Ok yeah, feeling extra salty so here’s the comment I left explaining why Tohru befriending Akito makes sense, actually:
Rin was living at Kazuma’s. She didn’t come “just to see Tohru.” She lived there and just…went downstairs. [note: this was in response to the poster saying something about Rin coming all the way to Kazuma’s house just for Tohru to leave to talk to her abuser]
Rin was very private about her trauma. She didn’t tell Haru what happened and hated that Hiro saw. She hated people feeling like they needed to protect her. I seriously doubt she told Tohru any of what happened.
Kyo also didn’t tell Tohru about how Akito abused him at the beach. He told her he got in a fight. That’s something Kyo did often, so even though Tohru didn’t like that he was fighting, she wouldn’t have thought it was any different from his fights with Yuki or Haru.
Tohru didn’t know about how Kisa got injured, or about Yuki’s abuse either.
Tohru did know about Hatori’s eye, and about Kureno’s situation, and about Akito beating up Momiji at the beach. But also, think about the people Tohru loves most: her mother was a violent gangster, her first friend was a violent gangster, her second friend nearly killed a boy, etc… Tohru doesn’t separate people into categories such as “abuser” and “non-abuser”, because if she didn’t befriend the violent criminals and dangerous freaks, she would have been completely alone and friendless. If she turned her back on “monsters”, she never would have met the love of her life.
Tohru is so profoundly lonely, and so when she sees Akito crying over the curse coming to an end, she empathizes with Akito’s loneliness. She befriends Akito because she knows what Akito is feeling, and that makes her feel less lonely. It is not some act of charity for Tohru to befriend Akito, it is Tohru finding someone else who understands what it’s like to be so desperately lonely, and who, in friendship, will help her be less lonely in turn.
Because not only does Tohru not reject monsters, she doesn’t pity them either. She sees them as fellow humans, and she understands their shared pain.
As for the Cat’s Room, Akito was not solely responsible for that. All the Sohma family (including Kyo!) accepted that. It was a tradition with hundreds, perhaps thousands of years of history behind it. It’s really, really hard to change unjust practices with that kind of longevity. But Akito did that, and that’s a bigger deal than I think people realize. Akito was abusive and cruel for years not because she was some irredeemable monster, but because that was literally what she was taught. Overcoming all that to end the curse took a huge amount of strength and courage I wish people acknowledged that more instead of repeating this boring take that misses the whole point of the story every other day.
