Every day I discover forms of art I could not have concieved of before, and I am in awe of being alive.
There is a lot to be said about reading Eicha on Tisha B'Av, and learning from the past, and understanding the sinat chinam that led to the destruction of the First and Second Temple, and avoiding this baseless hatred that leads to internal divisions that can tear us apart from the inside.
And yet, especially in regards to the destruction of the Second Temple, we must also recognize that we were facing down the Roman Empire IN ITS PRIME.
When Golden Age Rome wanted you dead, you were dead. The Pax Romana was as much a threat as it was a promise.
And so, with this additional understanding, we must not take on any undue self-blame that comes from internalized antisemitism.
In Rome, we were facing an enemy that was much more powerful than than the Babylonian Empire, which was defeated only a few decades later by the ascendant Persian Empire.
The Roman Empire of 70 CE was a WAR MACHINE. Just a few decades prior, Rome under Emperor Claudius had successfully launched an invasion and conquest of Britain, which even Julius Caesar had been unable to achieve during the Gallic Wars. Rome of 70 CE under Emperor Vespasian was young and resource rich, and even the corruption, debauchery, and madness of previous Emperors like Nero and Caligula did nothing to dampen the War Machine.
We were truly David against Goliath, and it is easy to think that we lost. The Romans destroyed our Temple. They slaughtered us by the thousands. They dragged many of us into slavery in Roman Diaspora. They forced us to build their Theatre of Death -- the Colosseum. And only a few decades later in 135 CE, the Romans under Emperor Hadrian crushed the Bar Kokhba Revolt, slaughtered our people, and even tried to wipe us off the literal map by renaming our land after our enemies.
But did we lose?
No. We we won.
Because we outlived them.
We outlived the Roman Empire, just like we outlived the Babylonian Empire. Just like we will outlive the Islamic Regime that has hijacked Iran.
Because, who are the Romans now? Certainly not an Empire. Nowadays, Roma is a city in Italia. The Romans of today dress as plastic gladiators and sell cheap souvenirs to tourists who come to see the Colosseum that our enslaved ancestors built.
We Jews are still a people. We worship Hashem now as we did then, with the provision, inspired from Hosea 6:6, that Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai used to change the course of our history:
For I desire loving kindness, not sacrifice; Devotion to G-d, rather than burnt offerings.
It is still crucial to acknowledge that sinat chinam is what contributed to bringing down the walls of our Temple in 70 CE. The Romans were masters at sowing discord within a population -- they recognized that it was much easier to sack a city when the people within were divided against each other. And so we must remember that we must NEVER AGAIN fall prey to the machinations of enemies that seek to turn us against each other.
AND we must also acknowledge the most important reality of all: WE ARE STILL HERE. We have survived every empire that has tried to destroy us:
The promise made to our forefathers holds also for us For not just one enemy has risen against us to destroy us But in every generation they rise against us to destroy us And the Holy One Blessed Be He saves us from their hands.
We've survived every empire that has sought to destroy us, and most important of all, we must remember this -- every empire that has sought to destroy us was itself destroyed:
Haman will always hang on the gallows he prepared for Mordecai.
Maybe in another world Beit HaMikdash still stands
The children singing and playing in the streets of Yerushalayim
We were never forced off our land, taken in chains to Rome
The great fire never raged through the land and devoured us and destroyed all we had
We never had to flee, refugees in a foreign land
Maybe.
This hits hard right now

Moon gazing in Lugano, Switzerland
brus.scatti

Moon, Jupiter and its 4 Moons.
Hey. Why isnât the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isnât that fucked up? Does anyone else think thatâs absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! Thatâs a big deal! Iâve never thought about it before but now that I have, itâs ridiculous to me that thatâs not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why donât we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
Itâs July 20th. Thatâs the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. Iâm ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and Iâm going to have a goddamn potluck. Youâre all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
MOON DAY MONDAY THIS MONTH NOT A DRILL!!!!!
Holy fuck
This works best if you keep windows closed.
Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.
This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.
https://tombuildsstuff.blogspot.com/2013/06/better-box-fan-air-purifier.html
A better more efficient and odor eliminating homemade air purifier than just taping a 20x20x1 filter to a box fan. Sometimes you need to
If you live on the west coast of the United States, fire season is coming and this is vital.
Weâve been using one, and theyâre great. Might try to make the double filter version this year.
theyve been doing a bunch of studies on this during the pandemic and this design is best! 4 filters and a shroud to optimize flow rate.

