i love loooooooove the idea of people's reactions to the beetles getting back to earth. just imagine:
teenagers citing his videos and data as primary sources on their school projects (how do you make an mla citation for a home video filmed in space?)
grace's final goodbye to earth getting billions of views on youtube
sexy edits of grace ALL OVER tiktok and instagram
grace becomes a whole scientific field unto himself. teams of scientists dedicate their lives to the study of his research and his contributions. maybe some of those scientists were his students once upon a time.
grace x rocky ALL OVER ao3
books on eridian language and culture hit the shelves and sell out immediately
eridian culture reignites conversations about the construct of gender, eridians become nonbinary/agender symbols
space is suddenly back at the forefront of the public mind. space-travel units are introduced to grade school science curriculum worldwide. entire classes are taught solely on grace and his scientific discoveries. EVERYONE wants to be an astronaut
of course, hollywood makes a big-budget Dr. Ryland Grace biopic. it's a box office hit. a huge online movement results in ryan gosling playing grace, and everyone agrees the likeness is uncanny. stratt is the villain of the story.
a series of heartfelt videos from grace to stratt, in which he says hello and goodbye and i hate you and thank you and i miss you, are found in the database and reposted online. there's suddenly a massive outcry of support for her, which results in her release from prison. some youtuber makes a gritty but surprisingly touching short film about her story
people coming together to make earth better. trying to repair the damages from the sun's dimming, trying to repair the environment, trying to repair global relations. they want to be an earth worth saving, an earth that grace would be proud of
space travel becomes a huge global priority, the nations of the world pool resources and there are huge advances in technology (especially with scientists studying xenonite!)
the project hail mary launch date becomes a huge global holiday. there's a parade in almost every city all over the world in honor of the hail mary. people lay candles and flowers at memorials for yao, ilyukhina, annie, and dubois. murals of grace and rocky cover building sides. people gather in the streets and remember those who saved them, and banners that read "grace rocky save stars" flutter in the wind above the crowds.
coca cola airs a VERY insensitive commercial with some low quality eridian puppets. the commercial is slammed online and company stocks plummet
people continue to live their lives as normal. because of grace and rocky, because of the beetles, the sun is saved. earth keeps spinning.
do you ever deal with borrowed grief about ollie?
my cat just got diagnosed with cancer and we're not sure how treatable it is or how much time we have left with him. going to a specialist tomorrow about it just because our vet wasnt very knowledgable
my cat is the first pet thats been mine fully, and my first pet as an adult too. we found him as a stray about a month before i turned 18 and managed to get him inside the week after my 18th birthday. we've only had him for about 10 months at this point. it feels like too soon
obviously he was a street cat for most if not all of his life, but i just dont know what to do about it. hes not gone yet, hes happy and seems healthy, but im trying to prepare myself incase i need to make a decision i dont want to have to make. and its really hard
sorry if this is a tough ask you just have given some really great advice before and the way youre attached to ollie is very similar to how close i am with my cat. feel free to ignore/delete if this is too much tho
Oh yeah, borrowed grief is huge. I have to very purposefully not think about some things while I'm at work or else I'll just start crying out of the blue.
I think...
Okay, so I'm pretty sure I've told this story before but I'm gonna do it again.
I had this dream once- you know those dreams that feel so REAL, like the moment you wake up you're not even sure where you are?
Well I had a dream once where I lost someone I love in a very sudden and traumatizing way, and in the dream- which felt so incredibly alive and real- my number one fear, my number one regret after losing them- my most horrific thought in the aftermath- was, "Did they know how much I loved them? When they were alive, was there any doubt at all in their mind how important they were? Did they know how destroyed I would be by losing them?"
It was incomprehensible that they were gone, that I'd never hear their voice again or speak to them (ah fuck I'm crying irl, abort abort) BUT even worse than that was the fear that they died feeling like anything less than the entire world.
So... I was lucky enough to be physically nearby to that same person when I woke up as a snotty sobbing mess, so I could tell them immediately that I loved them so much, and I decided immediately that more important than anything else was telling people I care about that I love them.
Making sure I do everything I can to show them that they are cherished, so that one of us is inevitably separated from the other, niether of us has any regrets.
It's... probably a symptom of some kind of neurosis or something, but I can't stand to have the last thing I say to someone be unkind. I always have to tell them I love them, that I want them to be safe. So I know if one of us goes unexpectedly, I'll know I can grieve their loss without regret.
I love a lot of people, and I love Ollie. The difference with Ollie is that he is almost one hundred percent garunteed to pass away before I do. I'm going to live so much longer than him, if all goes well. Best case scenario for both of us ends with me mourning his loss for many lifetimes longer than he will ever know.
And I know now that when he's gone, when he leaves me behind (fuck, crying again, shit) my first major regret will be wondering if he felt loved enough. If I was kind enough, if he was happy enough, if he lived a life with any kind of pain or fear or worry.
So... I remind myself that no time is garunteed. That we have any time at all is a miracle, and it will someday end. So any time spent grieving is time that would be better spent convincing him he is cherished.
In a world where we can't own anything, where we can't possess anything, where we can't take anything with us, where we are born alone and die alone whether we like it or not....
Ugh. I don't know how to explain.
Okay, so like... if separation is inevitable, then the ones we love are already gone. Time just hasn't caught up yet. So I try and ask myself, "if I lost them yesterday, and I was here without them today, what would I be wishing I did? What feelings would I be wishing upon them? What would I regret not doing?" And then I try and DO that
And with everyone and everything I've lost since then... that's helped.
Living like what I love is already gone, anticipating what I might regret, and then speaking and acting in ways that correct that regret before it can be cemented into reality.
Appreciating the now, loving as much as I can. Being patient with the annoyances I'll someday miss and appreciating them as fleeting things makes them... enjoyable.
Listening to a boring ramble or obnoxious snore and knowing that a future version of me will wish I'd listened closer... it makes that precious.
I'm sorry you're losing your baby. I'm sorry that nothing I can say will make tht easier. I think the one thing I CAN say is that it isn't actually over yet, and in my opinion, the best thing you can do now is think of everything you'll wish you could have done for him when he's gone and do it now while he's still here.
And then after, you'll know that you did all you could.
It's helped me, at least.

