a potential series of comedic events:
the iconic all stars 2017 rozanov-hollander helmet kiss hits the internet
later, rozanov gleefully decides to repeat it when hollander scores in a regular game... against? boston?
what the hell is he doing? that guy is so weird. at least hollander, unflappable as ever, seems to take it in stride and just laughs it off. even rozanov struggles to get under hollander's skin, huh?
("can't i appreciate good hockey?" he says, later, when asked about it. "a beautiful goal is a beautiful goal, even if it is from hollander!")
("does this mean you'll kiss any opposing teammate who scores an impressive enough goal?")
("no ❤️")
rozanov scores against montreal a few minutes later, and holds out his arms to hollander expectantly. hollander's answering 😐 is so iconic it enters several people's reaction image folders once it hits the internet.
the next time hollander scores in this game his teammates are ready. they get there first. back OFF, rozanov. if ANYONE is going to kiss hollander for that beautiful goal, it's US.
all five teammates on the ice with hollander pass him around to take turns smooching his head while rozanov loudly protests he should also be allowed to have a turn and gets laughed off.
shane hollander would just like to know how he got here? why is this happening to him exactly? hello?
unfortunately for shane hollander, he gets a hat trick this game, which means the metros new tradition of "linemates, defensemen, and the goalie all have to pass hollander around for kisses" is cemented. he's not getting out of this now.
it continues on into other games. it's just a thing now. it's popular with the fans, and it always makes hollander laugh and roll his eyes, and everyone loves when a camera manages to get a close up of shane hollander (the most beautiful man in the entire league) laughing.
("jaaane i didn't mean for this to happen. i don't want to see all these other men kissing you 😭😭😭😭")
("You did this. I have no sympathy. This is directly your fault.")
("this is u right now isnt it 😾😾😾")
("Fuck off.")
the people of montreal really love this bit. not only are the crowds blowing hollander kisses every time he scores in a home game, but also he's getting ribbed about it during post-game press. Everyone Loves Cap Kissy Time
it becomes something of a montreal local meme. every time something good happens (nailed a job interview? got a promotion? got back a straight-A report card?) you have to blow a kiss to the centre bell. for captain hollander.
this is all well and good until the day they just barely lose a game to boston in overtime. and then rozanov turns to blow a kiss across the ice to hollander.
That's It. Shane Is Gonna Fucking Kill Him
mean dom ilya respecting shane’s boundaries as a punishment. shane’s doing his little “nooo 🥰🤭 dont 🤭🥰” routine and ilya immediately backs off and ends whatever they were doing.
drunk shane leaning into ilya’s shoulder, jacket off, hair messy, eyes closed and lips red from kissing and drinking wine “som’times i wizsh i could eat’your heart so that you (hiccup) you’re always inside me”
ilya, equally as drunk and suddenly a poet of profound wisdom “ ‘nd i wish i could live in your cage of ribs, the bones around your heart — the fuck whats its called, whatever — and never ever leave ever”
both nodding in complete agreement “ilya do y’think we can do voluntary organ transplants with eachother?”
“we have same blood type so yes. probably. we are rich so who cares. tomorrow we call doctor”
“okay <3”
wyatt caught all this on tape and shows the team in the morning. somehow no one is surprised, least of all hollanov
a man who has never denied himself anything meets a man who denies himself everything and the hedonist tries to lure the self-abnegator into succumbing to the pleasures of the flesh and succeeds but their rendezvous makes accidentally clear that true pleasure is derived from the perilous destructive nature of intimate connection and eventually true actual love and so we come to conclude that in fact the hedonist is the one who has never allowed himself anything true while the self-abnegator has never strayed from the path of his want and then they put them on ice skates and gave them sticks

I have been thinking about the post that said one of the biggest blow up arguments they have as a couple is Ilya opening up about taking care of his mom on her bad days and Shane saying you shouldn’t have had to do that you were a kid. like it’s been replaying in my head on a fucking loop. It’s really so… cuz like. Okay well first of all Ilya is saying it in a way of like. It was honor to have been able to care for his mama. He’s so thankful to have those memories even if they hurt. He’s so taken off guard by the idea that he shouldn’t have been doing that (not what Shane said) that it sounds very cruel and callous to him when that’s absolutely not what Shane was trying to convey. Ilya would so mad about it and so so unwilling to want to share things about his mama with Shane after like he doesn’t want Shane to judge his mom in any sort of way because any judgement on Irina trickles back down to him because he’s just like her in all the worst ways. Like he would hear “your mom shouldn’t have done that to you.” Which immediately translates back to him as “you shouldn’t do it to me. It’s unfair to make me take care of you.” and more than anything he just never wants to paint a bad picture of his mama. He wants Shane to love her without knowing her, because he’ll never know her, and that’s devastating enough. He has to love her. Ilya has to portray her and represent her in a way so that he loves her. and poor Shane truly was just sad for baby Ilya. He doesn’t think any less of Irina it’s just factual to him that Ilya should not have had to do that. He was a kid. he means it in the way of I wish Irina hadn’t been sick I wish you could have more memories of your mama taking care of you. I’m sorry. You were just a kid and I’m so sorry. And that’s not what Ilya hears at alllllllllll
Yuna has been told that Shane is autistic and does not accept this because she is autistic and does not accept this and David doesn’t need to be told Shane is autistic he knows it just doesn’t change anything for him because he is autistic in the dad way where he’s like well that’s just how things are. and Shane has been told he’s autistic, then reaffirmed by Yuna he’s definitely not autistic, then reminded by David well if you are autistic that’s okay it’s normal to be autistic. and he came out the other side like autism is normal but I’m deeply deeply weird and off putting so there must be something else wrong with me.
Rose is going Yeah I really hate giving head & kind of prefer it when a guy just goes down on me so I can just zone out the entire time. I hate when they have a beard though haha but I really like long hair. It just sucks because they always wanna talk to me during. It’s like oh my god the girls I’d make out with during theater camp were always so much better at this y’know? And Shane is googling ‘restaurants where I can have a private conversation near me’
I bet it feels good as fuck to not worry about Your Secret every single day just all day constantly worrying about Your Secret
is #yoursasha in love with ilya? was he ever?
thank you for asking. no and no they have something far more intimate and worse (were children together).

