now i’m thinking about an AU where when shane was younger, there was an older player on shane’s junior team who was russian, and shane had a huge shameful crush on him that he couldn’t fully admit to himself. and he rationalized it by thinking he was just really interested in russian culture, and thats why he hyperfixated super hard on studying russian, russian audiobooks in the gym and reading textbooks on the bus to games etc. and he got to a point where he was actually really good at listening and understanding, but he knew he still had trouble speaking it because try as he might he couldn’t get his mouth to make those sounds. (also he was embarrassed to practice aloud while living at home). but this older guy is just So Hot and even though shane’s already a better player than him, there’s something about this guy that makes shane’s brain short-circuit and want to impress him, so (in a move that will embarrass him for years to come) when it’s this guy’s last game before aging out of the team, shane writes out and practices a little speech in russian about how he’s so glad they had the chance to play together and that he’ll always treasure their time together. And the guy. the guy stares at him and starts laughing. says something along the lines of “never butcher my language for that faggot shit again.” and shane immediately realizes it was a huge mistake and it’s hugely embarrassing but at least he never has to see that guy again.

ohh is now a good time to tell you about this atla hollanov au i've been kicking around in my head where shane is the fire nation avatar and similar to korra, he's really good at 3 elements but he just cannot pick up water. And the council is like. well maybe he just needs to be trained by someone super disciplined like him, so they send up north to be trained by grigori, infamous waterbending master known as a hardass. And when Shane gets there, he's like Do Not interact with my lazy son, he will give you bad habits. And then of course, shane comes upon Ilya having a blast messing around with anya and giving her an ice obstacle course, and his bending is so joyful and beautiful, and it's learning from ilya in secret that actually unlocks it for Shane.
