It’s incredible!

This stupid cake, made with potatoes … is delicious! It’s so sweet, moist, and decadent, just like a brownie! And I don’t even like chocolate or potatoes!

The recipe from the tiktok was pretty much impossible to find. I looked high and low, but everyone posted recipes that I KNOW he didn’t use because the ingredients and methods were different. After some searching, my grandma and I came up with our own recipe.

For the Cake:

1 cup mashed potato

2 cups sour cream

1 ¾ cup flour

1 ¾ cup sugar

¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

½ cup softened butter

2 eggs

1 ½ tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla

Pinch of salt

For the Drizzle:

4 oz semi-sweet chocolate

½ cup sugar

3 tbsp corn syrup

2 tbsp water

A lot of recipes called for a mixer or a processor, but my grandma and I wanted to make an every-man kind of recipe, since we know not everyone has those things. Plus they’re heavy and a pain to clean anyway, so bowls it is!

Instructions:

1. Peel and boil the potato, then mash it. Set aside to cool. Go to the bathroom, do your homework, then come back. That should be enough time.

2. Set oven to 350°F.

3. Cream butter. This means putting the sugar and butter into a bowl and mashing it together with a fork until it’s thoroughly mixed.

3. Put everything else in the same bowl, including the mashed potato. Mix and stir well. Work those muscles!

4. Grease a pan (doesn’t matter what kind you use) and spatula batter into pan. Even out if necessary.

5. Bake in oven for 40 minutes.

6. Test cake with pick. If nothing sticks, it’s finished. If batter does stick to pick, let it bake a bit longer but make sure it doesn’t burn. Remove and set aside to cool.

For the Drizzle:

1. Cut chocolate into tiny squares.

2. In a small pot, mix sugar, corn syrup, and water.

3. On medium heat, wait for mixture to sizzle and stir it. Do NOT let it boil.

4. Remove from element and add chocolate.

5. Wait for squares to melt, then mix.

6. Drizzle or pour over cake.

Chocolate Potato Cake

½ cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs ½ cup milk ½ cup hot riced potatoes [just pure potato, mashed, no milk or butter or pepper or salt or whatever, just pure mashed potato] 1 cup flour 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp clove ½ tsp nutmeg ½ cup grated chocolate ½ cup chopped nut meats [optional, never ever feel pressured to add nuts to your chocolate cake, our guy here didn’t!]

Just… put everything into the mixing bowl in that order, with lots of mixing in between each addition.

Into a greased and/or lined tin, and then into a moderate oven for 55 minutes (or until cooked).

Frosting

2 Tbs butter 1 cup sugar ¼ cup milk 1 square unsweetened chocolate ½ tsp vanilla [also optional, since again, not mentioned by our maker here!]

LMD (i am not sure how many chapters this will end up being. It’s something he’s been slowing heading towards since the second half of season 1. And it seems some people don’t realize how huge and rare it’s in the Joseon period for nobleman to be physically faithful to only one person. Seungho has become monogamous in an era when noblemen regularly had concubines, which was completely legal by the way, and fathered illegitimate children from servants and slaves while their wives had to remain morally pure.  Not even the queen had a faithful husband since the Joseon king used to have the biggest harem in the entire kingdom.

That being said, it was generally accepted that noblemen had mistresses and those who didn’t were said to be devoted and in love with their wives, that’s why the men assume that Seungho must have found a woman he wants to marry for him to abandon his promiscious ways. Noblemen were not faithful to their concubines or servant lovers who always came from lower caste than them and who were considered lowly and inferior to them.

Which is why it’s extra poignant to see Jihwa, the nobleman, being reduced to a mere mistress by the gossiping men while Nakyum, the commoner and servant, is being considered Seungho’s fiancée.

In the end, Nakyum is the person with who Seungho spends his days and nights in his home and when he leaves he only leaves with him. Futhermore, he is also the one who Seungho wraps in his clothes while he walks stark naked carrying Nayum around like a beloved bride. Not only is this behaviour out of ordinary for him, it’s out of ordinary for most noblemen. 

And that shows how special Nakyum is to Seungho who hasn’t treated his previous lovers and fuck buddies even with a fraction of the consideration and gentleness he bestows upon Nakyum. Even gossiping men comment on how special Nakyum must be to bewitch someone like Seungho. Because the truth is Seungho is ill suited to be considerate. The only time we saw him being considerate to someone other than Nakyum was when he didn’t kill Jihwa for old times’ sake after he abused the painter. 

