One time I was leaving a friend's place and an older lady with basically no English came up to me and communicated that she was very cold and needed a ride. She pointed to tell me where to go.

I almost always have either bright blue or bright pink hair these days, and it is very interesting how people divide up around it. Because I definitely have had people find me more approachable when I have vivid hair -- especially when it's blue, I get a lot more people (particularly men) striking up conversations with me about it. Which is delightful, honestly, and I would like to think the hair does indicate I'm trustworthy, since I do try to be.

But vivid hair is still culturally affiliated with nonconformity, as OP points out, and there's a fascinating level of power in Appearing Punk. Every so often I can actually see someone clock my hair and make a conscious decision Not To Fuck With That One.

It's most common when someone's being obnoxious on public transit. I guess they think since I have punk hair I will also have stereotypically punk levels of aggro, despite not being very tough-looking otherwise. It's fantastic for cooling down tense situations since all I really have to do is walk into the conflict and look disapproving. The implication that someone is about to get their ass handed to them is an incredibly false one, I can't fight worth a damn and don't escalate situations by policy, but the hair still says "Maybe don't push your luck."

Being weird and colorful certainly does say both "I'm here to help" and also "I'm here to help you through a window if you push me."
