I have a specific pet peeve of mine which I've been seeing a lot recently in the Ranma 1/2 fandom. It really bugs me when people depict Ranma Saotome as both trans-feminine and like a soft domestic type woman. I have 0 problem with interpreting Ranma as a trans woman, and I actually think there's a lot of textual evidence to back that up. But also depicting her as a soft sweet domestic type really weirds me out. Canon Ranma does enjoy being a woman sometimes! She also loves martial arts, and is fiercely competitive. She shows love and care by teasing and roughhousing. She is good at cooking, and I'd say she enjoys it (especially when it's a form of martial arts) but she doesn't take on the role of a housekeeper ever. She does enjoy wearing women's clothes, but tends to pick fashionable clothes, often ones that show more skin or are more typically 'sexy'. Idk man to me it just says something weird about ones view of women if when depicting Ranma as a woman one also reimagines her as a blushing domestic. Ranma 1/2 has tons of complicated women, and Kasumi is there if that's your thing, but Ranma doesn't fit that mold.
Like obviously everyone has their own spin on media, and the fun part of fandom is reimagining and whatnot, so I do understand different folks can have different interpretations of a character and canon doesn't always really matter. Making a fun AU doesn't really have to ground the characterization or the world in the themes or characterization of the original text. Also we are all, as I like to say, "playing dolls" here and that's the fun of it. This is just something that I don't enjoy.
