I just love that multiple people not only thought “the black one is a princess and those are her bodyguards” but also came to the conclusion “they’re also, obviously, samurai.”

I don’t think people truly understand the scope of the damage Sony is about to do to physical media. They literally invented the compact disc. They are the reason why Blu-ray as a format won the HD wars over HD-DVD. They have gargantuan influence over manufacturing disc-based media. If Sony as a company stops making physical media for their next gen gaming consoles, this is going to affect movies and music as well. If you buy CDs, DVDs, or Blu-rays, those are next on the chopping block.

Every so often I'm struck again by what an incredible job Whoopi Goldberg does playing Guinan. She was 33 when she first played her yet I have never once doubted that Guinan is a mysterious alien who is hundreds of years old. The effect even holds in screengrabs. How does someone manage to do that with their face.

I think it's both a shame that Goldberg largely gave up on acting and that Guinan feels completely underutilized in Trek.* On one hand it does save Guinan from being overexposed: there's no 'let's completely explain Guinan' because in an era before lore poising became endemic it was understood that you didn't need to know every single second of a character's life for them to be engaging; indeed, mystery can itself be a character trait. On the flip side, though, you just want more Guinan just hanging out and being a part of things because she's so much fun. It doesn't have to be a Guinan episode, just let Guinan bring a snack tray up to the bridge to the sucker on night shift, or cater the diplomatic reception, or visit Deep Space Nine to challenge Morn, the Nagus, and a Renegade Prophet in a high-stakes poker game for the fate of Bajor VIII, trading cocktail recipes with Quark, fixing O'Brian's love life, and telling embarrassing stories about Worf. Goldberg is a fantastic actress, can do comedy and drama, and we should have had more of her. (She even gets one of the only good scenes in Star Trek Generations. Do you know how hard it is to have a good scene in Star Trke Generations?) *Let's just ignore ST Picard's fumbling 'young Guinan even though that doesn't make sense' because like so much else in Kurtzman Trek its dumb and doesn't get why the original worked but not in an interesting way worth talking about, because franchise zombism is all about empty signifiers that are just there so they can be The Thing You Know From Before and that's the beginning and end of the creative process of their inclusion)
