It's funny how Percy's priority was Annabeth and Clarisse's was the fleece, but it was Percy who ended up confronting Luke for the fleece, and Clarisse who fought to protect Annabeth.
It's wonderful how the series establishes these dynamics and motivations within the team and allows them to reveal more about themselves than that.
Because yes, Percy would sacrifice the world if it meant saving someone he loves, but at the same time, he doesn't actively want the world to be destroyed, so when the opportunity presents itself to be a good person, to be a hero, but without putting the people he loves in danger, he seizes it.
Because yes, Clarisse is a camper trained to prioritize the success of her battles over the risks and, to some extent, the lives of those around her, but at the same time, she is loyal and cares about those who fight alongside her, so if she finds an opportunity to help an ally without sacrificing the success of the battle, she doesn't hesitate to come to their aid.
The choice to balance Percy and Clarisse's strengths and weaknesses was, for me, the highlight of this season in terms of character dynamics.
As much as I make fun of Percy for being down bad from day one what I really love is that he truly thinks this is regular friend behaviour. He’s unleashing his inner wattpad mafia boss for Annabeth, has her picture on his mirror, promises he’d burn down Olympus for her, seems offended there’s ‘another’ boyfriend and thinks it is purely platonic. And the best part is Percy is such a loverboy in all meanings of the world that that genuinely is understandable because he is simultaneously going to the sea of monsters for Grover, having Grover’s picture on his mirror, telling Grover he looks beautiful in a wedding dress, embracing Grover like the husband he presumed missing at sea and being so soulmated to his best friend that they dream together.
It's easy to focus of the percabeth of it all because this show is providing that for sure, but that's just the surface level stuff. What I'm really eating up is the development of Percy, Annabeth, and Luke's characters as you can see them all going down darker, more complicated paths. Like in these last two or three episodes we have gone from Percy being nonchalant about the prophecy, to being terrified that he is the weapon people fear him to be, to saying "fuck it" and embracing his fatal flaw if it means he can save his friend from dying. And his and Tyson's reunion?? These kids man, they are ACTORS.
And Annabeth seeing the good in Luke and wanting to believe he can be redeemed?? Luke having a mission and still risking it because he cares about Annabeth? Using his "recon" to check up on Annabeth and warn her to be careful? It's so good. Like yes he's working an angle. Percy is right. But he ALSO cares about her and that's still obvious.
I also like how good of a foil Luke is to Percy. I'm not surprised Percy is so unforgiving of Luke. Percy "My Fatal Flaw Is Loyalty" Jackson would literally rather die than betray a friend. So Luke betraying him and everyone else? I get why Percy is quick to dismiss Luke and not see the more complicated feelings brewing underneath like Annabeth can. As far as Percy is concerned, a friend wouldn't betray their loved ones, and so Luke is not a friend. Simple as that. Annabeth, though, she's known Luke for years, and she understands him quite a bit better than Percy does. No wonder Luke is such a sore topic between them. It's all so GOOD.
It's like the show found all of the interesting emotional beats from the books and brought them front and center.
walker you unbelievably talented brilliant genius. annabeth is lying on the ground, unconscious, on the other side of a boulder percy can in no way move. and all of his fears are becoming very real, very fast. that raw uncontrollable panic in his eyes is percy at his core. percy at his finest. percy choosing between saving olympus or saving annabeth. and that look of sheer determination in getting that fleece to annabeth even if it means risking burning down olympus in the process is literally burned on my eyelids because that is percy. that is percy jackson.

the way you could literally see percy coming to terms with his fatal flaw and the fact that he was actively about to let it influence him again...
like he Knows how stupid and dangerous he is actively being and he hates it but he also knows he cant not save someone he loves.
percy’s petty ass swiping away luke’s iris message to annabeth when she was in the middle of an important conversation that felt like it was getting somewhere because luke wasn’t immediately dismissing her…i know what you are
I see a lot of people saying that "If I had to choose between saving Olympus and saving you, Annabeth, I'd burn it all down" is too much, too soon for percabeth and they're ruining the slowburn, and I just want to push back on that a bit.
The thing is that as romantic as it might read to the audience, it's actually not at all about that for Percy. He follows it up by saying he feels the same about Grover. He's not making a romantic declaration in that moment, and I don't even think it occurs to him that it could sound like one. For him, it's all about how much he loves his friends and how he would choose them over anything, even Olympus, if it came down to it.
His fatal flaw.
Which, of course, Annabeth knows. She doesn't hear the romantic connotations in it either, she just hears how dangerous this makes him. She's not swooning over it, she's actually kind of horrified about it. She's doing a million mental calculations about how this is going to impact her efforts to try to save Olympus (and Percy).
It's kind of great, because yes, it's a fun percabeth moment for the audience, who can read the subtext and know that they end up together in the books. But the slowburn is preserved for the characters. To them, there was nothing romantic about it.
a gigantic round of applause for whoever in the writers room came up with the idea that there would be one little crack in the opening of the cave that’s the perfect size for little percy to be able to watch as his girl is dying and his number one op comes to take her 👏🏼🙂↕️🙏🏼 you’re work is greatly appreciated
