So my beta reader for the Big Fics is an astrophysicist, right. Who is currently also writing a hard sci-fi novel about the exploration of Phobos (more power to them, I cannot with the physics required for that, best I can do is soft sci-fi/fantasy and that reminds me I should finish that story).
Anyway I was bitching about how hard it is to come up with feasible planets in Star Wars because sometimes you need a new planet from scratch and sometimes you need to know more about a planet than the 'has jungles, is probably a moon technically' than Wookieepedia will give you, and they're like 'oh yeah I can do something about that'.
So they've written (in Matlab but they swear it will run as a .exe as well and I may be conscripted to embed it as a web tool at some point) a star system generator.
You input what you know about the planet (ecosystem, population, sun colour, does it have liquid water, does it have a moon or moons, is it a moon or moons, temperature averages, atmosphere, you get me) and it will give you the... everything else about the star system, in obedience to real-universe physics. And if you input nothing you get a randomly generated star system.
And Iām like oh I know people who will be into this with a vengeance, and they're not on Tumblr, so this is me seeing who exactly would be keen on, and I cannot stress this enough, a real-physics comprehensive star system generator.
It's still in the debugging phase (last error fixed: every planet wants to have a population of exactly 5000 regardless of other factors, turned out to be a missing equals sign somewhere), but I'm psyched for this and trying to gauge interest for how high a priority 'make this an accessible web tool' needs to be.
Reblogging to drag this project over here, this is killing my notes on main so I'm giving it its own URL. Follow over here for updates on the star system generator and only the star system generator, and not on my Star Wars bullshit.
Will go through and tag interested parties when things calm down below 100 notes an hour.
Warm Weather Clothing in the Water Tribes

Woke: Katara and Sokka wear fish leather outside the tundra.
Pictured above: Nanai clothing set, Oroch robe & hat, Ainu robe (attush), another Nanai robe, and different shades of dyed fish leather
Fish leather is a popular clothing material across many arctic and subarctic cultures. Cultures that utilize fish leather include Ainu, various Siberian ethnic groups along the Amur River, and Alaska Native groups such as Inupiat & Yupik. It's labor-intensive to produce but the end product is lightweight, waterproof, and stylish.
To add to this: you can brown butter and then chill it and it will go back to its solid state. You can then use it like regular cold butter or (if you let it come to room temperature) soft butter.
There is a minor caveat: butter has some water in it, this is what boils off when you are browning it. If you are substituting browned butter in a recipe that would be sensitive to this you might need to take that into account. However I use solid browned butter in my chocolate chip cookies without any changes and it works great.
hey if this storm ends up being as it looks, you need to take it seriously, particularly if you're in a southern state and not used to storms like this. i'm not a professional but my new england experience for losing power/etc is:
fill your bathtub with water before the power goes out. in an emergency where the pipes freeze, you'll have semi-clean water. you can use this water for your pets, to wash dishes, flush your toilet, and other small important stuff. if you have no bathtub, fill as large a bin/pot/etc as you can find.
air is the best insulator. if you can tape plastic over your windows and major drafts, it will genuinely help. (they have kits for it, but i've used trash bags and duct tape). blankets/tarps/etc also work. leave space between the covering and the window - the layer of air protects you. shove towels under your doors.
in a true emergency, you can ball up newspapers and shove them into your coats/pants/etc between your base layer and your coat. it won't be comfortable but it does insulate a little better.
have an emergency plan for your pets, particularly animals like reptiles that need constant heat to survive.
the weight of the snow and ice will be an issue. plan accordingly.
black ice is a bitch. if it looks "wet", assume it is frozen. actually just assume everything is frozen for a little while.
if you do not have a generator or other emergency power source, DO NOT bring outside-use heat sources (like propane stoves) inside. you can gas yourself and die.
instead, if you truly have no heat source: focus on insulating a small amount of space in your house - a few rooms - and bring as many bodies and supplies in there as possible. do not break insulation if you can avoid it. you are a ~100-degree object. make your safe space into a blanket fort. you may go stircrazy but it is better than freezing.
