literally a bird

One of my absolute favorite local birds, the Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica)! These guys are very abundant here, and I love their personality and little songs. Very often on my walks in Spring, a bluethroat male will jump out of the bush, puff up its beautiful chest and sing as loud as he can, sometimes using bits and bobs from other birds' songs.

the carolina wren is a large wren species (comparative to other wrens) common in the eastern united states along with an extreme southern portion of ontario, canada and the extreme northeast of mexico. despite their small size, they have bold, daring personalities, and are assertive & territorial even around much larger birds. their preferred habitats are dense forests, forest edges, and suburban areas like wooded backyards (they also visit birdfeeders). they are south carolina’s state bird, and a beloved backyard visitor across the southeast USA. there are seven recognized subspecies, all of which vary slightly in song and appearance. they are overall a rich chestnut-brown, with white markings & darker brown bars. sexual dimorphism is present, with males being slightly larger than females. carolina wrens tend to be monogamous, and often mate for life.

Today I found a new bowl! In its center is a little hill with a little house. I will carry it down to the shore and fill it up, and whomever lives in that little house can have a tiny portion of my meal. I hope they have a nice bowl to put it in..
