You know what I miss the most about pre-1990s fantasy? Novels with titled chapters and tables of contents. I know you still get them now and again, but before the 90s it was common practice, and you wouldn't believe how much easier it is to discuss shit when you've got named episodes to go on.
problematic rage gap. one partner tries to bring nuance and understanding to a tough situation. the other wants to blow up the earth about it.
my toxic trait as a writer is that I’ll be like “I have free time. I am going to write right now” and then I. don’t
The thing about a good character flaw is that it has to be the same thing as their greatest strength just turned up too high. the person who loves deeply and therefore controls. the person who sees everything and therefore trusts nothing. the person who is so loyal they lose themselves. there are no clean villains and no clean heroes and once you understand that in fiction you can't unsee it in people. everyone is just their best quality at the wrong volume.

really specific trope i like that i feel like can only be explained in a diagram
There is no drug on earth that can replicate the absolute euphoria of hitting a writing flow state at 2:00 AM. You aren’t even typing anymore. You are a vessel. You are a channel for the gods. The characters are speaking directly into your brain and you’re just the stenographer trying to keep up. You feel like you could fight a bear. You feel like you invented the alphabet
I don't know how to articulate this well, but I really fucking hate the way a lot of thin writers write fat characters. Like how men write women "breasting boobily" there is something so dehumanizing about how fat characters are often written. "He waddled", "he lumbered", the writer of the book I'm reading always mentions this characters "fleshy hand" when he does something with his hand. Like, we already know that he's fat. There is no need to describe everything he does as "doing it fatly".
*fishes this absolute treasure from the tags*
Oh boy, a complex character who's a woman! I love messy characters who hurt everyone around them and continue the cycles that hurt them!! Can't wait to share this joy with fellow fans– why's everyone calling her a bitch
These remind me of this drawing by Franz Kafka from the 1900s. We've been feeling this way for a long time.
prev, i'm sure you mean my guy Leonid Pasternak
9th century illustration of a miserable saint (probably Matthew) trying to write
Pottery art from 450 BCE Rhodes, Greece, showing a very stressed out woman (probably Sappho) trying to write
Fragments from ancient New Kingdom Egyptian tomb circa 1350-1333 BCE showing several scribes in the depths of writing hell

in re conversations that thankfully seem to be occurring only on other sites, i actually love when the fiction i'm reading uses words i don't know and have to look up! admittedly it does not happen often, because i am an adult who read a lot as a kid and has since done what is frankly maybe a bit too much education, but please do casually drop words like phalanstery in your book so i have to look it up and then find myself reading wikipedia pages about 19th century socialist utopianism! please do throw around rare plants and birds whose names i don't know because they're not native/common anywhere i've ever been! then i get to look at pictures of things that i've never seen before!
i had three fic ideas. wrote one. i still have three fic ideas. this is not how math is supposed to work.

Listen. They’re called “plot bunnies” for a reason, and it’s not just because they hop around all over your brain demanding attention.

Fictional country: average fantasy
Fictional small town in the middle of nowhere in real country: par for the course in any genre
Fictional major city in real country: standard fair, but it's usually clearly based on a real city
Fictional suburb of real major city in real country: strange but I can see the application
Real major city in fictional country: Chicago can be anywhere you dream of
Please. Write it. Write the thing. Even if you feel like it's shit. Even if you think no one will read it. Even if no one reads it. Even if you think the words make no sense. Even if it breaks your heart. Especially if it breaks your heart.
Please. Write it.
I need to write what I write because I need trans characters who are badly emotionally and physically damaged, living in societies that act with psychological and physical violence against them, but who do not have any interest in questioning their own mental health or morality. I want their relationships to be fraught with poor communication and lack of emotional understanding, because without realizing it they are hanging onto each other just to have something to hold while the entire world is burning down. And they're burning with it, and they're feeding the flames, but for the time they have, they burst with light.
No coherent self interrogation, no open and transparent shared feelings. Just fucked up the whole way down.

I believe authors should be cryptic and unhelpful in the interpretation of their own work or even act like they’re dead and never comment on it ever
vampirism poses the question "what if there was a fundamental, horrible, unending well of want in your soul that, if truly satisfied, would lead to great pain for all those you hold closest and, in turn, their absolute and total revilement of you?" and naturally as a person with no problems I don't relate to this in any way at all.
Whereas lycanthropy poses the question “what if there was a wild destructive urge buried inside you to shed all cares and social bonds and pretensions of civilisation in one fell swoop, to tear your whole stultifying life apart around yourself in a glorious bout of transformation, and then you woke up and had to deal with the consequences of that, both to yourself and to everyone around you?” and yeah, as a person with no issues whatsoever, naturally cannot relate there either. Heh.