Iâve personally used both the flat single-filter version AND the triangular two-filter version, and based on subjective personal experience I would argue that the benefits from the second filter, both in terms of airflow and filtration, are absolutely worth it. If you need a makeshift air filter and you have two filters to work with, build the triangle (if not the box, i have no idea how good that one works but based on the info here i presume itâs a fair bit better.)
This trick works. We use it in my house.
If anyone wants aesthetic inspo or design ideas check R/CrBoxes
We literally built one this morning because the air quality had gotten so bad from all the wildfire smoke coming in from Canada (and we live closer to NYC ffs). I was so sick when I woke up this morning and my eyes were red and irritated and itchy. My mouth and throat felt constantly dry despite being properly hydrated. I was constantly sneezing.
Our cube has only been running for about five hours. My mouth no longer feels dry. My eyes are mostly back to normal. Sneezing has been greatly reduced. Iâm still sick and that might take a while, but this is a HUGE improvement. The whole cube costs less than $100 to make and that included getting the materials delivered through Door Dash.
Build yourself a cube or whatever variation is necessary for your budget/living space. It will make a difference, I promise.

Absolutely. They should also learn how to clean the vegetables prior to eating them so their meals are safe to eat.
making the radical claim "11 year old children should be taught how to make extremely simple food" has resulted in people making arguments like "I wasnt allowed to plug in electronics until I was 16 and I think this is super normal actually" and "children dont know what ratios are so its unfair to expect them to be able to comprehend the idea of adding equal amounts rice and water to a rice cooker" and I gotta say originally I thought maybe I was being too judgy but now I feel very secure in my opinion because what the fuck
Children might not know what ratios are in the sense of 1:1 notation, but they are more than capable of understanding 'you have to use the same amount of water and rice otherwise it goes wrong'.
In addition to this, cooking is an excellent way to teach children scaling and ratio in Real Life.
"Children don't understand-" AND THAT'S WHY IT IS YOUR JOB TO TEACH THEM????? LIKE HELLO??? THEY CAN LEARN??????
My wife was making full meals for her family at age 9.
I was 7 or 8 when I made french toast for the first time, for a sunday family breakfast.
in hindsight, I probably could've used a bit more adult supervision, because I... didn't actually use a recipe? I felt like I didn't need one. I had seen people make french toast before, I knew how it worked, I didn't need to go get a stool so I could reach the shelf with the cookbooks.
making french toast is easy. you just dip slices of bread in the egg mixture and then you cook them like grilled cheese sandwiches. and of course I knew how to make an egg mixture...
...I'd made scrambled eggs before.
I have no memory of how it tasted, but to this day, my parents assure me that french toast with salt and pepper instead of cinnamon and vanilla is surprisingly good. I do not think they are lying to me. but I have never quite had the courage to recreate that particular culinary experience.
anyway I didn't injure myself or give anyone food poisoning or start a fire or anything like that, so I can confidently say that childrenâif properly taughtâare very much capable of cooking.
but, uh. unless you're feeling adventurous, you should probably make sure they're using an actual recipe.
To whoever needs to hear this, because I certainly did a few years back, you donât need to eat âlike an adultâ. You are allowed to prep meals or snacks like youâre a child, and I donât mean you need to treat yourself like youâre immature, but youâre allowed to give yourself the same grace, patience and willingness to compromise as you would a little kid.
If you donât like the textures of vegetables, you can blend them up and mix them into something tasty. If you struggle to cook a proper lunch, you can just make yourself a luncbox full of snacks or sandwiches that you can easily take out the fridge later on and pick at. If snacks or ready-meals targeted at children look easier or more appealing, you can just buy them. If you want to cut the crusts off your bread or use cookie cutters to shape your sandwiches into fun shapes, do it!
âIt doesnât matter what you eat, whatâs important is just eatingâ is a crucial philosophy to take on board, but the other important thing to keep in mind is that absolutely no one should control how you eat your food. I donât care if itâs considered childish, if changing how you eat something gets you to eat it in the first place, make the change. Let yourself eat exactly how you want to.
cheese on broccoli in no way changes the nutritional benefits of eating broccoli smother her she loves to be eaten however you get it done
honestly unless you live near somewhere where broccoli is grown/from a local grocery store buying it frozen is prolly for the best bc a lot of especially large chain stores tend to keep their produce like broccoli moist by misting it fairly often and that has the intended affect of making it look more appetizing but the unintended effect of shortening the lifespan of your produce significantly and increasing the chances of mold to grow

