on this TOS rewatch i'm giving a lot of thought to the way Uhura and Spock's jobs on the bridge complement each other. whatever the Enterprise encounters, Kirk immediately turns to them like they're the two senses of the starship. if Spock picks up people Uhura hails them, if she can't establish a connection he assesses their condition. if it's a natural phenomenon Spock analyzes it and Uhura reports it to Starfleet. if they get hit Spock relays the ship damage and Uhura relays the casualties. when they arrive at a colonised planet Uhura contacts its authorities on the captain's behalf and Spock provides him with information on its history.
Science Officer and Communications Officer... Nature Guy and People Lady. Uhura is a romantic who loves poetry and music and human expression, Spock is a follower of Surak who seeks logic and objectivity and concrete data. Spock plays a regularly tuned instrument, Uhura invents the lyrics on the fly. hmmm...
The actual triumvirate of the bridge tbh
And the two people mentioned both times that Kirk records his posthumous highest commendations under the belief they all will or might die—
"Space Seed":
KIRK [recording a log while suffocating]: Stardate 3142.8. They have my ship, discarding their own worthless vessel. Only moments of air left on the bridge now. Commendations recommended for Lieutenant Uhura, Technicians First Class Thule and Harrison, Lieutenant Spinelli and, of course, Mr. Spock. I take full responsibility. I take full... [he faints]
"The Immunity Syndrome":
KIRK: We have arrived at the chromosome body in the nucleus of the organism. If we should fail in our attempt to destroy it, or be unable to free ourselves, I wish to record my recommendations for the following personnel, that they receive special citation. Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott, officers Chekov, Kyle, Uhura, and my highest commendation for Commander Spock, science officer, who gave his life in the performance of his duty.
The amount of people my age who think Luigi did more to get better healthcare then Obama explains everything wrong with populist politics
..... D... D...... Do they not know how fucking ground shaking the ACA was???????
I think everyone just forgot how much worse it was beforehand. The electorate has goldfish memories
That's kind of the big issue. Like, if Romney hadn't run a SPECTACULARLY bad campaign, sometimes I'm not sure Obama would have been a two term president, even when he and Joe spent most of the 2012 election pointing out it was GOP policies that had gotten our economy into the mess it was then still in, Obama has the most charisma of any politician within twenty years of his age in both directions, tons of young voters only had healthcare because of the ACA in that moment, and Obama "got bin Laden" shortly before the election. The GOP was STILL viewed as the party that was better for the economy and knew more about it by the bulk of Americans.
It has taken well over a YEAR STRAIGHT of Trump and his policies TANKING the good economy Biden handed him to even SLIGHTLY shake the general US public perception that the GOP is better at managing the economy than Democrats are. Despite ALLLLLLL the massive evidence showing that Dems are way better a job creation, budgeting, regulation, inflation, avoiding corruption, and so on. You know, all the charts routinely posted showing job creation under Dem vs. GOP admins, convictions of major officials under Dem vs. GOP admins, wage growth under Dems vs. GOP admins, and so on. All those facts have never made it through before.
Democrats MAYBE being better at managing the economy than Republicans is now a VERY NEW and VERY NARROWLY held idea by the USA at large. This is a fragile thing that obviously the GOP is looking for any sledgehammer to swing at (this is another reason they are yelling "communism!" beyond general red scare stuff, communist nations typically failed economically in a spectacular manner). Democrats MAYBE being trusted with taxpayer dollars and MAYBE being good at making the economy work for everyone is JUUUUUST starting to take root in peoples' minds. Which means it is very fragile as a notion and any major Dem publicly fucking it up (say a mayor or a major city, a big name senate candidate, or a Dem governor) will probably kill it dead for like another ten years.
Let's see how we do.
Couple highlights, for those not old enough or who didn’t have experience enough to remember, or who live in the majority of other countries on earth civilized enough to connect the dots that a sick and injured populace is more expensive than healthcare: health insurance used to just not have to cover much, certainly not the current standard of preventative care, so lots of people couldn’t access even very basic screenings, birth control could cost more than a day’s wages each month, they could cap your annual or your contract benefit costs meaning your treatment for cancer or car accident could just cost too much and they’d kick you off any continued payout from your insurance, and preexisting conditions wouldn’t be obligated covered so you’d not be able to get insurance again without paying an impossible extra amount for it. Or just not at all.
Whatever you think of any individual politicians, the ACA (for all that it was sabotaged in its partial implementation) was a revolution for access to basic services via insurance. We need a whole lot more, but so many people are alive today - even comparatively healthy - who wouldn’t have been. People still have limbs and organs and lives.
