Just a woman who really likes birds and birdwomen | In my twenties, English isn't my native language | Peregrine Falcon is the best bird, dinosaur and animal | This is a side blog!
Hey, you can call me Cheglok here! I'm a primarily traditional artist, who really loves birds, women and, of course, birdwomen. My fav mediums are watercolors and color pencils, but I also dabble in digital sometimes.
Most of my art centers around my characters and the story I'm writing! It's called Running with a Falcon and you can read it here. In short, one of my main characters Ashlyn rescues Reya, the other main character, from a cage in a library, and then the story follows Reya's recovery and their life and relationship. You can also find some other shorter stories I posted on ao3.
The tag #cgkashrae is for all art with my characters.
Below the cut is information on the world and characters!
Some main info on my story:
Eanians are my race of human-bird hybrids. They are about 4-5 times smaller than a human (Reya is about 40cm tall, which is a little above average for them), have wings and feathers on their back that can be of any bird, as well as bird feet. They are also capable of magic. They speak their own language called Eanian, which is more or less a global language for them with tons of different dialects. The relationship between humans and Eanians varies depending on the region, but where my story takes place it is quite negative; not outright hostile, but the different species don't communicate with one another.
The world itself is not Earth, the continents and geography are different, and the technological development of humans roughly corresponds to the beginning of the 20th century. The are many islands that have no human population but are inhabited by Eanians.
Reya Rejsend is a Peregrine Falcon Eanian, she is about 24yo at the beginning of the story and is around 40cm tall (as a human she'd be 179cm). She is very social, easy going, but can be prone to conflict. Before being captured by humans she was an athlete (which is also spiritual in their culture), but had to quit because of wing trauma caused by humans. She is also an artist and knows bookbinding from her mother.
Ashlyn Caragh is a normal human, she is around 22yo at the start and is 158cm tall. If she were an Eanian, she'd be a little owl. Ash is a typical introvert and keeps to herself, though she finds no issue in socializing when she has to. She is a philology student and a writer, though it'll take her a long time and and a serious illness before she ever considers publishing her writing.
Ash and Reya are my main characters and the story follows mostly them and their relationship.
Some other characters that I have are:
Fiona Attis, a 34yo human, she comes from a dysfunctional family and an abusive marriage, where she had a daughter named Saoirse. After escaping with her from her husband, she settled in a small village and lives there with Saoirse and..
Rowan (Gaothe) Attis, a 40yo Common Kingfisher Eanian. As the species suggests, she is a fisherwoman. Very closed off, kinda gruff. She first meets the human family when Saoirse, at 6 years old, gets lost in the woods, and then slowly gets close to them, eventually marrying Fiona, taking her last name, and moving into her house.
Saoirse Attis is 13yo, a very adventurous and curious kid. Because her mom is always working and their house is somewhat far away, she often feels lonely, which led to her to bond with Rowan.

Sometimes, when I read about bird and animal observations in other places of the world, I start to feel like my local area is a lot less 'exciting' or 'rich' in wildlife, and in general quite 'boring', which is not made better by the fact that almost nobody outside of my country knows about its existence. So, I decided to compile some of our local Southern Ural birds as a little tribute. I've seen seven of these, and five were painted from my own photos :)

