Law enforcement continues using bunk science (hair matching, bite mark analysis, blood spatter analysis, drug sniffing dogs, polygraphs, etc) because they are convenient and because admitting that they're bullshit would lead to countless convictions being thrown out the window and likely a massive fllood oof lawsuits not just from people who were wrongfully convicted but also from the families of those executed over pseudoscientific methods.
Just in case people didn't know, drug sniffing dogs are almost always reacting to their HANDLERS, not to actual smells. If a handler's body language shows they want the dog to give an alert (which the dog will be awarded for), then the dog will alert. This is true even if the handler isn't consciously giving any signs or commands.
It's estimated that only around 30%, often found to be even less, of drug sniffing dog alerts are actually accurate and the vast majority of those real alerts are for things like a baggie of weed.
And of course that's not even getting into cops who use dogs as a quick excuse when they're planting evidence.
For decades, courts have treated the alert of a drug-sniffing dog as near-infallible evidence of criminal activity. But what if the dogs are

"Quit blaming all white people for slavery."
They don't blame all white people for slavery. They only blame those who would have supported slavery.
You want to "make America great again" and believe that the time it was great was "when it was founded"? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You expect protesters to be peaceful? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You support the use of prison labor? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You support ICE and Alligator Alcatraz? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You believe that people can be "illegal"? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You support law enforcement? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You believe that complying is the best way to be safe? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You oppose Black Lives Matter? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
You complain about crime rates rising if immigrants are welcomed? Congratulations. You would have supported slavery.
if i had a dick i would love to have a disappointing orgasm in the shower while thinking of something or someone that i felt i should not be thinking about & then stand under the water with my forehead against a wall watching the proof of my guilt & shame go down the drain
The insight I get into the female mind thanks to this website is amazing.

this is the kind of comradeship we need to start the month off on.
makes me sad that most YouTube art videos are about "how to make your ocs interesting", "how to grow your account in social media", "how to not make mary sues" like what happened to just drawing for fun and sharing it- oh wait I forgot this is the result of lolcowing people for their technical art skills and or clout related things.
we are in an era where people openly and harshly judge people's creative output because of the normalization of having a "freak" of the week. it makes me sad cuz as artists we should be having fun, not treating social media like an art competition or forcing our art to be "perfect" and digestible.
why is it so hard for people to grasp that disabilities disable and chronic illnesses are chronic. yes even when it inconveniences you. yes even when your patience runs out

we justifiably give Biden a lot of shit but I think "at least 3" is the funniest possible response to some right wing dipshit asking you how many genders there are
wait it gets better
Man I was trying to tell my family about how I was cutting my weed consumption but I couldn't remember the word for weed (ëë§ě´/ëë§) and my brain was like "UHHH there's a ă " and I ended up blurting out that I'm taking a break from ěë°°ěś (cabbage) T_T
My parents, who have lived in the United States for over 30 years: Okay, good idea, keep it up
Korean relatives: [screaming and gnashing of teeth, garments torn asunder, ashes sprinkled into tear-streaked faces] YOU'VE BEEN DOING WHAT
Wait, wait, wait. What do you guys think my family in Korea is freaking out about in this context?
The fact that you smoke weed at all
You apparently cutting back on cabbage
Oh my god okay this is on me, I'm sorry. I see how the two reblogs might seem linked and I forgot a lot of people might not know about Korea's strict intolerance of weed. I was like "Wow, a surprising number of people know about this" before realizing what the more likely joke being perceived here was
It was easier for me to get heroin and meth in South Korea than weed, for the reference.
Every culture seems to have food it stereotypically gets weirdly purist about, I just assumed that cabbage was central to Korean cuisine and didn't question it
iâm reading why does he do that and this last part has been ON FIRE, i am hollering in my house.
while iâm talking about this book again i should mention that, since itâs an abuse resource, Why Does He Do That is available to read for free as a pdf, and iâd highly recommend it.
[Alt text: Is He Doing It On Purpose?
When a client of mine tells me that he became abusive because he lost control of himself, I ask him why he didnât do something even worse. For example, I might say, âYou called her a fucking whore, you grabbed the phone out of her hand and whipped it across the room, and then you gave her a shove and she fell down. There she was at your feet, where it would have been easy to kick her in the head. Now, you have just finished telling me that you were âtotally out of controlâ at that time, but you didnât kick her. What stopped you?â And the client can always give me a reason. Here are some common explanations:
âI wouldnât want to cause her a serious injury.â
âI realized one of the children was watching.â
âI was afraid someone would call the police.â
âI could kill her if I did that.â
âThe fight was getting loud, and I was afraid neighbors would hear.â
And the most frequent response of all:
âJesus, I wouldnât do that. I would never do something like that to her.â
The response that I almost never heardâI remember hearing it twice in fifteen yearsâwas: âI donât know.â
These ready answers strip the cover off of my clientsâ loss-of-control excuse. While a man is on an abusive rampage, verbally or physically, his mind maintains awareness of a number of questions: âAm I doing something that other people could find out about, so it could make me look bad? Am I doing anything that could get me in legal trouble? Could I get hurt myself? Am I doing anything that I myself consider too cruel, gross, or violent?â
A critical insight seeped into me from working with my first few dozen clients: An abuser almost never does anything that he himself considers morally unacceptable. He may hide what he does because he thinks other people would disagree with it, but he feels justified inside. I canât remember a client ever having said to me: âThereâs no way I can defend what I did. It was just totally wrong.â He invariably has a reason that he considers good enough. In short, an abuserâs core problem is that he has a distorted sense of right and wrong. /End alt text]
Tried to tip a tumblr blog at 1am and it was such a suspicious transaction it immediately put a full fraud freeze on my account
Fortunately, banks no longer just ask 'did you make that transaction' they want to make sure you weren't scammed into making that transaction and 5mins after their call will give away all your money anyway.
This is an honest to goodness life saving movement and I cannot be happier banks are adopting it
Unfortunately, it meant I had to have the most embarrassing financial call of my life
-
Me: Ah yeah I was just trying to tip a tumblr blog
Cash: right and were you directed there by a Facebook link? An Instagram advert?
Me: no I was just on tumblr...on purpose
-
Caah: and this person asked you for money?
Me: oh no they just had a funny story, which happened to be about money and I thought, "wouldn't it be funny if I tipped them"
-
Me: * covering a reblog by reblog update on the adventures my mutual was having *
Cash: okay I don't think that can actually happen though..
Me: It might not have, but i was happy to tip them just because it was funny
-
Cash: and how well do you think you know this person?
Me: *considers explaining how much I know about a beloved mutual without ever knowing their name or face* ... I have no idea who this person is
I think in the end Cash decided there was no saving me from myself

âWow, yeah, Iâve never heard of that, it sounds really fucked up. Bet those perverts south of here would do it thoughâ
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