We need to be able to separate these policies from whether we even like the people writing them and simply be serious, and maybe more curious, about the consequences of law, and normalize that. The idea that we can just wait for someone to show up who we actually like to pay attention and engage during not just elections but public comment periods and judicial participation is leaving the literal power of life and death, for us domestically and for innocent people abroad and for the biosphere, in the hands of the worst humans alive. Turnout alone would have had us in a very different 2026 reality.
Ok so your post about the emergency alert reminded me of something VERY FUNNY about it which is that a) my parents also live where there's currently lots of fire, we could see it from the party they threw at the weekend and b) they live in Wales, and so had a slightly different experience of the alert.
Now, the thing about Wales is that *by law* all official government communication must be bilingual. Which means that in Wales, everyone got 2 alerts: one in welsh, and one in english.
Unfortunately, by law the welsh must happen *first*, and so the whole of wales got the fire alert in Welsh: A language that approximately 5% of the population speak well enough to actually understand what was going on.
So imagine, the emergency alert noise goes off. You open your phone. And the most *incomprehensible* collection of letters appear to you. You live in wales, so you know what Welsh looks like, but this is not the vocabulary that you usually see at the train station or on the letter from the council. And it's the emergency alert system. It's probably both Important and Urgent
So people all over Wales are using google lense or whatever to try and get a translations of this alert because this is clearly something Life Threatening. A frantic five minutes for the whole country.
And then the alert arrives in English.
Of course, now the joke is that this is how they force the Welsh Language on people: by making it clear that only Welsh Speakers will be saved from the atom bomb.
this is one of the funniest things i have Ever heard. as someone who grew up in cornwall, which desperately wants to be wales in terms of language and independence but simply doesnt have the push, imagining a universe in which i receive a kernow-only emergency text that is functionally meaningless to me but still sends the terrifying sirens off on your phone to make you think there's a bomb threat is kind of the premise of a horror movie . and that really is how they motivate u to revive a dead language
can we stop with this style of writing now please (:
be silly and shameless, i am begging you

Hold on wait I have another unsolicited opinion: the Odyssey's soundtrack is better than the movie itself.
Whatever the fuck is happening with that Shepard tone and that damn Albanian flute in the Troy track is terrifying. The twang of the bow being both diegetic and part of the soundtrack itself. Travis Scott and James Blake giving us a the eerie banger that is When I'm Home. That one leitmotif with the weird synths that plays whenever some utter carnage is happening. The drums in Laestrygonians sounding like massive footsteps, and then the vocalizations as the boats get wrecked. Agamemnon's leitmotif also having those giant footstep drums as he doth stride beside the narrow world like a Colossus, plus the way it overwhelms the listener in waves and echoes. The humming/harmonizing in the Hades track sounding like the wailing of the dead. The way Odysseus's theme just sounds like pure grief so much it makes you want to throw yourself off a cliff. With an aulos!
11 out of 10 excellent work Mr. Goransson no flaws no notes.

this is problematic of me (joke) but i really enjoy the splashing of french into english speech or writing. just adds a pizzazz
*adds a certain je ne sais quoi
see the problem is that despite around 8 years of french schooling the french language has utterly escaped my brain so even the most obvious set up i had created for myself by accident was missed by me. such is life.

god damn it

This is such a sweet oracle. If you love pink and purple, you will love this.
I don't care much for the combination of pink and purple aside from some specific contexts, but what I DO like is consistent, positive portrayals of fat bodies of various shapes!
The author says she wanted to create an oracle deck with fat ladies front and center, not just on the occasional card like in her other decks
You see I too often sat in school classes and thought “when am I ever going to need this, I’m never going to be an engineer, I’m never gonna be a scientist, I’m never gonna be a linguist” and then I grew up and it turns out a lot of bigots and cults and scams and grifts hinge their entire business model on you just. Not knowing what a protein is or some shit
If people knew what a fucking atom is and how molecules are defined, at least a quarter of all health related cults like movements and scams wouldn't work.
"Ohh it's a different sugar than refined sugar" it's the same molecule.
"Ohhh my water filtering apparatus making beauty water and cleaning water and alkaline water" Water is H20. What you're doing is reverse osmosis, and if it's alkaline then there is a substance that's not water in there to make it alkaline. You can't purify water to a pH of 12, because pure water molecules have, by definition of how the pH system works and several phyics rules, a pH of exactly 7.
"Ooohh it has ~different~ sodium atoms." That's called an isotope and sodium isotopes aren't created by magic woowoo, and the magical ability of most isotopes is radioactivity.
"Low toxin" what toxin. Tell me their names. What are they doing. "They are endocrine disruptors" what part of the endocrine system? How? Do you have a source that doesn't try to sell you something?