This comment was left on a post about making the most of the Libby app. "Excessive use of generous lending policies" is the most absurd phrase I've ever seen anyone use to discuss libraries.

Hello skinny tgirl. Lately you've been complaining that your tits aren't growing. In front of you is a plate of food.
Unironically my tits grow faster for a few days every time I eat salmon
I should probably cook more salmon
Well yes salmon does have some fat in it! And it is good! Try and eat it with some carbs, like potatoes, or maybe blinis. Why not add some vegetables as well? Steamed brocolis, grilled leaks, roasted eggplant, and maybe some cream? That sounds delicious.
Idk who this man is but he is right. Eat girls

(7/30/26) The Red Cross just declared the second US blood crisis in its history.
Summer sees both a drop off in donations and, at least for our trauma center, a spike in traumas. Trauma centers across the US are in danger of running out of blood for our trauma patients TODAY, which is very scary but, unlike much of the other scary national news coming across our screens these days, is something you can help fix immediately and directly.
We need ASAP donations of blood, for people to spread the word, and for manager types to help facilitate others' donations. All blood types are needed, but universal donor blood (type O) is especially dire.
Same thing happening in Canada. Supply is down 20% and we were never at 100%. I can’t donate again until the fall. So if you can, please do.

so cool how advanced the algorithm has become, it literally only takes like a decade or more of spying on all my internet activity and then it can expertly curate a selection of 15-20 youtube videos that i don't really want to watch, and then keep showing me those videos over and over again for a week so i can scroll past them again. the future is now
how it genuinely feels
Someone really needs to remind Susie and Kris that polyamory also exists in the Light World. I think they forgor
the problem is the word "throuple" was introduced to them by Rouxls Kaard and I'm pretty sure they try like hell suppress their memories of Rouxls any time he's not actively on screen
Hexagon Quilt
This is the second time I've seen a video of this technique and this explanation is so clear! It does use more fabric than English paper piecing (EPP) but you end up with a double sided hexagon so don't have to source fabric for the backing.
I'm doing EPP at the moment but I have a hole punch to make the papers and just use leaflets and junk mail, so it doesn't feel wasteful. I don't think it's difficult either- in the video she mentions it's not for beginners, but I don't have that much experience with hand sewing or EPP and I've been finding it pretty easy so YMMV
I saw this video yesterday and was seized with the need to try it out immediately. Lookit my cute lil' hexagon baby!!
Here is what the backside looks like. OP notes this takes more fabric than paper piecing, but that excess fabric makes it already triple-layered. Besides not needing backing fabric, I don't think you'd need batting for this quilt at all. It's already thick and soft just from folding all that fabric into a hexagon.
Hexagon quilt tutorial video by tiktok user camelscrafts. Method:
Each hexagon begins as a 6" circle. camelscrafts does this by creating a paper template using a compass. According to the video, a 6" circle will create a hexagon that is 2.5 inches tall.
These hexagons are hand-sewn. Thread the needle.
With the fabric right side facing, find the center of the circle by folding it in half right sides together, then folding it in half again (wrong sides are facing). The top of the triangle shape is the center of the fabric circle.
Make a small stitch into the center of the fabric. The wrong side is still facing.
Unfold the circle. There will be a small stitch in the center.
Now the hexagon is created by folding the circle into itself: Take the needle to one of the edges of the fabric (it doesn't matter which one). Pull the needle through and pull the thread tight. This will fold down the fabric and create an edge of the hexagon. Crease the fold with your finger.
