Hear ye, hear ye! Ye AU-gust 2025 prompt list is here!

What is AU-gust? It stands for Alternate Universe August, and it is a creative challenge for everyone. Writers, artists, fans; anyone can join! Be sure to check out our FAQ for more answers! Join us on BlueSky, AO3, Discord and under the tags #au gust and #au gust 2025.

We're having a Trope Flip Fest here at the Prompt Foundry for November 2025!

We all have our favorite tropes in media and fanwork, and we all have tropes we merely tolerate or are bored of. Either way, there's lots of room to have fun exploring the possibilities of turning the usual tropes on their heads!

A big thank you to everyone who helped contribute to this list by sharing their favorite tropes! It's great to have the community chime in.

These prompts are particularly well suited to prose writers, especially fanfiction writers, since that's the realm we're drawing inspiration from this month, but all artists and forms of creative work are more than welcome to join the fun.

Feel free to combine different days’ prompts with each other, or combine them with other events, like OC-tober, Inktober, or last year's Nom Nom November! Use your OCs, your favorite characters from media, your own experiences, whatever tickles your fancy.

•A word scramble will be posted every other day starting on August 1st, 2026, at around 4 a.m. Eastern. There are 14 prompts in all, with a plethora of possible words.

•All fandoms and original works welcome! We absolutely do not believe in censorship. Please be kind, tag properly, and have a great time!

•We guarantee that there is a 7-letter word in each scramble. However, feel free to use any word(s) you find that inspire you. The word(s) you choose simply need to inspire your creation; they don't need to be a major theme.

•Use #wsc2026 #word-scramble-challenge, and there is a collection on AO3 [here] to which you can add your creations anytime starting August 1st (the collection will remain open indefinitely)!

•Will you be reblogging everything? No, this blog will remain prompts only for ease of use, but please browse through the tags and get your fandom involved! It will be more fun that way!

• This is for creators of all types: create anything! We mean anything! Write a multi-chapter fic, drabbles, one-shots, haikus, or an experimental poem. Puffy paint a t-shirt. Make a sticker or paper collage. Sketch in your journal. Take a photo. Cook a recipe. Bake. Embroider! Sew. Quilt. Mood boards. Alter a book. Send postcards to friends. Sculpt. Make a house for your pet rock! Invent a cocktail. Write letters! Create playlists! The list goes on infinitely!

August 2026 is AU-gust here at the Prompt Foundry!

Alternate Universe takes on our favorite stories—be they shows or books we love, or tales of our creation—can be a delightfully fun way to explore what makes those stories tick, what makes those characters who they are, and what in them is important to why we enjoy them.

On the other side of the coin, some settings and scenerios are popular for AUs because there's something special about that environment or situation that really tickles our brains, and it can be fun to figure out how to fit different characters and their contexts into that world.

So let's run through the multiverse and play with some AUs!

Draw, paint, sculpt, sing, write fiction, write poetry, write academic analysis—use your OCs, your favorite characters from media, your own experiences, whatever tickles your fancy.