if you have a fireplace you never use, check the flue and the chimney before the storm holy shit. i am not kidding about this. do not just start a fire willy nilly. you will burn your house down.
relatedly, if you start a fire and notice smoke is billowing back into the house: stop the fire immediately. your flue is closed or your chimney is backed up. you will burn your house down.
keep the fridge closed as long as possible; it lets the air out. but honestly like, my family has used snow as a fridge a lot. stuff that needs to stay cool will be less of an issue than things that need to get warm. plan accordingly.
most canned things can be eaten cold, but check the label. if you have a little sterno fire, it can go a long way.
if you develop a headache and feel weirdly sleepy, you may be forced to open a window. you might have carbon monoxide poisoning.
every year people die while shoveling snow. it is actually not very safe as a chore tbh. you need to go slow and take lots of breaks. you should also 100% wait until the snow has actually passed, only because when it starts shifting and undoes all your work, it will piss you the hell off.
have drinking water somewhere easily accessible. a lot more of it than you think completely necessary tbh.
fill your gas tank. it will help prevent your lines from freezing.
if you have a battery-powered light that's not very strong, put it under a water jug, it'll throw more light. idk why it works but it works.
just because you know how to drive in the snow doesn't mean other people know how to drive in the snow. better to just not.
your device probably has a "low power mode". probably best to just keep it on asap rather than be taken by surprise tbh. the battery will last longer.
great news to fanfiction writers: it really is better if y'all take one bed and huddle together for warmth. do not strip out of your clothes, though, i have no idea who the hell decided that was the smart thing to do. you want to keep at least a layer of leggings and a tight shirt on. the goal is to find the fine line between "warm" and "sweating" - you want to stay as dry as possible for as long as possible.
your hair, eyelashes, and nosehairs can freeze. just from personal experience: try not to rub or touch them, it can snap your hair off and then you'll be very sad.
hypothermia is a lot faster and more evil than most people expect. watch for shivering, confusion, and unexplained exhaustion. if someone stops shivering, that is not always a good sign. if you think you/someone you love has hypothermia, warm them up slowly. often this is through rubbing/friction (or a heat source if available). keep them awake and try to feed them something.
same for frostbite: don't just shove your hands into a fire. warm any affected area slowly. fair warning, as the blood recirculates, it will hurt :(
those blue rubber examination gloves under other gloves can help even very-cold hands stay warm.
liquor is not a good idea to drink right now, sorry beloved. but vodka/rubbing alcohol does work as an excellent de-icer if you need something small done quickly (like a lock/door handle). it's just, like, expensive in comparison to other things lol
"i don't eat that much anyway i'll be fine" that's the devil talking. you will not be. you will also probably be burning way more calories than normal. let the soft animal of your body eat a bunch of delicious snacks.
good luck i love you stay warm out there everyone

[Image ID: a thread of tweets from š„EasterGryffonš (@CherryGryffon). The text is in white, with a blue-black background. The first tweet reads:
ATTN: ANYONE WITH NO HEATING OR POWER CURRENTLYĀ
I know it's cold, I have some tips for you, thanks to having been through this before, many times. š§µĀ
Please RT the thread if you know anyone without power currently! š¤
The second tweet reads:Ā
- Choose 1 room to inhabitĀ - Move all furniture to external walls - Move your mattress to the center of the 1 room - Block pets from leaving that room, put all needs in it - If your fridge is warming up, put all perishable items in a trash bag and place outside, form snow around
The third tweet reads:
- If you have plants, move them in the room with you - If you have a small space heater, move it in that room with you - Hang thick blankets or large towels in all the windows - If a sunny day arrives before power, open curtains when sun hits directly, then put back up
The fourth tweet reads:
- Wear multiple layers of clothing - If your pets are too cold, put socks on their feet and/or other clothing you have that fits them - Roll clothing or towels and block all door and window gaps - Throw all your dirty clothes on the floor, covering every space you can
The fifth tweet reads:
Your body heat will warm that room if you remain in ONLY that room. You want to use anything you can to add insulation between you, and the outside. Hence covering and blocking all floors, windows, and walls. Now isn't the time to have a clean house, it's the time to survive.
