abandonware should be public domain. force companies to actively support and provide products if they don't wanna lose the rights to them
Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.
op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.
for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.
so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.
#there is so much abandonware just...out there being used and carefully maintained#because nothing quite replicates the functionality
I did 100% of the imaging and analysis for my doctorate on a machine running Windows 95. I did not have a choice about this, that's just what my microscope's software ran on.
do you ever find something that is so funny and you want to share it with everyone but it also requires 18 layers of context spanning things like. 90s anime. aviation history. europop. canada. in order to even remotely understand why it is so funny
in the late 90s there was an anime called initial d which was all about street racing and drifting. naturally every single drift was played for great drama and excitement.
in 1999, an italian named giancarlo pasquini released a europop song under the alias dave rogers called Deja Vu. this song was picked up as the theme song for the above anime. it in turn became a meme, a shorthand for drifting and Cool Moves as a concept.
in 1983, air canada flight 143, a full sized 767, ran out of fuel halfway to edmonton, alberta. this is not something you want to have happen to a huge airplane. the flight chose to try and make an emergency landing at a nearby decomissioned airforce base (as they were falling fast and could not make it to a proper airport), where they ran into a second problem: they were falling out of the sky at 500 feet per mile, but reached gimli (the base in question) while still too high to safely land. normally a plane would just do a big loop-de-loop to lose altitude, but they had maybe three minutes of airtime left before they hit the ground: not enough time to make any kind of circle. the pilot, therefore, decided to execute a side slip to lose speed and altitude. this is Not a move you want to do with a massive 767, because airplanes are not built for that and if you screw it up that plane is hitting the ground at a high speed at a weird angle and breaking into a million pieces. nevertheless, the captain tried it... and succeeded. the plane landed perfectly, and there were no major injuries! (a couple of people did get minor injuries when evacuating the plane after.) he did it so well, in fact, that the plane was refueled, flown out of gimli a couple days later, and continued to fly for another 20 years with the nickname "Gimli Glider."
what is a side-slip, you ask?
it's drifting.
the guy goddamn drifted his 767.
in 2008, the tv show Mayday: Air Disaster featured the gimli glider with full reenactments as an episode on season five of their show.
and so, in conclusion, the thing i have been giggling to myself about all weekend:
reblog this to put a leaf on your mutuals head

A quick illustration of my favorite lesbian space necromancer <3
obviously this is AI generated slop but I keep laughing at ophelia labeled “hamlet’s brother”
very interested in the 523 likes in the corner supporting this groundbreaking interpretation of ophelia
king blyssffsttt my good friend king blyssffsttt
HAMLET My brother? KING BLYSSFFSTTT No, the other Ophelia
cuckoo to read that stupid new york times article about AI integration into the california school system where they offhandedly mention that students will get free chatgpt during school and for a year after they graduate. like yeah i'm sure. because these cash hungry morons want to create a workforce that is fully dependent on their product. whatever else they're saying is a lie. nyt writers are you all fucking stupid have your brains been rotted out. why are we laundering this as any kind of debate. it's about creating a new workforce that does not know how to function without using their product. which was provided for free long enough for them to become dependent on it so then they will pay for it because they don't know how to function in the workplace without it. start thinking now
i think part of the reason nobody wants to say the quiet part loud is because it opens the door to criticism of all of the other companies and softwares that have used this exact same profit model and once that conversation starts its never gonna stop. like yes ai is the most glaring example at the moment but any professional in any field will tell you that xyz niche proprietary software is something that they were trained on first during their education and now is foundational to their work but it also costs between $5,000-50,000 (no im not making that number up its true for someone i know) for a license each year and it continues to increase as these companies become increasingly comfortable with the way they have wormed themselves into every facet of the workforce. for my part i wouldnt be able to do my job without a niche proprietary software that costs nearly $8,000 per user per year for even the partial package that i have and the company that operates it is a monopoly. there is no other option but to know how to use it. my very employment is contingent on knowing how to use that software. and, conversely, which is the issue with ai, i would have very little idea how to do core parts of my job without it. and this isnt even getting into the conversation of pearson and professional certifications and board exams and private classes and that whole racket.
this is all to say that ai is an issue and their profit model is an issue and it does feel a step further down the path in the wrong direction just because of how much ai is intended to do for you but ai didnt invent this playbook on their own and theyre not the only ones that have to answer for this imo

The Dragon of Bures, 1405. Thought to actually be sightings of King Richard I’s escaped pet crocodile! (A belated completion of a sketch I did for Folktale Week.)
no more historic events this decade that is ENOUGH, i’m putting my foot down
History is not done with us yet my friend
I have received all manner of threat, up to and beyond “I will play a flute carved from your femur,” and yet this is the first time I’ve felt truly threatened
i knew posting this in 2022 was risky but holy fucking shit

Coming into a fandom late
Coming into a fandom early and watching it become an angry clusterfuck
Being in a dormant fandom that suddenly comes alive again after a new book/movie
Don’t forget about those who come in the midst of a fandom war.
Accuracy at its best
Being in a fandom and not even knowing there’s a war going on…
all of this shit…lol
When You’re Not In The Fandom But You’re Nosy AF
When you get into a fandom only to discover it’s dead
This gets better every time I see it.
@fuboos-mess
Being in a dead fandom…
Or being in such a tiny fandom that it feels like youre the only one
The accuracy hurts.
Being in a fandom that had a shit ending.
When you’ve been fangirling long enough, you’ve experienced all of the above.
Being in a fandom meant for kids.

I always enjoy it when a good post comes around again and has been improved by the reblogs like the years for a fine wine.
Being in a fandom when shit goes down and everyone has different opinions
When you are in a fandom and don’t care for others people opinion…..even if they are right…(believe me, I have met several of those)
Being in a fandom you never meant to join
I love this. and it’s gotten better
After abandoning a fandom you’re still a little bit emotionally invested in….
