ruins of St Andrews Cathedral in Fife, Scotland
The komusō (literally “priest of nothingness” or “monk of emptiness”) were a group of Zen Buddhist mendicant monks who wandered the roads of Edo period Japan. They would play elaborate tunes on their bamboo flutes as they begged for alms, their faces (and thus, their ego) completely concealed by a distinctive hood woven from straws or reeds. Unsurprisingly, many were recruited as spies or were actually ninja or ronin in disguise, and eventually their temples and their schools were abolished for meddling in material affairs instead of spiritual ones.
While its eyes are not as big as its mummy's, this baby tawny frogmouth is still using its beady peepers to see the best it can

I ADORE!!!
Imagine if a like 8 foot tall guy that looked kinda like an alien species just kinda showed up at the house you rent a room in and crashed on the couch and at first everyone hated him but you kinda just accepted this weird massive kinda-human alien species thing as a part of your group even though he's like twice the size of everyone else there
Cuz that's literally happening to sea lions in San Francisco right now
So there's two species of sea lion in North America: the California sea lion, ranging along California (including Baja) but not ranging into the north coast or into oregon
And the Stellar's sea lion, which are WAY bigger and live in Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska
A male Stellars sea lion showed up in SF like a month ago and just kinda. Didn't know what to do, and joined a colony of California sea lions, and is just kinda chilling there now.
Weird vagrant species happen from time to time, but this is just a particularly funny instance of a highly social species getting very lost, and just trying to blend in with its closest nearby relatives
In 1850, a farmer found a secret village. It was later determined to be older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Archeologists estimated that 100 people lived in this village named Skara Brae, the "Scottish Pompeii." The houses were connected to each other by tunnels, and each house could be closed off with a stone door.
One of my absolute favorite artifacts, the Skara Brae Buddo is from here!
This super cute figurine is from aprox. 2900–2400 BC, and one of the handful known figurines from the British Neolithic.
The figurine got its name when it was rediscovered in 2016: “Buddo” is an Orcadian word, a term of endearment and isn’t gender-specific. In the Neolithic most human figurines represented the feminine, often believed to be the goddesses of fertility and/or beauty, so this figurine is quite unique as it doesn’t have gendered features!
There’s a hole on each side, so it’s most likely that it was suspended (inside the home or as some kind of body ornament).
Its purpose is widely argued, some beleive the figurine to be a child’s toy, but it easily could’ve been an ‘idol’ or ‘fetish’ (= meaning it had a ritualistic and religious role).
Source for my summary:
In the first of a new feature, we explore some of the incredible artefacts that can be found in museums, archives and heritage centres acros
They had a sewer system!! In 3180-2500 BCE! What!!!
Shout out to that time I made a little house at Skara Brae for me and my friend Cack.
Extra shout out to the lady who watched me, oozing outrage and disapproval at the THOUGHTLESS tourists running ROUGHSHOD all over the ANCIENT SITE, but too British to do more than glower, somehow oblivious to the fact that we were actually nowhere near the site.
I wonder what she thought this place was used for, and I hope she never realised that we were *on the beach* and the archaeological wonder was behind her all along (and we put it all back flat after too)
Spotted an interesting behavior from this juvenile black-crowned night heron the other day. This appears to be a fish-luring technique called bill vibration that is more common in these low visibility waters where it’s hard to spot prey. The small movements at the surface of the water are thought to attract curious fish, which can then be snatched up by feel! No luck for the little guy on this occasion but probably good practice to get the move down at least.

There's something so good about the wild type.
What are those cool spiky feathers?? (Sorry I know nothing about these cool gals!)
You've been!! BAMBOOZLED!!
Those are actually not spiky feathers at all! They sure do look like it, though, and that's likely the point- if I were a raptor looking down upon a pincushion, I would think twice about grabbing it with my bare feet.
However, it's a ruse! Just a marking on a feather
Pretty neat, yeah?
There's something so uniquely joyful about a mare taking her new baby out for a run. I could watch them all day.

tree grafting techniques
I took a class on this lately! The key point is to get the cambium layers connected - just underneath the bark on a tree is where all the xylem and phloem straws that run nutrients up and down are, and those have to a) connect b) without getting bent or clogged. They're very tiny so you really have to not touch the ends when you do this.
There are various techniques depending on what part of the year you are doing this - the ones where they're sliding a bud into existing bark are more summer techniques, whereas when they're chocking things together that's an earlier year sort of thing. We didn't talk about the ones where they're rooting branches, because we were talking about grafting fruit trees, specifically apples, onto root stock.
...all that being said I am from an expert after one class in which I sugar crashed and was not safe to handle knives by the time we got to that point. You should look into what your local co-op extension offers, it's a fine time of year for it!
