12. Cranberry

Raidou’s face is pale, his eyes squeezed shut. He looks, in a word, awful.

“Are you hungover?”

“Nngh.”

Sitting next to him on the sofa only provokes more dramatic groaning. “Are you ill?”

“That smoothie…”

Genma snorts. He can’t help it.

“I feel like I’m gonna turn inside out,” Raidou tells him through gritted teeth.

“The mighty assassin, brought low by the humble cranberry,” Genma sympathises through a smile. “It’ll pass.”

In the meantime, he supposes he ought to get a bucket, just in case Raidou is actually sick this time.

“No more ready-made smoothies,” he warns.

11. Raspberry

It’s a poor summer, and a poor harvest. Shikamaru looks down at the paltry offering of wild raspberries in his hand, and considers eating the lot. It’s tempting. He could easily say he found nothing.

Instead, he carefully guards the delicate fruit and heads back to their temporary camp. Temari is waiting.

“Here,” he extends.

Her eyes light up. “Raspberries!” A moment later, she checks herself, “Don’t you want some?”

“Nah.” His stomach twinges with longing. “I don’t really care for them.”

“Yes, you do.”

10. grape

The clearing is littered with carnage. There are senbon, kunai, and shiruken everywhere. In the midst of it all, Genma reclines against the base of a tree, seemingly without a care in the world.

“I thought we were going to train together,” Raidou said, trying not to sound disappointed.

Genma gets up unhurriedly. “We are.”

“Then what…?”

“Oh,” Genma shrugs. “I was eating grapes. See?”

To demonstrate, he spits two seeds into the air. With a flick of his wrist, they’re chased down by kunai.

9. Blackcurrant

The breeze whispers through the leaves of the fruit bushes, stirring the lazy summer warmth as they watch over their charge. Her hands are stained, the berries she’s picked almost overflowing, and she smiles without realising she’s being watched as she tries another delicate little berry.