Shane and ilya playing video game hockey as each other
Everyone: omg Hollander leash your dog, Ilya is barking at opponent hockey players again
Shane Enabler Hollander: ok so Ilyusha this player has had zero assists in the entire season, he got drafted last, and finally - and this is crucial - he once scored a goal in his own team's net
Ilya Heart Eyes Rozanov: thank you my ShaneWiki this is valuable data, off I go
do you consider ilya to be an emotionally intelligent character?
ohoho this is such a fun question thank you for asking it. yes and no. i think that there is a big difference between emotional intelligence and like... the kind of hyper-attunement to small shifts in other people's moods that is actually a learned trauma response. to me, healthy emotional intelligence comes from a place of security. i can emotionally self-regulate myself, and that sense of inner calm is part of what enables me to be curious about your emotional experience and empathetic to your perspective. emotional vigilance, by contrast, comes from a place of deep fear. i never feel fully safe or secure, so i am constantly scanning other people's expressions and words to try to gauge their emotional temperature and predict whether they are going to turn on me or lash out at me. that type of emotional hyper-attunement can give you some accurate emotional information (yes, that person is upset) but that information often gets read through a trauma-distorted framework (e.g., this nice person is upset, which means they are upset with me, which means i have done something bad or have upset them in some way, which is just further evidence that i am bad, unworthy, unforgivable, which anyone who ever gets close to me is able to see). or idk... shane seemed freaked out when i called him by his first name and said he couldn't do this anymore, and that means it's over between us and there's nothing i can do to repair it, and now he's dating a woman and he must be doing it to hurt me, and so i must hurt him back to show him that i don't care and he has no power over me. like ilya's not misreading the emotion... shane IS freaked out... but because he has ZERO good communication tools he can't do anything to investigate the emotion further or to figure out why shane got overwhelmed... and because he's so bad at emotional self-regulation he spends the next few months crashing out, lashing out at others, lashing out at shane, chewing on some poor girl's ear, etc etc.
i think a big part of ilya's emotional arc in the show is starting to sloooowly, slowly move from vigilance towards security as he begins to trust shane more. like he's obviously not very far down that road yet lol (see: the rose crashout) but then i think in the cottage you see him really starting to let himself relax in shane's presence. he starts to let himself believe shane isn't going to hurt him or reject him or abandon him (at least right now, in the refuge of the cottage). and i think that's part of why he can be much more emotionally intelligent after david walks in on them... when shane's the one crashing out ilya remains calm and steady. doesn't interpret shane's freakout over the parent stuff as evidence that shane's going to ditch him or kick him out. asks what shane needs. offers to come with him. doesn't let shane leave him in the car to face his parents alone (the look he gives him when shane suggests it lmao). helps anchor shane and calm him down when shane starts having a lil panic attack over pasta. it's really interesting to me how easily he slips into that role... that scene combined with some of the other moments of real emotional intelligence (like how carefully and tenderly attuned he is to shane during sex from the first time anal scene onwards) makes me really curious about his childhood!! it's part of why i don't necessarily headcanon him as having an extremely Bad childhood before his mother died... like he learned to be tender somewhere. he learned that when someone pays careful, loving attention to you and listens to you in a curious, open way it makes you feel safe. he has ALL these layers of traumatic defense mechanisms and maladaptive coping strategies etc etc and that's why he behaves so badly so much of the time... but underneath it all that man yearns to be tender and to make the people he cares about feel safe with him... and that doesn't come from nowhere surely?? idk. interesting to think about!!!
“they think i fell on purpose” they think i fell in love with him on purpose but i didn’t choose to be gay… i tried really hard…
ok i figured it out the key difference and sum of their characters is that ilya is acting and shane is lying
now to expand, we all know it is wrong to lie to people, and it's not particularly wrong to act. however: to lie, you need to be starkly aware of what the truth of you actually is, in order to obscure it. but to act, to fully step into a role, it is better if you never know yourself at all.

I just know that Ilya gives Shane the saddest road head ever on their drive from the cottage to the airport :( sucking his man dry through tears :(
“shane is sensory seeking autism” “shane is easily overstimulated autism” actually youre both right because i am both sensory seeking and easily overstimulated by different things.
i think people overstimulate shane like nothing else. in packed rooms where everyones talking at the same time and he’s supposed to remember how to respond appropriately and they keep bumping into him and theres food smells and perfume smells shane starts dissociating after four minutes.
but on the ice where one sound is completely surrounding him and not right up in his business? shane is thriving. he loves the crowd pops when he scores and he loves the chants and jumping fans and he loves the brief all encompassing SLAM when he checks or is checked into the boards and he loves the way his gear compressed against his whole body, centering him completely in that moment.
the overlapping orchestra of a million different sounds that his brain is trying desperately to interpret all at once brings that wave of anxiety and overwhelm. but one constant loud noise or pressure, like a roaring crowd or loud music, brings him back to earth.
