Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you donβt like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lolΒ
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and weβd really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of βnoβ and βOTPβ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one personβs kink may be another personβs squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And Thatβs Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Donβt Like, Donβt Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A βlive and let liveβ philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesnβt want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creatorβs.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individualβs personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what theyβre designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanloreβs relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort
the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.
there's not a single example I could give that's better than this
A cannon event for me is hearing a rich Upper East Side lady talk about how she had "a right to feel safe" when she was arguing for the removal of homeless people from her neighborhood.
the number of people who think that they have some kind of right to not have to see unhoused people while doing absolutely nothing to help get those people housed (and frequently voting against any kind of measure to do exactly that) is astonishing, yeah.
honestly i think the reason why itβs so common for kids to have the βitβs not a phase, momβ argument in their adolescence is less because they genuinely plan for their current state of being to remain utterly unchanged forever and more because theyβre tired of having their interests/self expression/beliefs/etc dismissed as foolish due to being probably temporary
i know that when i was that age i certainly wasnβt thinking about whether or not iβd be into whatever shit i was into then when i was 80, all i knew was that i was sick of feeling like the adults in my life were just rolling their eyes and waiting out everything that was important to me at that moment
I think another key thing conveyed by "it's not a phase" is that you won't return to being what they expect. Not necessarily that you're going to be This exact way forever, but that the next thing after STILL isn't gonna be the mold they're trying to put you in.
Whether or not being goth or w/e is a phase, *being your own person with your own priorities and interests* is NOT a phase, and that's what really rankles for people to not get.

So uhβ¦.some dude apparently recreated Adobe Photoshop feature-for-feature, for FREE, and it runs in your browser.
Anyway, fuck Adobe, and enjoy!
Give credit to the 30-year-old who worked on this for free and offers this service for free!
WHAT?!
I study graphic design and my tutor recommended and used this in his classes at art college last year, itβs so good it has SO many features for free, I really recommend it, even if youβre just trying to learn the basics of PS, such a wonderful thing <3
I use this and itβs fucken great. No bullshit. Really works. Sometimes the world is kind.
This is some Scooby Doo shit XD

if you arenβt sure how to count steps, i would consider a change of product or using the product for a different purpose a step (so concealer could be one step but if you put it on your eyelids later as a primer or cut crease thatβs another!) for me i would count my steps as 1. primer 2. concealer 3. setting spray 4. lips 5. eyeliner 6. mascara/lashes for reference

me, reaching into my dresser drawer for black pants: I hope this isnβt the pair with big holes worn in the inner thighs
Marie Kondo, gently over my shoulder: why is a pair of pants you find unwearable still in your dresser drawer
me: oh shit thatβs right!! The dresser is for clothes that under some circumstance I might conceivably wear!!
Marie Kondo, beaming proudly: Yes, thatβs correct!! These pants must have been your favorites. How wonderful that they were so comfortable and practical that you wore them out. But now since they no longer function as pants, you should move them from the drawer where you keep your functioning pants!
me: Yes thanks I got it theyβre in the fabric basket now
Marie Kondo, fading back into the darkness: I love what youβve done with the kitchen!!
The notion of KonMari as some creepy semi-embodied but entirely benevolent spirit, like a well-intentioned Bloody Mary, is so perfect and wonderful.

One day I'm gonna get old enough where people think I am so out of touch because of my age. Not knowing that at no point in my life did I ever know what the current popular thing was and have always been clueless.
Getting down on my knees and thanking the humans who invented dishwashers and washing machines.
InsNe that dishwashers are more efficient and easier than just washing them manually but they also use less water. Itβs a win win situation
They ALSO sterilize dishes, due to operating at a far higher temperature than human hands could ever tolerate. It's a win every way.
Made this post about 15 minutes after the repair guy who fixed the pump on my dishwasher packed up his tools and left, as the dishwasher was whirring along doing my dishes from that morning.
He said the exact same thing, which I did not know before that, so spreading this knowledge.

It can be easy to confuse the two, but you don't actually "wish you were more disabled", you wish your disability was taken seriously and was properly accommodated and that you had access to the support and resources you need - and that desire is so valid. You deserve more. But the sad truth is that no level of disability actually guarantees a sufficient level of support. So you have to work to separate your very understandable desire for more support from the incorrect assumption that other disabled people are consistently receiving what you aren't. All of us are getting fucked over in this society, and no group of disabled people actually has it easy.
You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.
By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.
I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?
it's probably from assholes making asks a minefield of trolling/harassment for years with no real blocking ability, which turned people off from allowing asks on their blogs so as a whole the site moved away from it
but now that we do have better blocking, we should try to revive it.
Reblog if your ask box is open.