The sixth tweet reads:
Late addition thanks to a friend of mine:Ā
Ā If you have, or can get, bubble wrap, tape that to all windows, as it creates a kind of double insulation!
/End ID]
Every removable pillow and cushion goes in that room, against the walls.
Any kind of cardboard or foamcore can be pressed into window wells or taped over. Put wadded up newspaper or bubble wrap between the pane and the foamcore. Duct or painter's tape can hold the cardboard or foamcore to the wall. Mound laundry and blankets around you. Make sure pets have a similarly squishy bed to curl up in. Pet carriers are great for huddling in, and it's good to have them out anyway in case you MUST relocate. Food and water go close enough they don't have to come all the way out, if they don't want to.
Remember that to insulate, air pockets are necessary. Don't pack clothes or newspaper loose, but don't squish all the air out either. Insulation is made with foam or blown fiber for a reason. Air pockets in a non conductive material trap the cold instead of passing it on.
It is honestly way less miserable stuck in a single, insulated room than free roaming a house that is cold.
If your area is expected to be hard hit, prepare some of this in advance.
Keep your phone charged BEFORE the power goes out! Put it back on the charger when it reaches 80%, I am not kidding.
And, final tip, if you go outside and get REAL cold, take your clothes OFF when you get back and put different ones on. Preferably ones the cats have been laying on, but even if they are cool, as long as they are warmer than the ones you have been in outside, you will warm up faster. Even swapping just outer layers is helpful.
OH!!! Also, don't burn candles in the weatherproofed room. Bad for pets anyway, and they will use your oxygen and put carbon monoxide into the air, and that can make you sick. For real, even in a big house, constant candles will make you feel so gross after a while, and carbon monoxide BUILDS UP, from what I understand, it doesn't purge through lungs like carbon dioxide, it binds in your blood like oxygen and circulates like oxygen, using up space the oxygen would be using. It will build up over hours or days and make you feel nauseated, grody, headachy, and just generally foul. They are warm, but they aren't good for you. I made myself real sick like this in '07. Don't make my mistake.
In a pinch, stuffed animals or any kind of plushies will make great insulation.Ā I spent my first night in my first apartment in winter sleeping under a mountain of stuffed animals because I could not find my blankets.Ā Worked like a charm!
The southern states in the US are expecting to get hit with severe winter weather this weekend (temperatures below freezing, ice, and snow). The type that we do not experience on the regular. Speaking as a southerner, many of us are not good at coping with this type of thing. I want to emphasize something: this is not our faults. The infrastructure in southern states were not built to be suitable for this type of weather. The supplies we have available to us to deal with snow and ice aren't nearly as vast as northern states because this type of weather is not normal for us.
That being said, it would be wise to prepare in every way possible while there is still time. Even if it doesn't turn out as bad as predicted, better to be safe than sorry. Here is a checklist of things to consider:
speaking of peeing the bed it's been long enough that i can tell this story publicly. in high school i went to a party at some house with no adults, as you sometimes would, and at the end of the night like 10 people all clonked out together in the same bed. fully clothed, one of those teenage moments where you're like wow heehee how rule-breaking, because sure a lot of our parents wouldn't like us sleeping in a bed with a bunch of other teenagers and no adult supervision blah blah. fond memories. anyway.
i'm an extremely light sleeper, so i barely slept, and sometime around 6 am, i woke up to a girl totally panicking, very quietly, because she peed the bed in her sleep. and listen. this wasn't a group of mean kids by any measure. but there's no level of kindness or understanding in the world that will make peeing the bed when you're 17, surrounded by people you only sort of know, a gentle blow.
so i sat up and she was like "oh my god" and I signaled at her to be absolutely silent and I said I'd be right back. And I crawled over everyone and out of the bed like a stupid cat.
