just listened to jacob’s interview on cbc’s q and hearing him talk about including that much sex as an act of defiance is really getting to me. like, he was actively pushing back against the public’s willingness to accept queerness only so long as they don’t have to face the physicality of it. and that’s the main criticism i hear when i talk to people about heated rivalry. i like the show, but did there need to be that many sex scenes? you can kiss, but don’t do it in front of me. your sexuality is palatable if it’s not sexual.

this reminds me so much of Pat Kalifa’s position as staked out in the introduction of Macho Sluts (1988). At the time of writing Pat identified as a lesbian, and was embroiled in the feminist sex wars. From the introduction:

“Our culture insists on sexual uniformity and does not acknowledge any neutral differences - only crimes, sins, diseases, and mistakes….Our desire learns to curb itself, and we come to depend on the strength of self-repression for our safety. We live in fear of being known, and such fear stifles the nascent erotic wish before the image of what is wished for can be fully formed.

….

“If you live in a society that wishes you didn't exist, anything you do to make yourself happy disrupts its attempts to wipe you out, or at the very least, make you invisible. Institutions that provide amusement always come under attack by puritans and fascists, partly because these people know they are pompous buffoons and easy targets for ridicule…There is no easier, faster way to transmit information or a system of values than by presenting it in a format that makes people laugh, dance, get turned on, or just feel good. What is it that they don't want you to hear?”

Writing about sex, and especially non-normative sex, is political! It is a way to occupy space in the public consciousness and resist erasure or assimilation. It really is that serious.
