Tomatoes are emblematic of the decline. Back in the 1930s, a variety known as the Rutgers tomato reigned supreme across the US, accounting for over 60% of all commercially grown tomatoes thanks to its reputation for “high flavor that explodes in your mouth”, according to Tom Orton, a professor at Rutgers University.
But as mechanical harvesting dawned in the 1960s, the Rutgers tomato was swept away by tomatoes that ripened simultaneously and uniformly inside thick skins. They could withstand the rough and tumble of modern farming. [...] These days, food companies pick tomatoes while they are still hard and green to ensure maximum freshness, transporting them in ethylene-filled bags to ripen along the way[...]
If you’re used to eating industrially produced food held in the cold for several weeks while it makes its way to a local supermarket, then you are unlikely to expect your tomatoes to burst with rich umami or a butternut squash to be sweet and custardy.
Harry Klee recalls a taste test many years ago in which one student picked out a supermarket variety as her favourite, despite being offered some of the tastiest tomatoes the team could get their hands on. Asked why, she replied: “It tastes like the one my mom buys.” Klee was dismayed. “We have to convince people there is good stuff out there,” he says.
For some reason it's not addressed in this article, but the polyphenols and phytonutrients which give fruit and vegetables flavor are also extremely good for people. (They fight cancer). So the better vegetables taste, not only will you eat more of them, but each individual vegetable is better for you!
Vegetables grown on compost rather than commercial fertilizers also have higher vitamin levels than their industrialized counterparts, so it's a win-win all the way around. Everybody should see if their area has a CSA they can subscribe to! ( And that way you support local business and cut down on fossil fuel use as well)
The third plate is a good book on the topic, but another to read is What Your Food Eats. It goes into the science of soil health in a very approachable way and introduces readers to a lot of the heavy hitters in the regenerative farm movement

It would be cliche of me at this point to say that a lot of "irrational, reactionary" anti-tech and anti-AI sentiment is not in fact irrational, but the direct result of "AI for everything" making ordinary peoples' lives objectively worse, in measurable ways, ways that did not and could not exist 20 years ago, so that some soulless parasite's stock portfolio can ride the bubble a little longer. But if you or someone you know doesn't understand why sentiment has turned so sharply against Big Tech, why everything they say is assumed to be a scam or a waste of time by so many people, this article is a good start.
Google is infamous for exactly this type of product churn and exactly this type of support incompetence. In the tech world, dependence on any Google product is treated (formerly half-jokingly) as a material business risk. Google is a badly mismanaged company kept afloat by an increasingly outdated ad monopoly supported by monopolies on the Yellow Pages, AOL keywords, email, and public-access TV; any product line outside the monopolies that drive the ad monopoly is not only not a strategic priority but so insignificant that it's best treated as a waste product of internal politics – former Google employees have described the management culture as "engineers get promoted for launching new products and managers get promoted for killing old products."