Be it his “friends” and servant who’ve known his whole life or random people, everyone notices this immense change in Seungho’s behaviour. And you really have to appreciate how slow and gradual it has been.

The most heartbreaking thing is that Nakyum has been in love with a lie for so long that now, when he has the real thing, when Seungho genuinely adores him and gives him real warmth he can’t see it. Nakyum has never been in love with Inhun, only with an illusion of him he created in his mind and Inhun groomed and manipulated it for his own gain. So in that way NK is just like SH: not recognizing true love and fucking up because he’s never been in love or loved in return.    

THE SYMBOLISM! Seungho LOOKING UP at Nakyum with so much reverence and wonder! It almost feels like worship. Even the kiss looks like a gift from a deity to his devoted supplicant. The lover’s kiss SH has been craving for so long. The power dynamic between them has been completely reversed. All SH’s wealth, pedigree, power and superior strength mean absolutely nothing with Nakyum. It’s Nakyum who holds all the power and Seungho becomes absolutely helpless because he is the one who is needy for affection, powerless when faced with NK’s tears and vulnerable, with his heart held in the palm of NK’s hand. For this fleeting moment, it’s NK who is in charge because Seungho is left speechless, powerless and utterly bewitched and captivated by his little lover.

Seungho is blushing and it shows how out of control of himself and his own emotions he is. The cold and heartless Lord Yoon comes undone. He’s so deep that he’s passed the point of no return. There is no coming back for him: he will either win Nakyum’s heart or die trying!

BAEK NAKYUM HAS JUST CONFESSED HIS LOVE FOR YOON SEUNGHO! THIS IS A FREAKING LOVE CONFESSION .This is Nakyum being honest about his feelings. And this is why:

Nakyum is so young, innocent and inexperienced so not only he can’t recognize true love when it’s literally staring straight at his face, but he also can’t tell the difference between fucking and lovemaking. He’s always associated love with his platonic feelings of “pure love” for the untouchable Inhun who instilled in him that gay sex was dirty and amoral. Therefore NK doesn’t relate sex with love.

Moreover, his only sexual experience has been with SH and they have never had MERE SEX. Nakyum’s body and heart are falling in love with Seungho, but his mind can’t recognize and accept it.

He doesn’t even entertain the notion that he might be in love with Seungho because what he feels for him is so diametrically different from everything he feels for Inhun. Not long ago, he thought that his racing heart was the result of a medicine!

When Nakyum describes himself and Seungho as “just two naked bodies”, he is completely disregarding the physical aspect of love and its inseparable connection to emotions. By doing so, he also defines their relationship in his mind and puts a label on it: fuck buddies.

However, when Nakyum describes why he became so docile, he is being sincere. Every single word is the truth. He just doesn’t understand what those words mean or how they might sound to Seungho.

“When our eyes meet” = Eyes have absolutely nothing to do with sex or two bodies moving together. There is a deep connection between them and Nakyum instinctively feels it.    

“My heart starts racing” = I used to be surprised why Nakyum was so confused and shocked by his racing heart, until I realized it’s because he never experienced it before – INHUN HAS NEVER MADE HIS HEART RACE, ONLY SEUNGHO HAS MANAGED TO DO THAT. SEUNGHO, NOT INHUN, IS NAKYUM’S FIRST LOVE.

“Despite myself” =  he’s conflicted and confused by what he feels, his heart and body pull him toward Seungho but his mind is protesting.

“I think about you coming inside me” = he wants to be claimed by Seungho, he wants to feel more of his warmth.

“When you lick my body, bite me, kiss me,…” = he loves and enjoys everything Seungho does to him, every touch and caress. However, he mentions his kisses at the every end. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, it’s a latent defense mechanism to place less important information before the most correct one.

“I also feel good” = the “also” is important. It’s not only when Seungho touches him, it’s not only sex, which makes him feel good. It’s the way Seungho looks at him, it’s the way he makes his heart race. With Seungho, everything feels good.

Finally, this has been a huge lesson, and thus a step foward, for Seungho. He’s finally realized that he can’t win Nakyum’s heart and honesty with sex alone or force them. The truth is SH always needs to fuck up first before he learns his lesson. He needed to see NK’s bleeding face, flaccid cock and red eyes to realize that he doesn’t want to cause him pain. He needed to see NK’s weak, feverish body and to experience the guilt and helplessness to realize he doesn’t want to see NK suffering since it hurts his own heart.

