For as much as they tell you about Stop Drop and Roll as a kid, I really expected to be on fire more times in my life.
All jokes aside, the real reason kids get drilled on βstop drop and rollβ so aggressively is because it needs to be a reflex. Sure, getting set on fire is unlikely, but if DOES happen, you will be terrified and in a lot of pain, and youβll need to handle it FAST. The default response your brain will have to that is the standard monkey brain instinctive reaction to being terrified and in pain - get the fuck away from the danger. Which is the worst possible response to being on fire, because panicking and trying to run will just fan the flames and make it much worse. But if youβve had βstop drop and rollβ beaten into your head a thousand times all your life, thereβs a good chance that in that initial moment of βoh fuck Iβm on fireβ, instead of panicking, your brain will jump straight to the trained response of βhit the ground and smother the flamesβ.
And the fact that itβs NOT a common threat is why we need to drill it so hard in the first place - instictive reactions to pain/danger are usually the correct response! Itβs survival instincts! Like, if you get a bad cut, your first reaction will be to slap a hand on it and keeo it there, because βapply pressure to bleeding woundβ is the correct response! But being set on fire just doesnβt happen enough to be a serious concern as a species, so the instinctive reaction to that happening will actually cause horrific burns and/or death, because we donβt really need a naturally programmed in response for such a rare problem.
But it does still happen sometimes, and the correct reaction is very simple, so basically programming kids to stop drop and roll if on fire is easy, harmless, and probably saves a fair amount of lives.

for a while every other post was along the lines of "having issues with your brain is no excuse for having issues with your brain"

This phrase has already entered my vocabulary re: media criticism where like. The viewer has a concrete view of what they expect a story to be based on the tropes and cliches they're used to seeing together, and when that doesn't happen, they judge it as a failed depiction of what they assumed it was going to be instead of judging it as what it actually is.
"This show is problematic because the hero didn't kill the villain at the end": When does he steal the bread?
"These two characters who were close friends throughout the series don't kiss at the end! What the fuck?": When does he steal the bread?
"This feels like it's missing a conclusion! Like, the protagonist does bad stuff and because of a critical decision he makes as a result of his major character flaws, meets tragedy in the end! Where's the part where he learns better and brings is love back from the dead and becomes a good guy and gets a happy ending?": When does he steal the fucking bread??
I heard this out as "When criticizing something, you must judge it for what it is, not what it isn't"
#this is why so many of us urge people to get a wider diet of stories
This is said with so much love; How the frick can you give so much emotion to a damn rock???
