Youâre years too late to be recognizing the threat of US government mass surveillance, bud.
I donât have strong feelings about gen ed requirements in university, but university degrees in Europe donât really require you to take courses outside your specialty and I was always kinda relieved by that as a student. But European-style systems generally require you to specialize immediately: you get admitted to a *course of study*, and (at least when I went to university), switching courses isnât really a thing. Or at least it was very uncommon. Which I guess rewards knowing exactly what you want to do for your degree a bit?
That said the US higher education system has historically been very good, so theyâre clearly doing something right.
The biggest reason you need to cross-pollinate courses is that you end up with some glaring blind spots if you dont. "Those who separate poets and warriors have their thinking done by cowards and their fighting done by fools."
More specifically, engineers and finance bros need more rounded humanities courses, or else they'll be cheerfully optimizing for kill efficiency and blood extraction.
Conversely, arts majors need to be taking civics classes and economics so they aren't being shut out of the political system and ripped off because they can't budget.
Look what the universe got me for my 66th birthday!
I outlived yet another horrible person! That's so nice! I wasn't expecting anything!
Republican senator served in Senate since 2003 and was sharp Trump critic before becoming one of his most loyal backers
Rumor online is that he died of explosive diarrhea, which, plausible, is deadly to old people and circulating widely in his home state, thanks explicitly to disease surveillance that was cancelled by his beloved hero and strongman leader, Donald Trump. I hope it's true. It'll be nice if it turns out that the first known casualty was someone who enabled it.
I'm also seeing a lot of intense argument, especially on the left, about whether or not to point out, while we're cheering his death, that he spent almost his entirely life as a deeply closeted gay man who tried to protect his closeted identity by being as anti-gay as possible in public. At 66, I'm old enough to remember when Out magazine had to explain that they were adopting the policy that their one exception to their otherwise universal rule against involuntarily outing people was for closeted gay politicians and pastors who were either self-hating, or else pretending homophobia to defend their power in a way that hurt other gay people. I think that exception applies to Lindsey Graham.
His death won't make the world much better. The MAGA governor of his state will appoint another MAGA replacement for him. Their state will lose some Senate seniority, but they were going to do that anyway in a handful of months; Graham was planning on retiring even before he shit himself to death. Still, I lived long enough to celebrate the death of yet another awful person, I'll take that small win.
(I'm getting too old to wait until after the funeral to celebrate a monster's death. Can't count on surviving that long, myself. Remember kids: live your life so that good people don't celebrate your funeral, if only for the peace of the loved ones you leave behind.)

today's warm up: oh, to be a little frog in fresh spring rain
Years ago back when I worked in cubicle land, we were hiring junior software developers. They didnât have to have a ton of experience, just a willingness to learn, and some demonstration of their software skills. Like: show me a program you wrote (any language) or a web site you designed. Anything.
And there was this one guy I talked with who seemed super sharp, but had virtually zero experience writing software. When it came time to do the show-n-tell part of the interview he whips out his laptop, brings up a website, and spins it around to show me what he made.
A website of tiny ceramic frogs.
Not for sale. Just⌠all these ceramic frogs, organized into categories. Frogs on bicycles, frogs with hats, frogs sitting on lily pads. It was a virtual museum of ceramic frogs in web form.
I scrolled through his online collection of frogs, slightly baffled.
âThis is your website?â I asked finally.
âYep!â
âYou coded this yourself?â I popped into view-source mode and poked around some incredibly well-formatted, well-commented html. I nodded slowly. This guy was meticulous.
âYep!â
âSo⌠whereâd all the frogs come from?â
âI made those too,â he says, beaming.Â
And while Iâm processing this he rummages in his bag and pulls out a little ceramic frog working at a computer terminal. He places it on the table before us, next to the laptop.
âAnd THIS one,â he says, âI made for you! As a thank you for the interview.â
It was adorable. I hired him on the spot. I mean, why not? Worst case heâd wash out in 90 days and weâd hire somebody else. He turned out to be one of the best developers on our team.Â
And yes, his cubicle was loaded with ceramic frogs.
Conservative beauty standards are back with a vengeance which means it's especially important to go out this summer with bellies out and bodies unshaved. Also be unapologetically disabled with mobility aids and wearable medical devices and stim toys and ear defenders and all that stuff. You need it. People need to see it. Everyone needs to be reminded that life is unquestioningly more enjoyable when you're not living inside an arbitrary set of rules created by people who are offended by all the wrong things.
"less is more" is a lie perpetuated by big small to sell more less
oh my fucking god

unfortunately very true. Doing Better does not always mean never being upset or never being triggered or never having trouble. often Doing Better means experiencing those things and being able to keep going/cope healthily/move on. if youâre in a bubble with no sensation, if youâre numbing yourself out, thatâs not what recovering really is. it wonât help you have a happier life itâll just make your world smaller and smaller until you canât fit anywhere anymore. gotta learn to make peace with the hard stuff too, thatâs the only way to keep going
When I was training to be a battered womenâs advocate, my supervisor said something that really blew my mind:
âYou can always assume one thing about your clients; and that is that they are doing their best. Always assume everyone is doing their best. And if theyâre having a day where their best just isnât that great, or their best doesnât look like your best, you have to be okay with that.â
Any now whenever anyone in my life, either a friend or a client, frustrates me, disappoints me, or pisses me off, I just tell myself They are doing their best. Their best isnât that great today, but I have days where my best isnât that great either.Â
Op Iâd like to thank you for sharing this. Ever since the first time Iâve read it Iâve held it in my mind and it really has helped me to be kinder to others and to myself.
Thereâs a pretty famous Tweet that goes around from someoneâs therapist, who told her âYou canât do your best all the time. If you did, it would be your normal.â
ThatâŚyeah. Rewired me a little.
a lot of scares get like a second of reaction before the "oh -_-" moment but dude legit spent a solid ten seconds ready to be killed by a dragon

ok but this unironically works. talk about how the working class is exploited and you can basically sell full-on marxism to your average republican if you do it right. all you have to do is avoid the words "Marx," "capitalism," "socialism," "communism," "means of production," etc - just use synonyms. say "big business" or "corporate shareholder interests" instead of "capitalists." say "a government that prioritizes the needs of the working people" instead of "socialism." it WORKS. I've DONE it. the hardest sell are usually things like social and racial equity, welfare, things like that, because people have been primed with the racist/classist idea that those things are somehow unfair - but you can get your foot in the door to getting them to buy into those too if you start with class issues. read up on your theory, make sure you REALLY understand your own ideology, because that will enable you to reword it and successfully sell it.
