because queer people are black. Queer people are poor. Queer people are disabled. Queer people are undocumented. Queer people are Muslims. Queer people are sex workers. Queer people are homeless. Queer people are neurodivergent. Queer people can get pregnant. Queer people are addicts.

The cops are currently enforcing violent laws against all those groups and more, as well as a bunch of gratuitousness violence just because they’re bigots.
