The Venus Sandpiper Returns

Here up in Lancashire’s Pennine hills and valleys, the sun tends to be a little shy. This is an area noted for its high rainfall, typically around 5 feet. We see plenty of cloudy skies and the water supply of big seaside resorts like Blackpool depends very much on that! As a youth hostelling teen, back in the 1980s, walking these self same hills, we would generally arrive at our destinations soaked to the skin.

Latterly however, we have had wall to wall sunshine and warmth. Okay, not the oppressive heat of the English southerners right now, just excellent hot days with temperatures between 70 and 80 Fahrenheit. We headed out to northern Lancashire to enjoy it.

This is excellent naturist hiking weather, clothes are really not required, indeed, they wouldn’t really serve any useful purpose. As usual, we met absolutely nobody (maybe they were all on the sofa indoors watching the World Cup). Beautiful weather like this generally doesn’t last long up here and we took a picnic in our rucksacks.

To me, the nicest places always, to eat your lunch on days like this are by a river. Great rivers abound here in Lancashire; the Ribble, the Irwell, the Hodder, the Calder and the Wyre. These, with their many tributaries, drain a massive upland area of upland, grazed only by sheep. The valleys are leafy and well wooded making great spots to rest in the heat of the day. The peaty brown water cascades down from the tops and is great for cooling tired feet. Your feet look orange as you dip them in the stream and splash.