and the thing is, by senior year i wasn't getting bullied much anymore. i was generally pretty well liked by my peers, but, if this makes sense, people still didn't always expect very much from me. i was still figuring out how to mask (autistic) and i still often said or did something that made everyone remember i'm weird and they'd just be like "well. that's story for you. i guess." and for the most part i'd become pretty secure in that.
so what i'm saying is i had nothing to lose and this girl had everything to lose.
so i went downstairs and i made tomato soup. and by "made" i mean i put a whole can of tomato soup in a too-small mug and microwaved it until it was lukewarm so as to be convincingly "made" but not so hot to burn someone.
and then i walked back upstairs, and no longer like a cat, i clumsily "attempted" to crawl back into bed, loudly lost my balance, and spilled tomato soup all over the girl and her lap and several other people's laps and heads and the mattress.
everyone woke up confused and anguished and i was like, "oh my god, I'm so sorry. I just got really hungry and it's all i could find."
and everyone immediately accepted with absolutely no further questions that I would go downstairs, make tomato soup at 6 am,and bring it back to bed. everyone just begrudgingly climbed onto the floor and went back to sleep while I put the bedding right into the laundry.
i don't even know this girl's name. i only remembered this story recently because i'm in my hometown for a few months and recently a high school acquaintance said, "hey. do you remember spilling soup on everyone after prom? why did you do that?" and for a moment i genuinely did not and i stared at them completely dumbfounded while the memory loaded and then i started laughing too hard to answer for 2 minutes.
the best part is i can tell this story, and even if it reaches the people who were there, none of them will know which one of them peed the bed. thanks to tomato soup.
people keep pointing out how bewildering this must have been from her point of view and it's making me laugh to tears. i never considered it. i had such a solid plan in my head. i went downstairs to find something to dump on the bed and when i saw the tomato soup i knew it was perfect because it has a distinct smell that would cover anything else and a color which would do the same.
i was so focused on my mission that in the 14 years since i've never once considered what it must have been like for her to decide to trust me because she had no other options, sit there in anguish for three minutes, and then watch me walk back into the room and dump soup on everyone.
The tailors at Colonial Williamsburg made a suit for their cat
The best part is that they were inspired by a diary entry from 1775, written by a 12 year old tailorās apprentice who had been left unsupervised all day and decided to make a suit for a cat. Hereās a link to the blog post about it, but Iāll just paste the whole diary entry here:
āI had been at work about two months when Christmas came on ā and here I must relate a little anecdote. The principal [the tailor] and his lady were invited to a party among their friendsā¦while it devolved on me to stay at home and keep house. There was nothing left me in charge to do, only to take care of the house. There was a large cat that generally lay about the fire. In order to try my mechanical powers, I concluded to make a suit of clothing for puss, and for my purpose gathered some scraps of cloth that lay about the shop-board, and went to work as hard as I could. Late in the evening I got my suit of clothes finished; I caught the cat, put on the whole suit ā coat, vest, and small-clothes [breeches] ā buttoned all on tight, and set down my cat to inspect the fit.Ā
āUnfortunately for me there was a hole through the floor close to the fireplace, just large enough for the cat to pass down; after making some efforts to get rid of the clothes, and failing, pussy descended through the hole and disappeared; the floor was tight and the house underpinned with brick, so there was no chance of pursuit. I consoledĀ myself with a hope that the cat would extricate itself from its incumbrance, but not so; night came and I had made on a good fire and seated myself for some two or three hours after dark, when who should make their appearance but my master and mistress and two young men, all in good humor, with two or three bottles of rum. After all were seated around the fire, who should appear amongst us but the cat in his uniform. I was struck speechless, the secret was out and had no chance of concealing; the cat was caught, the whole work inspected and the question asked, is this your dayās work? I was obliged to answer in the affirmative; I would then have been willing to take a good whipping, and let it stop there, but no, to complete my mortification the clothes were carefully taken off the cat and hung up in the shop for the inspection of all customers that came in.ā
I recently had surgery, and at the time I came home, I had both my cat and one of my grandma's cats staying with me.