Reducing the calories does not inherently increase the healthiness of your food.
Reducing the fat content does not inherently increase the healthiness of your food.
Reducing the sugars does not inherently increase the healthiness of your food.
The only way to increase the healthiness of your food is by adding additional nutrients to it.
I saw a video of someone complaining that fucking chicken tikka masala "wasn't healthy" so they made a "healthier version" that was, in fact, LESS HEALTHY. Because they made it with only fat free dairy products, rendering many of the vitamins they would have otherwise gotten from that meal utterly useless, because the body needs fats in order to absorb them properly.
Two tbsp of brown sugar does not render a meal "unhealthy." Full fat dairy products do not render a meal "unhealthy." Calorically dense foods do not render a meal "unhealthy."
If you're really concerned about your health, add more nutrients. Eat extra veggies or extra protein. But you're not actually worried about your health. You're worried about your weight.
You're worried that in the process of eating a homemade meal with lean protein and veggies and a rich, delicious sauce you will consume more energy than you can use today.
You're worried that energy might be stored so that your body can use it when it needs to later.
You're worried that your relationship with gravity might change. You've been taught to worry about that. You've been taught to misconstrue manufacturered body issues as being "health conscious." But you're not doing things to promote health. You're just trying to reduce your energy consumption no matter what.
And I am begging you to consider, that this is not actually a "health conscious" mindset at all.
Poverty and oppression make people fatter
A common fat-phobic belief is that fat people are fat because they overeat. A recent submission to @facebooksexismâ perfectly illustrates this stereotype and the harmful classist attitudes it perpetuates:Â
Like most fat-phobic beliefs, this stereotype is completely wrong.
It is well accepted in public health science that food insecurity â which is the lack of consistent, dependable access to enough food for active, healthy living â predicts higher body weight.Â
Some reasons for this association include:
Limited resources and lack of access to nutritious, affordable foods. Heavily processed, low-nutrition foods are usually cheaper, but are more calorie dense and less satisfying to eat. Â
Cycles of food deprivation and overeating. Low income people often run out of money for necessities like food before their next paycheck arrives, resulting in extended periods of hunger and starvation followed by periods of compensatory eating when the paycheck arrives. Such eating patterns cause weight gain over time.
High levels of stress, anxiety, & depression, all of which cause physiological changes resulting in weight gain over time.
Limited access to health care. Many chronic health conditions, like polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid dysfunction, and type II diabetes, cause weight gain when left untreated.Â
All of this means that systematic oppression causes people to be fat for reasons that are outside of their personal control, and that poor fat people are not lying when they report that they cannot afford to put food on the table. Stop spreading the harmful, oppressive, and fat-phobic belief that you can judge a personâs nutrition or eating habits by the size of their body.  Â
- Mod D
I was skinny when I had food security. Then when I was poor, my food security went away and I gained about 50 lbs in five years.
This.
I am 100% positive that all the weight Iâve gained is due to the drama Iâve had to endure the last few years: divorce, chronic depression, lower monthly income, less access to healthier foods, extended periods of food shortage, etc.
Back when I was earning WAY more money AND still living with my (now) ex-husband, I weighed 185 lbs.
Now, I weigh 265 lbs.
Also you usually have the time to exercise, afford gym memberships, trainers, etc when you arenât poor.
Poor people know that they will go hungry if they try to buy all that overpriced âhealthyâ food that they cant afford, thats out of the way and the corner store is right there offering you an all carb and sugar meal for $5 at most.
But fatphobia demands you abstain from doing the actual math.Â
Why do so when the idea that to be thin is to automatically be smart, pure, disciplined and most of it allâ fautless? Fatphobes get high on that false paradigm. It makes them feel good about themselves.