There is a certain kind of freedom that comes with deciding not to share your writing at all, except maybe with one or two closest people. A freedom to not care of opinion, a freedom to just work and enjoy said work for what it is. If not for that freedom I gave myself recently, I wouldn't have felt the enjoyment of writing again, I think. The enjoyment of seeing a story come together, of words and sentences weaving in together to become one beautiful tapestry that just makes sense. The enjoyment of, simply, just spending time in that world and with those people, seeing their lives, feeling their emotions, so different yet the same to mine.
But (why does there always have to be a but?), it is also so lonely. So, so lonely to have spent so much time on something I wished to share with people, to have it reach and connect with a person just like me, only to find out that person apparently does not exist. I know she does, I know, logically, that she has to exist. But the more I search for her, the more isolated I feel. I feel 'niche', in the worst sense of the word. So specific, too specific, to a point nobody just gives a shit.
Have I decided not to share my writing online to gift myself freedom, or was it actually to protect myself from further disappointment and loneliness? I guess, the why doesn't really matter. At the end of the day, I just wish I was a different person who could make something that people would want to spend time with.
Some info on language (and other related bits) in my worldbuildung:
All Eanians, my race of small bird people, come from a single population of normal Homo Sapiens (via magic, don't ask for details yet). Because of that, their languages are distant relatives of other human languages of the area that the original Eanians came from, and share only a few core similarities with them, like sentence structure. They differ a lot when it comes to phonetics, as due to having both a larynx and a syrinx Eanians can make a wider range of sounds. The structure of the syrinx depends on what bird species the Eanian is, e. g. Reya is a Peregrine Falcon, so she can make any sound a falcon can, but only those. Parrot, corvid, starling and lyrebird Eanians can use their syrinx to mimic any sounds they want, including speech (which naturally sounds more "robotic"), and sometimes scare humans with it. Though, bird sounds are not considered a part of language, per say. They are more akin to body language, and are used together with "normal" language. Baby Eanians first vocalize like birds only (which is as annoying as it sounds), and learn to speak at around two years old. As they age, bird vocalizations reduce in frequency. (continued under cut)
Wings also play an important part in communication, like any body part. The feathers stand up when they are scared, stressed, angry, they hug each other with their wings, dance using them, etc.
Eanians are a cosmopolitan species and, in fact, live and thrive in more environments than us. Their flying allows them to travel much more easily, and migration is a normal part of many Eanians' life (it depends on their particular culture, a lot of Eanians are not nomadic. Though, the concept of 'borders' as it exists in humans doesn't apply to Eanian cultures, they don't have governments and live in isolated communities of various sizes). There are several different Eanian languages but they are relatively similar to each other, and most Eanians can either understand them (such as how a Polish speaker can vaguely understand Belarusian), or just speak them. That is entirely due to their cosmopolitan nature and frequent travels.
Ash learned Eanian (I say 'Eanian', but only the language that is spoken in Reya's area is meant) first as a pre-teen from a an old school teacher, who never told her where she learned the language from. After the teacher died, Ashlyn stopped really using the language, until discovering Reya. Her first attempts at speaking with her were very clumsy, to say the least. But she needed to speak to her and had no other way of communicating. Thus, over the year of talking with a native speaker Ash's Eanian became a lot better, and afterwards, over many years of speaking and, eventually, reading and writing, Reya can proudly say that her human wife speaks Eanian like a native, albeit with a rather strong "human" accent (Note: this is all a part of my actual writing). Reya, on the other hand, never learned the 'human' language, which in Ash's case is called Quellian. So, when interacting with Ash's family members, Ash always acts as an interpreter.
I haven't talked about them much yet, but I have another human/Eanian couple in my story, Rowan and Fiona, and their daughter Saoirse. In their case, all people involved learned the other language, though it took a good while. For the first year, they were using magic candies to speak to each other, which Rowan ordered from her Raven friend who does magic as her job. The candies have a lot of downsides though, such as only lasting several hours and being rather expensive to craft, as well as not tasting particularly good.

Art has not been arting lately bc I finally found a job and now often tired, but! My gf sent me this rly funny pic (under cut) and I had to redraw it with Reya. She is a perfect (bird)woman, to me
in 2026, remember how GOOD writing feels. remember how satsfying it is to get your characters to the point you have been dying to get to, where they will experience the love, fear, relief or whatever the feeling you want to bring to life may be. let this year be the year of writing, prgress and of satisfactory endings.

Having a lot of interests is awesome, until you want to write your story (finally!), knit AND crochet several pairs of socks, a vest, a rug, a hat, etc, etc, etc, draw and paint several drawings in watercolors, pencils and also digitally, bookbind myself three new notebooks for various other interests, and at the same time I also need to exercise AND there's a wild Goshawk nest I found and want to watch at least once a week!!!! I finally got employed so that makes me have less time by default, but even when I was jobless I still had that problem :") So much to do, so little time, such a short life
