Iâm glad that, at least, in Emmerdaletour they remember that the lads are engaged.
Prison dynamics and Robertâs lost story
So Iâve fallen down a rabbit hole of reading articles, essays and statistics about âhusband and wifeâ prison dynamics and thereâs such a more interesting and powerful story that could have been told about Robert and Kev as opposed to what we got.
A prison wife is the inmate who takes on the more 'feminine' role in a prison relationship; they're often the submissive one, the 'takerâ. Protection and security from the 'husband' are commonly exchanged for sexual acts. Sound familiar? Kev was offering Robert protection in prison once the two of them began their relationship.
People who become prison wives are often the people who are more vulnerable in the prison environment. You know who was vulnerable? Robert, who was being attacked and beaten up constantly. Other people who become prison wives are those who are considered to be good looking or pretty. That sound familiar? Robert even referred to himself as pretty when talking about prison.
Robert could have been a prison wife with Kev playing the husband. It was basically written out for them already. Robert was married to a man who was protecting him from the other inmates who had constantly been inflicting mental and physical harm on him. Thatâs a fact. They were already half way there, they just needed to embrace what theyâd already been setting up (intentional or not).
Kev and Robertâs relationship could be known as a âprotective pairingâ. One article I read said protective pairings are âa form of prison rape in which men protect weaker inmates in exchange for sexâ. This again links to Robertâs potential as a prison wife but also acknowledges that what Robert was experiencing was a type of rape. The same article also says âinmates do not label a behaviour as rape or sexual violence unless 'those acts meet particular conditions set by inmate cultures constructions of rapeââ which would explain Robert not seeing it as abuse because it was more or less what was expected from him in this relationship with Kev.
Kev has also referred to Robert using female pronouns multiple times which I just think adds to this theoretical prison dynamic because it feminises Robert, exactly what a prison wife experiences. According to another essay I read the term âwyfieâ is also used to refer to a prison wife. I can actually imagine Kev saying this to Robert and it would have been a good indicator to their prison dynamic if they went in the coercive manipulator route.
Thereâs so many stories about men in prison who fall into the prison wife role just to be safe, it seems to be a lot more common than people think. And yet, I feel like itâs something that is joked about. You hear phrases like âbeing someoneâs bitchâ thrown around in regards to men in prison and, of course, the classic âdonât drop the soap!â which trivialises and makes light of sexual assault in prisons (especially menâs).
Soaps love doing issue based storylines, especially when they dip into never before done territory, and I feel like exploring this dynamic and life in prison through a very popular legacy character like Robert Sugden would make for much more powerful and informative storytelling than what we got.
There were moments pre-Kev that felt like they were hinting that Robert had been sexually assaulted in prison. There was his nightmare where he was whimpering âplease donâtâ, his reaction to Vic touching his leg when he was asleep, Joe calling Robert a lackey. It really felt like they were going in that direction and when we heard news about a prison husband I thought they were doing it.
We were robbed of something potentially so good.

Ryan Hawley deserves better than these hacks in charge. He would have been so good with a prison PTSD story. Fuck them for changing it for a guest character đđ«đ
Knowing now that they definitely were laying ground work to explore Robertâs trauma and it wasnât just a John plot device and then after all that build up they just decided to shelve it because they decided keeping the actor they hired to play his tormentor was more important to them.

what's so special about this one? do you really like him? is it more than that? do you love him?

Also they clearly continued to write Robert as if the story hadnât changed but then kept shifting Kev towards the comedy and then undermined it all in the end by not having the self stabbing come out and whitewashing all of his behavior so he could come back and look at clouds (and put people in comas with crowbars because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he doesnât know his own strength).
But Robert really seemed to be written according to the original version where Kev was this dangerous manipulator that he was scared of, that he thought was a bomb ready to go off that he had to manage. Meanwhile, they were making Kev into a cake baking, apron wearing, karaoke machine and so none of Robertâs feelings and reactions matched up.
And so all of us who care about Robert more than anything else and pay attention to everything he says and feels are all âbut he said he was scared of him and he said this and thatâ and everyone else is just like âbut he makes a great lemon drizzle and he has such great one liners!â
What an absolute mess.
(One that they could have mitigated with a redemption arc and actually using their plot points butâŠwho cares about things being coherent!?)

And speaking of Sophia Tolstoy, her diaries are just so depressing.Â
âI am to gratify his pleasure and nurse his child, I am a piece of household furniture, I am a woman. I try to suppress all human feelings. When the machine is working properly it heats the milk, knits a blanket, makes little requests and bustles about trying not to think [âŠ].â
She wrote this when she was 19, one year into her marriage to Leo and as she was pregnant with the first of his 13 children.
A few years later, when she was 25 or so:
âI am so often alone with my thoughts that the need to write in my diary comes quite naturally ⊠Now I am well again and not pregnantâit terrifies me how often I have been in that condition. He said that for him being young meant âI can achieve anythingâ. For me [âŠ] reason tells me that there is nothing I either want or can do beyond nursing, eating, drinking, sleeping, and loving and caring for my husband and babies, all of which I know is happiness of a kind, but why do I feel so woeful all the time, and weep as I did yesterday? I am writing this now with the pleasantly exciting sense that nobody will ever read it, so I can be quite frank with myself [âŠ].â
During her 12th pregnancy she wrote about taking scalding baths and jumping from high pieces of furniture to try and miscarry. And at one point while reading her husbandâs diary (which he told her to read) she found the sentence âThere is no such thing as love, only the physical need for intercourse and the practical need for a life companion.â In her own diary she wrote âThey ebb and flow like waves, these times when I realise how lonely I am and want only to cryâŠâ
A few years before her husbandâs death, she published a cycle of prose poems titled âGroansâ, under the pseudonym âA Tired Womanâ.
the most depressing quote from her diaries:
âI have served a genius for almost forty years. Hundreds of times I have felt my intellectual energy stir within me and all sorts of desires - a longing for education, a love of music and the arts⊠And time and again I have crushed and smothered these longings⊠Everyone asks, âBut why should a worthless woman like you need an intellectual or artistic life?â To this question I can only reply: âI donât know, but eternally suppressing it to serve a genius is a great misfortune.â
ââ-
Iâm sorry. This is a bunch of bullshit.
Horrible manipulator who forced Robert to marry him in prison toâŠslapstick funny man who bakes lemon drizzle and sings bad karaoke.
But sureâŠthe problem was that he was going to die.
And alsoâŠeverything that came out of Kevâs mouth was also a lie. Sir.
I want Ryan to win that award now more than ever. The way they robbed him.
the only good thing about that interview is that itâs proof that they did indeed do a 180 on his character that is barely narratively coherent and i am not just losing my mind.
we all saw it and we fucking knew it
ugh you know what? the way this revelation about the switch up proves that April & Dylanâs story and Bearâs story and Robertâs story WERE interlinked after all and that was why the show positioned the special episodes together.
how their abusers were manipulating them and isolating them and taking away their choices to control them and making them do things they wouldnât normally have done just to survive. because they âowedâ them, except the dEBT WAS NEVER REAL(!!!!)
Ray didnât kill that creep for April and April never âlostâ the drugs. Celia wasnât saving Bear out of the goodness of her own heart and asking for some unpaid labour as a favour. Kev didnât save Robertâs life by getting stabbed, or deserve to be recompensed with marriage and affection.
âŠ..fucksaaaaake!!!!!

the thing is. emmedale's worst sin is that they have destroyed and betrayed robron for nothing. if i'm honest
they let someone who knew nothing about robert dictate a whole storyline that shouldâve have been about robert
