i may have said something like this before but “autism and adhd are only disabilities because of capitalism!!” always reads to me like a wokified version of “it’s all in your head.” what’s the post-capitalist utopia’s plan to eradicate the digestive issues, chronic pain, and hypermobility-related injuries that all come directly from my autism? what’s its plan to eradicate my partner’s balance issues and the executive dysfunction that periodically stops herself from enjoying her hobbies or feeding herself, even with her adhd medicated? MUCH more importantly, what’s the post-capitalist utopia’s plan to un-disable my friends and family whose autism symptoms mean they need external assistance to communicate, move, or eat? those needs aren’t dictated by capitalism. removing capitalism won’t remove day to day bodily functions. people are going to be disabled, a world without disabled people has never existed and never will, and wishing that away for your own comfort is genuinely insulting

a utopia with no mental or intellectual disabilities is a world where a number of members of my family have been wiped off the face of the earth and replaced with strangers, it’s a world where my body and mind has been extensively changed without my consent, chiseling out things i genuinely don’t want to lose and replacing them with wax. mormonism teaches that, just like how gay people will be “fixed” in heaven and made straight and trans people will be “fixed” and made cis, disabled people will be “fixed” and made “normal.” i’ve heard mothers tearfully talking about how they can’t wait to meet the normal boy waiting for them in heaven when their intellectually disabled son beside them has died

i think the key difference between george lucas’s star wars and disney’s star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that’s how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can’t have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you’re a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can’t take sides. you can’t decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.

I have been looking for this post for years after I came across it and it’s finally here and I need to reblog this because it is absolutely and entirely accurate.

excuse me for dipping lower and lower into Neurodivergent Exceptionalism here, which I do not like, but the autistic assumption that everyone else is just as well-meaning and altruistic and empathic and informed as you are is one of the most dangerous parts of being Like This and I wish I knew the magic words to disillusion especially girls about this in about 5th grade. because the only other way to get there is through being personally brutalized and frankly not even that always works

your homework assignment is to actually get angry at the next person who either intentionally or through callous disregard for your needs makes your life worse. then, if possible through circumstance and safety, either make that anger their problem, or eject them from your life. enough already
