So many people mistake that speech for amatanormativity, when it’s really just Stratt finding the weakest point in his potential arguments and systematically destroying it. It’s not that his life is valued less, it’s that Stratt is knocking down all his excuses and hoping that he’ll be brave if he has no other options.

“nitch” is the older pronunciation, and specifically (in the US) remains common in biological circles (e.g. people will usually say “an ecological nitch,” and many older biologists will correct you if you say “an ecological neesh.” this is not universal, but i would say “nitch” has by and large been considered the correct pronunciation in biological circles).
that said, i have personally never heard anyone, even a biologist, say “a nitch interest” or similar, always “a neesh interest.”
of note, both pronunciations are actually acceptable, see below from merriam-webster:
