if any of these little tips helped u at all and you'd like to support my endeavors to draw more bears, consider throwing some change at me, a trans artist struggling financially this holiday season <3
if you're stuck on a chapter there are a few reasons:
-your set up to the scene you're writing is not working. go back and check it
-you are not in the right POV. think about who would be the most interesting or the most entertaining or the most informative in that scene, depending on what impact you want the scene to have
-you're at the beginning of the chapter and the words aren't coming to you even though you have it planned out already? the solution is simple: you don't like what you have planned out as much as you think you do. do not force it
-solution to a lot of problems comes from a single question I ask myself: Do I choose the kind option, or the mean option? (Your readers will eat up either one)
-You find the dialogue lacking? Act it out
-Your scene feels boring or something just "ain't right" but you can't tell what it is? Try making yourself feel the emotion you want your readers to feel. If you didn't cry while writing a scene meant to make your readers bawl their eyes out, then you might not have connected to your character as well as you wanted to. Put yourself in their shoes, pretend you ARE them.
(And afterwards, please practice putting yourself back in your own shoes and taking care of your mental health. Sometimes the fucked up stuff might get to you. Healthy minds create healthy lives, and in turn, you get to keep creating.)
-Your environment might be bothering you. Take a look around you and see what's nagging you. Is your workspace not clean? Are your notes out of order? A clean/orderly workspace can help you organize your thoughts or get you into a more productive mood. (Trust me, I get it, sometimes it's really hard to keep it tidy.)
-Try white/brown/pink noise. Try listening to music, or to videos that create background noise you feel most productive with.
-Jumping jacks. Squats. Stretches. Wiggle around your room. That one scene in High School Musical where Sharpay and Ryan are warming up. It sounds ridiculous, but this is good for you, your body, and your mind. Release pent up energy, get yourself awake and focused. If you aren't able to do this, try something silly to wake your brain up. Do some puzzles, sing some songs, etc.
-Most importantly:
Did you do your laundry? Did you get enough sun? Did you drink enough water? Did you eat enough today? Did you get your favorite snack? Did you smile? Did you run in your yard like you did as a kid? Did you laugh with your friend? Did you see the way their eyes crinkle when they smile at you? Did you play with your dog? Your cat? Did you look at the flowers in the field near your house? Did you meet someone new? Did you learn something you didn't before? Did you try something you were scared of? Did it go well? Did you enjoy being yourself? Did you explore the world today? Did you live? Did you love? Did you feel? Did you breathe, and relax, and feel that everything is gonna be okay?
It might seem insignificant, but we write from the heart, not just the mind. Let your story sit in the back of your mind when you truly feel stuck. Take care of yourself, try getting out of your head. Notice the details around you, commit them to memory. Your story will wait for you. It might take a day, or days, or a week, or a month, months, or a year or years. But the story sits with you and you'll be thinking about it without actually thinking about it. When you come to your story again, it will be happy that you've grown, no matter how big or small
imo the best way to interpret those āreal people donāt do xā writing advice posts is āmost people donāt do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.ā human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we canāt make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.
for example, most people donāt address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.
[ID: The āDelicious. Finally, some good fucking food,ā meme of Gordon Ramsay in an episode of Hellās Kitchen. Itās been edited to say: āDelicious. Finally, some good fucking writing advice.ā /End ID]

Back from my birthday hiatus, and um, wow... was not expecting this kind of overwhelmingly positive reaction to a simple QRT about how we used Dissolve Mode in our BG paintings on Carol and the End of the World (see last image) - since people seemed to have enjoyed that so much, I thought I'd put all the pages of the Carol and the End of the World BG Paint style guide I drafted in one post! TBH I'd been meaning to do this for awhile but kept forgetting since I have it in a different folder than the BG paintings themselves... I believe all the paintings are mine and all the designs are by Alex Myung unless otherwise noted. I wrote this pretty early on pre-vis, so some of these guidelines got a little massaged during production, but the broad strokes are definitely still there! This wasn't the only style guide on the show BTW! A couple of our other leads Alex Myung and Kal Athannassov also put together a BG and Character Design style guide that are super cool - unfortunately I don't have the files myself (nor would I feel comfortable posting work that's not mine) nor do I think they've posted them yet, so if you two were looking for a sign to do so, this is it!! Now you have everything you need to paint like a Caroler - thanks for looking!! Showrunner: @dan-guterman Art direction: @ellemichalka
I believe part of being an artist means you never stop improving. For one reason or another, a lot of artists are afraid to paint dark complexions or Black characters. Sometimes deeming the idea too complex or difficult and theyād rather focus on lighter skin tones. If you truly want to get better on skin tones, improvement will come when you keep drawing diverse figures.
Heres few tutorials I like that might be of some help! :
- Dont be afraid of Dark Skin by Ririarts. (I visit this one most frequently)
- How to Render Dark Skin by jordynl33
- Oil painting process by Ellie Mandy Art
Older but honorable mention from Sinix: Painting Dark Skin Tones and Anatomy: Skin
I hope these tutorials help, if anyone has any youtube videos they like feel free to share as well iād love to see! And remember that practice makes improvement.
This is great for most people. But because the video says "everyone" without acknowledging that there are exceptions, I want to add a heads up for folks like me who have connective tissue / hypermobility disorders such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and probably other conditions as well: BE CAREFUL. Your body won't tell you when you are overstretching, and you can very easily hurt yourself doing things like the stretches shown in this video.
I know this because I learned the hard way and had to deal with the consequences.
If I hang from a bar like that, I injure both my shoulders. Every time. It takes a week or more to recover and it hurts like hell the whole time.
If I put my weight on my hands in a push-up position, I injure both my wrists. Every time.
If I do these stretches for my hips, I will pull them too far and injure them. Every time.
I stubbornly followed videos like this for years without realizing that it's not supposed to hurt. I thought I was getting stronger, building up tolerance, that it would take time for it to be easy. I thought I just had to "tough it out." My muscles were and are tight, so I thought I needed stretches like this.
It turns out my muscles are tight because they're trying like hell to hold my joints in place. It's called the "stiff" phase or type of hEDS and I had no idea it was possible until I finally got a diagnosis and the geneticist explained it to me.
Even if you don't have a history of dislocating joints, if doing stretches or exercises like the ones in this video are painful or lead to pain if you do them regularly, STOP DOING THEM and talk to your doctor immediately. You probably have an undiagnosed condition.
It is not supposed to hurt! At worst, there should be mild discomfort in the muscles as they gradually loosen. But it should never cause sharp pains, and especially not joint pain.
Stretching is supposed to feel good. If it doesn't, stop.
And I know not everyone has access to proper medical care, so if you really have no options for seeing a doctor or getting help with this kind of condition, you can try YouTube channels specifically for hypermobility, such as Chimera Health. Just be very careful, keep in mind that not everything you see online will be accurate, and never keep doing a stretch or exercise that is hurting you, unless you have received specific instructions from a real life medical professional to the contrary.

