For those who have missed it, a tourist in Hawaii decided it would be fun to chuck a rock (a BIG rock) at a monk seal. He missed, but he was captured on video, and when told it was illegal to interfere with them, said "I'm rich, I can pay the fine."

Is the best part that he got doxxed? No.

Is the best part that he got tracked down by a local and beaten? No.

Arrested on state at federal charges, looking at up to 5 years and 50K? Nope.

The best part is the local city council's reaction.

And the best part of that is the look on the attorney's face.

Quick color comparison of living vs. dead skin colors on Brown and Black skin. This only has 4 colors but the technique is still applicable to any color.

(The colors are exaggerated to show the contrast as well.)

Instead of the usual warm tone brown skin has, to make it seem dead I opt for a greyish-blue. Take the color you'd use for when they're alive, add a grey/blue toned overlay, and voila!! The result should still be brown, just duller.

To make an overlay, select the color of the skin and then add a new layer. On that layer, color over the selected area with the cool tone. Lower the opacity until it looks how you like. This might differ depending on the software you use, but I use Ibis Paint x.

This is great super basic advice for people, but don't forget that all color theory is contextual! It don't matter if you bump up the saturation of your melanated character's skin tone if it is jarring within the color pallette of the piece - something that I've also seen a million times.

So whatever you do, make sure your character looks ALIVE, and find the hue/saturation range that doesn't make them stick out like a sore thumb.

And that's not even getting into the darker/lighter areas on the same body - look at photos of people and notice differences in the amount of melanin on their lips, palms, fingernails, etc, which varies from person to person even when they have the same skintone. Some people have hyperpigmentation around their eyes, and that's more common in some ethnicities than others.

Another thing to consider is that, especially for people in the olive skintone range, they will look a lot more pale and ashen during the wintertime or periods of intense hermitism especially in northern climates, so there's another scenario in which you might see someone with some melanin looking more ashen (same with different medical conditions like fuckin anemia etc. or if they're witnessing a horror and all the blood drains out of their face).

Just like with everything else in art, doing melanated skin well is a skill that you can build! Study different people, look at references upon references, practice and experiment! You'll learn that the fundamental principles are pretty much the same across the board. And I promise with time you'll get better, even if you deal with melanin deficiency :')