- Within hours of surgery, I wake up from a nap to my cat gently sniffing at my incisions with great alarm.
- I was not allowed to shower the first day after surgery, and the cats, seeing that The Large Cat is not observing its cleaning ritual, decided I must be gravely disabled and compensated by licking all the exposed skin on my arms, face, and legs.
- I currently have to sleep with a pillow over my abdomen because my cat insists on climbing on top of me and covering my incisions with her body while I sleep (which is very sweet but not exactly comfortable without the pillow). She also lays across me facing my bedroom door, presumably on guard for attackers who may try to harm me while I'm sleeping and injured.
That's love. šāā¬šā¤ļø
cats are so very unclear on what is wrong with us but they want to help
Last time I had a really bad migraine my cat curled herself round my head and purred sympathetically, and actually stayed there through two of her normal mealtimes. It wasn't until I was able to stagger to the kitchen and grab a protein bar for myself that she gave a very small, polite miaow to the effect of "while you're up... could you get something for me too?"
She does look exceptionally polite and caring, it has to be said. š
[id: photo of a gray cat with aqua eyes, looking up politely but beseechingly at the camera.]/end id.
Fun fact, cats purr at a frequency that has been shown to promote healing, so when they lay on you and purr when you're sick or injured they might actually be helping, even if only a little bit!

Iāve decided to tell you guys a story about piracy.
I didnāt think I had much to add to the piracy commentary I made yesterday, but after seeing some of the replies to it, I decided itās time for this story.
Here are a few things we should get clear before I go on:
1) This is a U.S. centered discussion. Not because I value my non U.S. readers any less, but because I am published with a U.S. publisher first, who then sells my rights elsewhere. This means that the fate of my books, good or bad, is largely decided on U.S. turf, through U.S. sales to readers and libraries.
2) This is not a conversation about whether or not artists deserve to get money for art, or whether or not you think I in particular, as a flawed human, deserve money. It is only about how piracy affects a bookās fate at the publishing house.Ā
3) It is also not a conversation about book prices, or publishing costs, or what is a fair price for art, though it is worthwhile to remember that every copy of a blockbuster sold means that the publishing house can publish new and niche voices. Publishing canāt afford to publish the new and midlist voices without the James Pattersons selling well.Ā
It is only about two statements that I saw go by:Ā
1) piracy doesnāt hurt publishing.Ā
2) someone who pirates the book was never going to buy it anyway, so itās not a lost sale.
Now, with those statements in mind, hereās the story.
Itās the story of a novel called The Raven King, the fourth installment in a planned four book series. All three of its predecessors hit the bestseller list. Book three, however, faltered in strange ways. The print copies sold just as well as before, landing it on the list, but the e-copies dropped precipitously.Ā
Now, series are a strange and dangerous thing in publishing. Theyāre usually games of diminishing returns, for logical reasons: folks buy the first book, like it, maybe buy the second, lose interest. The number of folks who try the first will always be more than the number of folks who make it to the third or fourth. Sometimes this change in numbers is so extreme that publishers cancel the rest of the series, which you may have experienced as a reader ā beginning a series only to have the release date of the next book get pushed off and pushed off again before it merely dies quietly in a corner somewhere by the flies.
So I expected to see a sales drop in book three, Blue Lily, Lily Blue, but as my readers are historically evenly split across the formats, I expected it to see the cut balanced across both formats. This was absolutely not true. Where were all the e-readers going? Articles online had headlines like PEOPLE NO LONGER ENJOY READING EBOOKS IT SEEMS.
Really?
