There are a lot of people who start creative projects with no business or financial plan, because "who cares, it isn't important, we'll figure that out later". And you can't let yourself become that person. Not because I'm a sneering finance bro who thinks your woke animated youtube series wont make money, but because if you don't you'll wind up financially exploiting your friends for years
Look, it's none of my business if you wanna work yourself to the bone for no money so you can make your dream project a reality. I think you shouldn't, but also let's be real that's basically a rite of passage for young creatives. But as soon as you start involving other people? You need a plan. You need to be able to compensate them for their time, and you need to have it in writing
head in my hands, as someone who does extensive freelance TTRPG work - an industry in which the vast majority of those involved are doing it as a passion project/side hustle, and in which many people are friends with those they work for and with:
if you are doing any creative project with someone else in which money will be involved, make a contract. Doesn't need to be super formal. Get something laid out in writing that very clearly indicates what the person you are asking to do something is responsible for, the timeline in which they're expected to complete it, and the compensation they'll get for doing so.
"oh but we've been best friends since eighth grade" make a fucking contract.
"oh but this probably won't make much money anyway" make a fucking contract.
"oh but I don't know all that legalese" there are tons of pretty accessible templates available online if you research, just make sure it's one that suits your needs and you understand what's in it (it can be written in normal language without legalese, as long as it's clear), and make a fucking contract.
I've heard horror stories about this shit destroying projects, friendships, livelihoods, and in most cases the fallout could have been avoided (or at least mitigated) by having a clear legally binding document about everyone's responsibilities and compensation from the get-go. Do not assign someone work without a contract or some form of written agreement; do not work without a contract or some form of written agreement. please for the love of god.
IF MY BABY QAIS DIES, REMEMBER I BEGGED YOU.
My baby Qais is still bleeding and urgently needs five blood units along with medical supplies just to survive this nightmare.
Tonight, I could not properly clean Qais’s wound because medical supplies are too expensive, so I stood there terrified, watching the infection and bleeding grow worse before my eyes.
I beg you as a broken mother in Gaza who cannot protect her child from pain, hunger, and death. Please, don’t leave my baby Qais alone in this nightmare—donate now and help me save his life.
Please donate now Gofundme
Today, the doctor told me that besides the bleeding, my baby Qais is suffering from severe malnutrition and urgently needs proper food, but I cannot afford it. Please, I beg you donate now, help me provide food before his small body gives up completely.
I am living every moment afraid it might be his last, watching him struggle while I have nothing left to give him but tears and prayers. Please donate now and help me save him.
Unfortunately, I am still using torn pieces of old cloth instead of medical bandages because I do not have enough money to buy proper supplies, and my baby Qais’s wound keeps reopening and bleeding. Please, I beg you, donate now and help me save him.
TRAGICALLY, donations have completely stopped, and we are still sleeping on the street after our tent was destroyed. My children have nowhere safe to go. Please donate now and help us rebuild shelter today.
Likely one of the funniest things we will get from the extremely late-to-the-party among us show

Here's the thing about homeschooling that I think non-homeschooled kids don't and can't understand. You can have the best parents on the planet with the best intentions on the planet and homeschool will still seriously fuck you up. There is no way to do it ethically. I know because I basically had the best possible homeschooling experience.
My parents pulled me for the fourth grade, and I was homeschooled until the end of high school. Nine entire years. They pulled me from the public schools for a perfectly reasonable reason — my mental health was in the toilet and I needed to be away from other kids who might hurt me as they had spent all of my third grade year doing. My mom has a fucking PhD in neuroscience and tutors math professionally. She was, during the ten years that my siblings and I were homeschooled, the best, kindest, most caring, understanding, lovely teacher you could ask for.
But I'm still broken. That's the thing about homeschool. You can have the best experience possible in homeschool and still come out a fundamentally broken person. My social development stopped at the age of 10. I'm a 22 year old adult woman with the social skills of a 10 year old. That's not to say that that COULDN'T have happened in public school, but being homeschooled only made it more of a certainty. Both of my siblings and I have fewer coping strategies on average than our peers with similar neurodivergencies because we basically did not live in the real world for a decade during key developmental years.
Don't ban homeschooling because of the religious nuts. There are plenty of them. Hell, I KNEW plenty of them. But there are also plenty of quote unquote "good" homeschool families. Ones that do everything you would hope the model homeschool family does. And they are still hurting their children, even if unintentionally, because homeschooling is an inhrently traumatic experience. It's isolating. For seven entire years of my life, I had no friends. Not because I was a social outcast, but because I didn't even SEE anybody regularly enough. But, nonetheless, I knew people. You generally do if you get involved in the community.
Ban homeschooling because it breaks and utterly destroys everyone who goes through it.
Everyone.
I'm sorry, Lauren. I'm sorry, Kade. I'm sorry to the boy whose name I can no longer remember. I'm sorry that I survived and you didn't.
Been talking about this with friends so I present to you, the cursed spectrum of media literacy

