I woke up in a place I do not know, it seems to be some kind of forest, but I definitely have not been here before. I sit up and take a look around me. It's all trees, nothing else except maybe some rocks. Glancing down at myself I catch a glimpse of my jagged hands, full of cuts. I seem to have fallen. But how did I get here? I don't remember anything except my name. John, and the fact that I seem to always worry about everything. but that doesn't matter right now. I have to get out. It takes an enormous amount of will to get up, but I do eventually, and I take another look at what surrounds me. It's some time in the afternoon and there is no one else here.
At least that's what I thought. That's what I thought until I heard a soft crack, the next one was louder, they're coming from somewhere behind me. I turn around to see what it might be but the noises won't stop. one. two. three. four. they get louder and closer and quicker. crack. crack. crack. like a branch being stepped on, a leaf torn apart. crack. I have no way of knowing what awaits me in this forest, and the thought of that leads to another, and another, and one more. It's the kind of thinking that starts and wont stop, the kind with a start but no end, the kind nobody would want to have. The thoughts that keep you up at night, the thoughts that make your heart race. These thoughts usually come and go with time, I know that for sure. One of them leads to more, and they get worse and worse with every second.
I end up imagining the worse ever outcome of any situation, be it logical or the complete oposite and all this seems to be able to happen in a matter of seconds. one by one, they come and go, they're my nightmares, haunting me, following me. The noises stop. I snap out of it. My heart rate has risen, my mind is impatient and all I hear is silence. Sometimes, silence makes it worse. It makes room for even more thinking, good thoughts, bad thoughts, any thoughts.Â
Distracted by my mind's restlessness I do not notice that whatever has been stepping on those braches, or so it seems, has been getting closer, and closer. snap. I hear a twig crack right behind me. I can already see it, breathing on my neck, staring vaguely at my amorphous shape from up close.
Thinking, Thinking. I can't stop thinking, but in between these thoughts I find that, there certainly seems to be something watching me up close, right behind me. its not just a thought. so, as opposed to every single thought making its way through my head, I decide to turn around and face whatever is making me anxious, stressed, scared. I turn around to find that there is absolutely nothing there. nothing. I have let my mind play tricks on itself. Lying. Thinking and thinking and thinking, but the mind can only take so much, then it starts believing its own ruse, its own trick. It starts creating it, therefore seeing it. hearing it. when in the real world I can see that, there is nothing there.