When people criticize Painter of the Night, they only see the sex and violence, but fail to see that it’s a heartwrenching story about love across the social divide. It’s not the usual trope of rich boy falling for a poor boy the authors of yaoi genre often explore so much. This tale is about two people who stand at the opposite ends of the social strata. Their positions on it were assigned to them at birth and the society, the Joseon strict caste system, doesn’t give them any way to change them, nor does it give them any conventional ways to be together. Seungho is the closest thing to a prince while Nakyum is little better than a slave, even by the commoner standards he is considered lowly. And this gap between them hinders their communication and it takes a long time to bridge it. Because, in the end, it’s not only the society and its rigid rules that separate them, but also themselves: the people that society made them into.

Seungho has never had to explain himself to anyone, be it his feelings, actions or his motivations. He has never needed to woo anyone or make an effort because one word from him and he could have anyone and anything he ever wanted. His sense of entitlement, inherent pride and arrogance are the result of him being a nobleman in a society which strives on inequality, but he also possesses a very strong defence mechanism of never showing anyone his real feelings since they could be considered a weakness which he knows others would immediately exploit. That’s how he’s been his whole life, it’s how he’s been brought up and what he’s been taught, and it’s a behaviour the society expects from him and even encourages. However, it’s these things which cripple him in his courtship of Nakyum. Because it really is a courtship even if Seungho himself hasn’t realized it yet.

He wants something from Nakyum but doesn’t know how to get it and, perhaps, doesn’t even know what it is. First, Seungho wanted his body, for Nakyum to desire him and not Inhun. However, when he finally gets that very thing he suddenly realizes it is not enough. Nakyum’s compliance and apologies irritate, frustrate and trouble him. The notion that Nakyum should feel the need to apologize to him makes him feel as if something were missing. It’s reminiscent of the time when Nakyum called Inhun’s name during the first time they had sex, when he didn’t get hard when SH raped him in the pavilion,…  – it’s as if whatever Seungho wants from Nakyum were something elusive, always out of his reach.

The moment when Nakyum asks Seungho why he’s being so kind to him perfectly portrays this ambivalence: the way Seungo pauses, looks away and literally stalls and hesitates before he speaks, all things which are very unlike him. And even then, his answer is posed as a question with a question mark at the end of it – as if he were asking even himself what the reason is, showing his uncertainty and inability to respond to such a simple question. So he comes up with a sarcastic excuse which is his m.o. whenever he is angry, hurt or defensive – he attacks, says something rude and harsh. But even the excuse is a gesture of affection containing a hidden meaning: to make Nakyum eat so he doesn’t fall ill again. 

Therefore Seungho’s answer is a combination of his pride and self defence mechanism not to appear vulnerable, but also him not being completely sure what he feels for his lover. And it makes sense that he struggles so much with it because how is he supposed to recognize love when he’s never felt it before? On some deeply visceral level, he realizes he’s falling in love but his mind can’t fully accept it for what it is because his upbringing, social position and everything they bring with them hinder him,

On the other hand, Nakyum is so used to being marginalized and demeaned that he actually believes himself to be worthless because of his own social status of a lowborn commoner with no family. His reaction to Seungho’s answer is the direct result of it. He takes it at its face value because he has no reason to believe that anyone, much less the noble and mighty Yoon Seungho, could care about him and love him since no one ever did.

He resigned himself to the fact that his only worth to others is how he can be of use to them while his own feelings and desires are being completely ignored in the process. He is accustomed to such treatment, yet he still hopes for affection nonetheless. So when he hears Seungho’s answer, he accepts it with a resigned face. As if he were thinking: “Of course, you fool, he couldn’t have been kind to you because he cared about you. He only sees you as a body to fuck…” But the saddest thing is that because Nakyum never had anything, even so little, even these crumbs and scrapes of interest and affection are enough for him and he quickly starts to enthustistically eat, as if he didn’t want Seungho to be displeased and throw him away. Even if he might be only a warm body to fuck, Seungho still wants him and no one ever wanted him before. 

That’s why the last moment when the servant calls him a whore must feel like being stabbed by a knife because it’s voicing Nakyum’s deepest fears and insecurities -  that he is worthless.

Seungho really needs to learn how to open up and be more sincere about his feelings because that’s his way to Nakyum’s heart and, more importantly, because it’s what his painter needs in order to heal the countless festering scars he sustained from a lifetime of being treated and disregarded as being worthless.