its infuriating watching people talk around transmisogyny on this website like its some sort of abstract issue, and not an indicator of attitude. heres one experience i had: a transmasc coworker became obviously uncomfortable when i mentioned transmisogyny and started handwringing about female socialisation. less than a week later he sexually harassed me on the job.
like do you get it? he thought he couldnt harm me because hes not like other men and implicitly understands what women want, and im not like other women and i am therefore not liable to be harmed.that i do not want this doesnt enter his head.
but it cashes out exactly the same doesnt it? he uses power to put me in my place. he sees me as a sex object, he feels safe to indicate this to me. he, by whispering an unsolicited comment to me about my body in a quiet moment, perpetrates just one more utterly unremarkable instance of a man seeing a woman as beneath him. because in neglecting transmisogyny he has become just like the men he presumes his difference from. and if you dont get with it, youll do just the same :)

loveeee characters who think they're likable but not lovable. characters who know they have surface-level admirable or alluring traits and so make sure to highlight those traits so that nobody looks closer to see what's underneath. characters who know they're hot or clever or cool and use that as a suit of armor so that no one ever gets close to them, because when they strip bare and show their vulnerability they're not any of those things, which means they have nothing left to make up for who they inherently are

Teen’s organs failing & NO TREATMENT in >1 MONTH
19-year-old Khalil Al Habil's liver and kidneys are failing. Shrapnel damage from the bombardment that killed his baby brother Omar has gone mostly untreated due to a lack of funds and resources. The ill effects of this damage have progressed to the point that the organs are losing their ability to function. Khalil urgently needs 3 rounds of treatment to combat the effects of his deteriorating liver and kidneys.
We've paid off the first round of treatments but Khalil has two treatments that he still needs. The second costs about $1,250 usd, but we haven’t made much progress in more than a month and his condition is getting progressively worse. We need to meet this second goal ASAP!!!
Current: $10,052 out of $10,407 usd (12 May)
Need to raise: $355 usd
Hello, my name is Khalil, I'm 19 years old, from Gaza.
Vetting information linked in the last reblog of this post, courtesy of murderbot
Khalil is in so much pain that he can barely access the internet to contact me.
The lethargy and fatigue caused by his deteriorating organ function only make reaching out more difficult. He is in very, very bad shape, and I’m extremely worried about him.
He has gone so long between sessions that he requires additional medications to sustain him between treatments. With a price of $1500 for the treatment for his failing organs, and $500 for supplementary medications, this is where we are for round 3:
Current: $10,552 out of $12,407 usd (7 June)
Need to meet temporary goal: $1,855 usd
blue sunset on Mars is a real phenomenon caused by the way Martian dust scatters sunlight.
Unlike Earth, where sunsets are red and orange due to the scattering of shorter blue wavelengths by our atmosphere, Mars has an extremely fine dust that scatters blue light more efficiently near the Sun.
So during sunset on Mars, the sky turns reddish-brown while the area around the Sun glows a soft blue. It’s the opposite of what we experience on Earth.
NASA’s rovers have captured this eerie sight

”all language is approximation” believers when my autistic ass finally weaves together the exact right linguistic phrase that conveys pure information and shatters qualia as we know it
The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.
Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"
The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.
Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."
THIS IS OPEN TO COMMENT UNTIL JULY 13, 2026
This is all very bad and horrible, but I want to be clear that it’s worse and more sweeping than just eliminating trans research.
This torches everything. And I do mean everything.
A very abbreviated list of its ramifications include (but are not limited to):
ending funding for ALL DEI related initiatives
allowing the government to terminate grants at any point for any reason
preventing researchers from publishing, going to conferences, and being part of academic societies
requiring that topics must support the president’s agenda.
What this means, and if anything I’m under selling it, is the death of science and research in America. It allows the government to restrict any topic they please at a whims notice, putting officials who have no background in the topic in charge of deciding funding continuity. It controls what gets researched and if/how researchers are allowed to share their discoveries. There are no books to burn if the government never allows them to be written. This is fascism plain and simple.
Please, if you only ever write one public comment, this is the one to do.
Bringing back this guide to writing an effective public comment. This gives you the basics you need to know, what you need to include, a basic outline you can follow, etc.
Public comments are not a vote, it is a chance for you to say "here is an issue with this law I think you need to address" and provide justification for legal challenges if it goes forward:
"Comments raise the bar that agencies have to meet when making a rule; “if an agency fails to adequately respond to significant, relevant comments in a final rule, members of the public may seek to challenge the rule in court on that basis and claim it could be struck down.ˮ"
But also, if possible, don't stop at writing a comment. Don't stop at calling your representatives. You should ideally be talking to people in your community about this and organizing resistance on-the-ground; there is a good chance people are already doing that even if you aren't hearing about it.
Also, please keep in mind, this is 100%, without a doubt, wholly unconsitituonal. They will try to enforce it regardless, but that does not make it legal. Do not treat this as law because it is not.