There was another new phenomenon with Blue Lily, Lily Blue, too ā one that started before it was published. Like many novels, it was available to early reviewers and booksellers in advanced form (ARCs: advanced reader copies). Traditionally these have been cheaply printed paperback versions of the book. Recently, e-ARCs have become common, available on locked sites from publishers.Ā
BLLBās e-arc escaped the site, made it to the internet, and began circulating busily among fans long before the book had even hit shelves. Piracy is a thing authors have been told to live with, itās not hurting you, itās like the mites in your pillow, and so I didnāt think too hard about it until I got that royalty statement with BLLBās e-sales cut in half.Ā
Strange, I thought. Particularly as it seemed on the internet and at my booming real-life book tours that interest in the Raven Cycle in general was growing, not shrinking. Meanwhile, floating about in the forums and on Tumblr as a creator, it was not difficult to see fans sharing the pdfs of the books back and forth. For awhile, I paid for a service that went through piracy sites and took down illegal pdfs, but it was pointless. There were too many. And as long as even one was left up, that was all that was needed for sharing.Ā
I asked my publisher to make sure there were no e-ARCs available of book four, the Raven King, explaining that I felt piracy was a real issue with this series in a way it hadnāt been for any of my others. They replied with the old adage that piracy didnāt really do anything, but yes, theyād make sure there was no e-ARCs if that made me happy.Ā
Then they told me that they were cutting the print run of The Raven King to less than half of the print run for Blue Lily, Lily Blue. No hard feelings, understand, they told me, itās just that the sales for Blue Lily didnāt justify printing any more copies. The series was in decline, they were so proud of me, it had 19 starred reviews from pro journals and was the most starred YA series ever written, but that just didnāt equal sales. They still loved me.
This, my friends, is a real world consequence.
This is also where people usually step in and say, but thatās not piracyās fault. You just said series naturally declined, and you just were a victim of bad marketing or bad covers or readers just actually donāt like you that much.
Hold that thought.Ā
I was intent on proving that piracy had affected the Raven Cycle, and so I began to work with one of my brothers on a plan. It was impossible to take down every illegal pdf; Iād already seen that. So we were going to do the opposite. We created a pdf of the Raven King. It was the same length as the real book, but it was just the first four chapters over and over again. At the end, my brother wrote a small note about the ways piracy hurt your favorite books. I knew we wouldnāt be able to hold the fort for long ā real versions would slowly get passed around by hand through forum messaging ā but I told my brother: I want to hold the fort for one week. Enough to prove that a point. Enough to show everyone that this is no longer 2004. This is the smart phone generation, and a pirated book sometimes is a lost sale.
Then, on midnight of my book release, my brother put it up everywhere on every pirate site. He uploaded dozens and dozens and dozens of these pdfs of The Raven King. You couldnāt throw a rock without hitting one of his pdfs. We sailed those epub seas with our own flag shredding the sky.
The effects were instant. The forums and sites exploded with bewildered activity. Fans asked if anyone had managed to find a link to a legit pdf. Dozens of posts appeared saying that since they hadnāt been able to find a pdf, theyād been forced to hit up Amazon and buy the book.
And we sold out of the first printing in two days.
Two days.
I was on tour for it, and the bookstores I went to didnāt have enough copies to sell to people coming, because online orders had emptied the warehouse. My publisher scrambled to print more, and then print more again. Print sales and e-sales became once more evenly matched.
Then the pdfs hit the forums and e-sales sagged and it was business as usual, but it didnāt matter: Iād proven the point. Piracy has consequences.
Thatās the end of the story, but thereās an epilogue. Iām now writing three more books set in that world, books that Iām absolutely delighted to be able to write. Theyāre an absolute blast. My publisher bought this trilogy because the numbers on the previous series supported them buying more books in that world.Ā But the numbers almost didnāt. Because even as I knew I had more readers than ever, on paper, the Raven Cycle was petering out.Ā
The Ronan trilogy nearly didnāt exist because of piracy. And already I can see in the tags how Tumblr users are talking about how they intend to pirate book one of the new trilogy for any number of reasons, because I am terrible or because they wouldĀ ārather die than pay for a bookā. As an author, I canāt stop that. But pirating book one means that publishing cancels book two. This aināt 2004 anymore. A pirated copy isnātĀ āgood advertisingā orĀ āgreat word of mouthā orĀ ānot really a lost sale.ā
Thatās my long piracy story.Ā
I made a map to express the way I feel about the geography of Middle Earth because JRRT suffers from something I like to call āhas never seen a mountain range in his lifeā
The mountains come from the same place as the light and the music.