I ripped a ton of CDs I bought at an estate sale using Windows Media Player on Windows 11 back in September, so I wanted to look into this. Turns out Microsoft shut down the server that retrieves music metadata sometime in early December.
Starting yesterday morning (Dec 15 2025), Windows Media Player Legacy cannot find media info for CDs I am ripping. WPM displays unknown alb
Note that it will still play and rip CDs just fine, but they will only show up as "Unknown Album." If you want to rip CDs, you will need third party software. fre:ac has been good in my experience

night/day mode: optional, can be turned it on and off by toggling the option in the customisation panel. it is activated by clicking the moon icon on the bottom right corner.
tabs: all are optional, and can be toggled on and off.
sidebar buttons: if you don't have asks enabled, the ask button will not appear. all 3 custom links are optional, and will not appear if no link is provided in the customisation panel.
search bar (with entries): optional, and so are the tag suggestions. you can have up to five; if you know a bit about coding, you can add more by making some tweaks.
custom title: while there is no official limit, i would not recommend making it too long, especially while using a big title font size. optional.
custom description: you can add basic html to it. optional.
custom sidebar image: max width is 300px, but you can upload smaller images without problem. if no sidebar image is provided, the code will default to the user icon.
tags on click: tags are hidden until the tag button is clicked.
scroll to top: what it says on the tin. optional.

featured posts: optional. 3 featured posts at once. they are defined by the last 3 posts tagged with a certain tag (of your choice). they don't have to necessarily be original posts, or image posts/gifsets. all types of posts can be featured in the featured posts box.
mobile friendly: it has its own version for smaller screens like mini desktop screens, cellphone and tablets.
highly customisable: everything can either be tweaked or turned it off, all without any coding required (everything can be done in the customisation panel). the only obligatory elements are the sidebar, the ask button icon (if ask is enabled), the posts container, pagination and credits (that i ask for you not to remove).
a reminder: the Tumblr customisation panel is buggy, so you might have to toggle on and off some elements you want/do not want to make it work. i also recommend you "reset" your custom theme before installing this one (ie, select the default Tumblr theme), so no preferences of your previous theme are inherited by this code. it's not a necessary step, but it helps when customising.
again, let me know if anything happens. thanks for using and liking the theme! š
I've been using this tool called tumblr-utils to back up my tumblr blogs. it creates a locally navigatable archive of a given tumblr url's posts, which is more convenient than the post soup you get from tumblr's native blog export feature.
what that means is that I have a folder on my computer with the name of my url with an index.html file in it, and when i click on that file to open it in a browser I get a simple page with a list of years and months. selecting a specific month will send me to a list of the posts i made or reblogged in that month, similar to tumblr's own archive page. the contents of the post including images are stored locally on your machine.
It can also make a separate index file that organises posts by tag, which is great if you're a consistent tagger, but it will list every single tag you've ever used so it can take a while to find the tag you're looking for in the list if you're a habitual tag commentator. generating the tag archive also takes a while depending on how many posts have to be processed.
you can make it back up any blog as long as it's not set to private. I have backups of both my main and sideblogs and it keeps them in separate folders.
it's had some trouble going all the way back to the start of my main blog in 2012 just by sheer volume of posts, but by making it fetch posts from one month at a time I've been able to go back to 2015 (that's tens of thousands of posts), which was good enough for my purposes.
it might be a little scary to use if you've never touched the command line before, but there's both text and video instructions to set it up and using it is just a matter of typing the command and letting it do its thing in the background.