This fold has two corners, one at the top and one at the bottom. Put the needle into one of the corners and pull the thread taut. This will create another fold.
Continue this going around the circle until all of it is folded down, creating the hexagon. camelscrafts notes that the last corner pulled in may be a little bit "wonky" (no precise point in the corner) if the corners were not done precisely. However, that corner is pulled into the back, so is not visible from the front.
The hexagon is now formed. Sew around the folds in the middle of the circle to hold the folds in place. Tie off and cut the thread.
Attach hexagons to each other along the sides. With right sides together, whip stitch the sides together.
I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything
my friend just had an art show and they were communicating with the gallerist over email. They could clearly tell that the gallerist was using AI to respond to their emails, but just rolled their eyes and moved on.
and then on the day of the show, my friend asks, "where is the camera I requested?"
gallerist: "you didn't request a camera"
my friend: "I did, and you confirmed that you would have one here."
gallerist: "that isn't true."
and then she proceeded to pull up the email thread, and my friend could see that every single email they had sent had been summarized by AI, and that the gallerist had then had AI write a response to them based on the AI summary, and that the AI had detected that they needed a camera, and confirmed on behalf of the gallerist that they would bring a camera, but because the gallerist had offloaded the work of actually reading and responding, she simply hadn't actually made any note of it herself, therefore didn't bring it, nor did she even know one was needed.
so my friend had done all of this communication about their needs and expectations to be able to make the show possible, and the person whose job it was to read that information and get it done had simply.... not read the information and not done it. because AI.

There's this one specific interaction on reddit that I wouldn't call "infamous" but I also know that everyone who knows it knows it by the punchline, so in order to not ruin it for the ones who haven't, I'm just going to talk all of you through it as I'm saying this.
The beauty of it is that you could place that exact same dialogue into any time and place in human history and it would make just as much sense, you could have it as a conversation between sailors in a 1600s ship, a group of bronze-age warriors cleaning their weapons, stone age hunters walking home from a hunt, or a bunch of 21st century redditors on the internet, and it would hit just as splendidly.
There was this conversation about if you could have sex with any specific person from any time through human history, which one would you choose? Famous legendary lovers were brought up, queens, emperors and such were popular, might as well fuck Rasputin just to see what the hype was all about, the kind of answers one would expect.
Then some guy said he would choose his own late wife. He went on to talk about how brutal it is, that you might find the love of your life, but there's no promise that this life couldn't be suddenly cut short. That his body aches for hers and how there isn't much he wouldn't do for one more opportunity to make love to her one last time.
Now, I'd like you to imagine a pause in the conversation. A solemn, contemplative moment of silence, with several of the people present nodding in agreement that this is indeed the finest answer - it wasn't a competition, but there's no doing better than that.
And then someone breaks this solemn silence and says:
"I also choose this guy's dead wife."
For the sake of letting the full story be known: you have to imagine that after another moment of horrified silence, Dead Wife giy bursts out laughing and says, with a bittersweet smile "yeah, that was her sense of humor..."
Oh fuck that's right I neglected the most important part of this.
