a lot of people outside the US don't know this, but we actually used to have to trim the twin towers every couple years to keep them from getting too tall. I'm not sure when exactly this became a partisan issue, but when people campaigned for mayor one of the big focuses of their political platforms was always exactly how they planned to keep the towers from getting too big. sometimes this coincided with deals they'd made with specific manufacturers or contractors—if you knew somebody was running for mayor who had friends in the giant pairs of scissors manufacturing industry, you could bet money they were gonna run on a platform of cutting the towers shorter like they're hairs sticking out too far, stuff like that. there were a lot of superstitions about how short it was safe to trim them before they wouldn't grow back, too—I'd have to ask my mom but I'm pretty sure the shortest they ever got was like, two stories high back in 1992, and people got scared they'd just stop growing for a while.