+++
But let's not pretend mountains are the only way that Tolkien was like "meh", when creating landforms. This world is either flat or round, depending on your species and the state of your soul.
Also, to be fair, Fellowship came out in 1954 and we didn't nail down tectonic theory until 1960, so
#my dad legit made an entire class at my college for fantasy worldbuilding cuz this map pissed him off so much#he has a PhD in maps btw (via @dragonpyre)
prev this is the funniest thing I've read all day
I want to take that course. Failing that, maybe @dragonpyre 's dad should write a book
Not this again. The mountains around Mordor are Like That because they were raised by the power of the Ring. They are entirely unnatural and are meant to look it.
A Demi god who had the power to shape the earth and was introduced by singing in disharmony with the song of creation made a fortification using the land itself that looks unnatural and disharmonious with the rest of the world?
Itās almost like the world building reinforces the narrative or something.
So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. Sheās 5ā² 11ā³ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and itās difficult to find natural fiber clothes that arenāt made of cotton
c. Sheās a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked āSo where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isnāt polyesterā and mom was like āgo ask your sisterā
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like āGET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR Uā and honestly Iām thrilled about this
āWhere did u get all thisā
āBets, u know Iām a 15th degree blackbelt of buying shit on the internetā

I donāt know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when Iām watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(Iāve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what Iād go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.
Renaissance Fabrics is good for all sorts of things
Mood doesnāt specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
For wools, I cannot recommend Woolsome enough! Theyāre a bit more expensive then the above links, but they have a spectacular range of colours and weights, as well as diamond pattern and herringbone weaves. They also have a range of linens, though not as extensive.
Historical fabrics for re-enactors
Tiedtohistory.com has sheer voile linen
The Linen Lab has a variety of weaves, weights, and colors available
Period Fabric has a variety of wools, but switch to the full website if youāre on mobile

My favouritest sport fact ever is that in 1990s 2 cardiac surgeons watched an f1 race to save the lives of countless kids. The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) kept losing the lives of patients after successful heart surgeries. Specifically the 10-15 minutes after a bonefide clinically successful surgery patients would die:
And so the two surgeons filmed a handover after heart surgery and sent it to the Ferrari pitcrew who were told to critique and improve handover process
And from this:
we got this:
The error rate during patien handovers dropped from 30% to 10% with the F1 informed protocol.
I literally love this fact so much because being an pitcrew member is such a thankless job because theyre underpaid and overworked mechanics and they literally saved lives in this instance.
Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital turned to Formula 1 for answers. By studying Ferrariās pit-stop teamwork, they redesigned how patien
I love this!
And it that it wasn't a one and done.
The doctors went to the race tracks to watch the car changes and the pit crews went to the hospitals and watched a live transfer and offered suggestions and they kept working with them to improve.
After there was a successful improvement of the most vital metrics of a handover of a patient from surgery to ICU, the pit crews also worked with other hospitals for other procedures and it's now a whole thing of trying to apply the specialized, streamlined and speedy teamwork and nonverbal coordination of pit crews to other high-risk fields.
This is a perfect example of how two very different fields of knowledge meeting can make a huge leap forward in progress.
watching a movie at home circa like, 2001 was like
put your TV on channel 2 so the VCR will work
open up the clamp shell case that held the VHS that has that satisfying crrlikkkkkk
put in the movie
gdi it has to be rewound
press STOP and then rewind because its so much faster that way
start the movie and it takes a few seconds for the movie to actually start cause you rewound to the VERY beginning
FBI will get you if you illegally distribute or exhibit this movie
and then. because you forgot that movies are always so much louder than TV