"Just mix vinegar and baking soda to cleanse all the toxins of your fruits" you just created water molecules and CO2, and some calcium and acetate which don't have much chemical property. That's a science fair vulcano. And doesn't have acidic or alkaline properties to chemically influence anything. Just use tap water at this point. "My wood cutting board soaked in an alkaline solution from baking soda to clear out the toxins leaves a nasty looking soup" yeah because you were dissolving the wood with an alkaline solution. Congratulations.
"There is effective microorganisms in this ceramic bead and it can cleanse your laundry and dishes and prevent mold in your fridge and it works for years" what microorganisms exactly? How did you discover them? What are they eating? Are they resistant to 60 degrees and steam? Do they procreate in the fridge? Are they spreading out on all surfaces to prevent the mold or is it an air filtration system that works without airflow or is it just magic? "Put them in your flowers, they can reverse cavities, put them in your walls" what are they eating in my walls? What kind of microorganisms are they? Did you test the safety of those things in human bodies? Are they native to my biotope? How do they survive in those fucking ceramic beads?
"Just use vinegar it's magic" it's a mild acid. Like, cool, sure, it works for several things, but it doesn't have magic properties. It's just a mild acid. Lemon juice is too. And once again, if you mix it with baking soda, they neutralise each other and you get water. Which cleans a lot of things but you dont need to do *all that* to get your hands on some plain water.
do not get me started on how bad people are about basic electrical principles, especially this abomination
warning : that link does psychic damage
Those bracelets that say they'll fix all your health problems using negative ions?
I always assumed they were a scam because ions (an atom with an electron imbalance) really really hate existing and are hard to make.
Lots of ions are ok in water because water is super polar (oxygen hogs all the electrons so every molecule is like a tiny magnet) and therefore they'll soak up all the imbalanced charges.
Go pour salt in water right now. If it dissolves you've created negative chlorine ions! (And an equal number of positive sodium ions)! Good job on being a scientist.
But in air? Nothing polar to stabilise them.
Go pour salt on your table. It stays a solid? Good job. You've proven the atoms in salt prefer being bonded to each other than being free flying ions. You're half way to a chemistry degree.
The only way to force the creation of ions in air is a fuckton of energy. This can be electricity or radiation.
Go attach leads to a 9V battery. Put both into a cup of water. If you see bubbles you've successfully split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen will be on the positive lead because oxygen ions are negative. The hydrogen will be on the negative clip because hydrogen ions are positive. There will also be more bubbles because water has twice as many hydrogen atoms as oxygen atoms. These bubbles won't be ions though, because again, ions hate existing so they recombine into oxygen and hydrogen gas almost instantly. Still. You did technically make negative ions for a split second. Good job.
But most of those negative ion bracelets don't have batteries (which again, only make ions for a split second and require a renewable resource like water to do that with). So they must be a scam right? They're just rocks!
Nope. Remember the other way to make ions? It was radiation! Those bracelets and necklaces you're supposed to wear 24/7 to keep yourself healthy? They're made of mildly radioactive stone.
So they are splitting the air into ions (for a split second. You now know that ions hate existing so they recombine. Although sometimes they'll recombine into ozone (O3) rather than breathable oxygen (O2). Ozone isn't great to breathe in but you also presumably have been near a car so like... It's not a big deal in the scheme of things).
But more importantly!! They're also splitting your body into ions! Which are stabilised by the water in your body (remember the magnet analogy?) and therefore last a lot longer and can get up to more fuckery.
To;dr the negative ion bracelets do what they say on the label. They just do it by dosing you with radiation. And unlike just walking past a radioactive rock or getting an x-ray or a particularly sunny day, they're doing it on a concentrated part of your body, for as long as you're wearing it. And you're supposed to give these to children!!!
#and if everyone was taught how to engage with and create art then we wouldn't have such an issue with ai slop now
#where people simply do not understand what the creative process entails so they devalue and dismiss it
#striving to be a well rounded person educated on as many things as possible is good actually
#and in this era of intellectual incuriosity being normalised it is absolutely crucial
I was homeschooled but for some high school classes I went to an accredited co-op, and one of these was high school AP Chemistry
So while I was taking this chemistry class I walked into a health food store one day and saw a bottle of "alkaline water"
Well I bought it and brought it into class the next day and asked the teacher if we could PH test it, since we were learning about acids and bases, and she loved the idea of IRL applied science so we took ten minutes to do a quick PH test on the alkaline water
Guys it was so fucking acidic. It had a PH rating of 4. Don't ever buy alkaline water it is such a massive scam. I don't even know what they did to it or how you get that to happen. That's the PH rating of wine
I saw a bottle of water in the store advertising that it had a "perfectly balanced pH." Well, yeah, duh. It's water. Its pH is 7. You didn't have to do anything all that special to make it that way. You're being asked to pay extra for a basic feature of water
