the recent trend to hate on argentina and to characterize doing so as woke has allowed many first worlders to show their true colors. as soon as you all seem to get the 'green light' that hating on a third world country is acceptable you stop hiding your disdain and xenophobia. this and the "calling ice" jokes show you don't actually give two shits about racism or cheating or whatever, you just want a socially acceptable way to hate on latin americans
Without risking having to hand over my woke card, I think the Argentine right's obsession with the Falklands and the banner incident at the end of the match are pathetic displays of fascism and the symptom of capitalism failing in Argentina. This does not mean we should wish ill on them. This does not mean we should bring out the old banners from 1982. "Hurhur we ought to let them have another crack at the islands, see if we can't beat them again! Send us another Belgrano!" Fuck off. Another Falklands war would be bad for The UK, Argentina and the Falklands. Everybody loses.
first off who the fuck asked this post never mentions the Malvinas. this post is about first worlders feeling comfortable talking like this about third world countries cause a twitter thread told them it was okay
the Malvinas aren't an "argentina's right's obsession", over 300 young men and dare I say kids died on that war fuck you
"the banner incident" why is a fuck you to british imperialism (which, no, wasn't against the rules because the match had already ended) treated like a display of fascism??? do you know what words mean???
hand over your woke card if this is how you treat a latin american country standing up against imperialism
actually fucking crazy how many usamericans and europeans ive been seeing hating on latam since this world cup started. i have literally cut ties with people i previously considered friends because of this racist bullshit.
say it with me folks: its! still! racist! to! send! threats! to! argentina! even! if! its! trendy! now!
if youre saying shit like youre glad that theres children starving, youre actually just a cunt. im legitimately embarrassed to be english because this racism is blatant and disgusting. im actually tired of being quiet on this now. yall are hurting some of the people i consider my dearest friends for the crime of existing and its bullshit. im gonna speak up every fucking time and if you feel the need to say shit about argentinians, or any latam countries for that matter, your ass is getting blocked and reported
I deleted my original post on this because it was hasty and ignorant and centred the west, but I continue to receive anon hate about it so I'm going to make the mistake of re-adressing it.
I do not think that the Falklands/Malvinas are inherently British, I do not believe the British empire has a right to them or to any other land. I support any movements within the islands for independence as I support any movement for independence from Britain, anywhere in the world.
My perception that the idea of Argentina claiming the islands comes from the Argentine right was informed by Milei's claim that he was setting out a roadmap to reclaim the islands for Argentina, and for the fact that it is widely perceived that Galtieri engaged in the Falklands war in order to get nationalistic feelings inflamed and maintain power. I saw reflected in this the same instinct that imperialist powers are acting on when they start unnecessary forever wars to bolster their own power.
There is a lot of discussion about the islands that happens in this country that I find tasteless and imperialist and that is what I was trying to highlight. I was trying to add on that as well as the cruel jokes circulating about people starving in Argentina that OP referenced, I had seen a rise in rhetoric here in the UK that referenced the war- the Battle of Goose Green and the sinking of the Belgrano in particular- and glorified the conflict and the deaths of Argentinians, and that I thought that was reprehensible.
I think that the sinking of the General Belgrano, outside of the exclusion zone which Britain had defined, was wrong. I think to celebrate the deaths of anybody involved in the conflict is wrong.
I am unaware, and remain unaware, which I am about to embark on remedying, of the general feelings towards the islands by everyday people in Argentina.
I think that in an ideal world, there would be free trade and transit between the islands and Argentina as there is between the islands and Britain. I think that nationalist ideas get in the way of developing a situation for the islands that benefits the Falkland Islanders and benefits Argentina by allowing commerce between the two. I think that the way the borders of the Falklands affect the fishing industry in Argentina is bad and should be remedied.
I do not think, however, that a solution for the colonial occupation of the islands can be found in the annexation of the islands by any other power.
I sincerely apologise for any ignorance portrayed in my initial posts, and would genuinely be delighted to hear from anyone who had a perspective, resources, or information to share with me that isn't anon hate, especially Marxist analysis.
when a territory is illegally occupied by a colonial power, the feelings and benefit of the people occupying said territory should be the last in the list of concerns when discussing reparations. the current settlers in the islands (let's call them "islanders" for short) are not neutral agents in this situation, they're actively working with britain to ensure the stolen territory is never given back to the country it belongs to. Argentina isn't a "power" that can annexate the malvinas, it's a country formed on a suboceanic platform the malvinas are also part of. Retrieving the islands isn't annexation, and simply "allowing trade" and commerce between Argentina and the islands doesn't solve the issue of a colonial illegal occupation in them. The malvinas have been a place that has had too many ecocides carried by the british empire in lieu of their economic benefit. It happened when half the fauna in the islands was anhillilated to allow for sheep herding from the settlers, and it is now when they're trying to turn them into an oil extraction zone
