Ok. Just a thought. The next Avatar is born almost immediately after the previous one dies, right? Considering Kyoshi would have been pretty famous, people would know when she passed and, don't you think it's possible some people reasonably concluded/hoped that Sozin had a good chance of being the next Avatar? Partly because he's already a well-known figure, a good firebender etc. Roku and him were born on the same day, after all, it could just as easily have been either of them (not counting the fact that it's absolutely statistically possible that it could be some random unknown FN baby also sharing the same birthday. I'm mentioning these two since they were both high-society kids and would be in the public eye, hence leading to speculation, more so for Sozin).
