When I worked at Target, it was during the winter, and this guy comes up to my register with a neutral-colored beanie with a fake fur pompom on top. All embarrassed and cringing, asking me if it was a woman’s hat and if it would be weird for him to get it.
I was like, “It’s just a hat. If you like it and you wear it, it’s not a woman’s hat, it’s just your hat. You don’t need to follow what the tag says if you don’t want to.” And it was like I gave him some kind of awe-inspiring wisdom he’d never considered, and he left with that hat on his head.
More cishets need to hear and internalize this message because so many of them are avoiding things that would make them happy just because of it having a label on it for whatever gender.

"rocky would hate stratt because she hurt his bestie" plausible, even likely. "rocky wouldn't hate stratt because he understands the stakes of needing to save the actual world" nuanced, intellectually stimulating. "stratt would hate rocky because her ex wife whom she killed is happier with him" intriguing, avant-garde.
gurathin struggling with fiber arts after giving them a shot on preservation but eventually finding a hitherto undiscovered aptitude for soldering wires into little sculptures. gives things like:
to mensah: a wireframe of her farmhouse
to bhardawaj: an outline of a view of her favorite gorge
to ratthi: a model of a wormhole diagram
to arada: her favorite insect (pin-lee sighs as they put it up on a prominent shelf in their living room)
to pin-lee: a mini portrait of pin-lee and arada on their wedding day (figured they wouldn't want to look at something work-related outside of work)
And! We need cashiers. And convenience stores. And I think it's kind of broken that society says people who want to do stuff like that have "low" ambition (not you OP, I get you're using it illustratively because that's what society labels said jobs) and don't deserve to live at the same standard as people with "high" ambitions.
If we need someone to do a job, that job is a role in the community and deserves not just a salary but cultural respect for the role.
"high" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve domineering and controlling others. "low" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve service to others. Have you noticed? Because I have noticed.
But serving others is actually more needed than controlling them.

When it’s announced that a Bay Area middle school teacher is one of three heroes sent to save the world, San Francisco clamors to rename things to “Ryland Grace.” Grover Cleveland Middle is quick to the draw, becoming Ryland Grace Middle the very next school year. Grace also gets a street, of course, a science wing at Stanford, a state park along the coast — by the time the Beetles return, you could probably throw a rock in San Francisco and hit a Ryland Grace reference.
Eva Stratt, meanwhile, is a stain. Graffiti tucked away in alleys and under bridges, forever painted over by the powers that be. A name meant to be forgotten. Stratt has always known this was part of the deal: after all, humanity needs a villain just as much as it needs its heroes. The best she can hope for is to be erased entirely on Earth.
And yet, light-years away, there is a beloved body of water, its surface dancing with artificial waves, that Ryland Grace wistfully refers to as The Sea of Stratt.
AMERICANS!!! DO NOT DO THIS TO FLOCK 'SECURITY' CAMERAS. REPOST AND SPREAD THE WORD
do not get IR blocking fabric or thick wool to cover your nose and mouth
do not get IR blocking sunglasses since facial recognition has moved up to targeting and identifying the upper face
do not avoid having your phone or any bluetooth devices around these cameras as they can detect and track those signals
do not buy cheap green lasers 1 milliwatt or above from etsy or walmart or amazon (i will not try and find a link if you ask)
do not use them to fry those fuckers from a distance damage the delicate inner sensors by pointing the beam in the lenses
AND unless you want to cost Flock more money in repairs, do not buy a small circle saw or a reciprocating saw and cut down the pole
OR do not climb said poles, spray paint on the solar panels, cover the lens with paint or a sticker, then use bolt cutters to sever the wires
when doing all these things, DO NOT avoid using latex gloves as fingerprints can leak through
DO NOT USE DEFLOCK TO FIND FLOCK SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS NEAR YOU
remember, flock is for YOUR safety :) even though crime rates have not gone down since they were implemented, they're being abused to track down exes and s/os, and many face pools or houses or schools or gymnasiums! Where there are no liscence plates to be found!
DO NOT DO THESE THINGS and enjoy a life under surveillance!
enjoy living in the country where 87,000 of these cameras were used to track down a woman who got an abortion!
enjoy living in the country where there's no consequences for a flock exec to watch a inside of a gymnastics place without their knowledge!
Remember, this is their American Dream.
EDIT: 53 cities have cancelled contracts with flock and are now turning to Axon, in which 🎺 invested 1-5 million dollars earlier this year. Do not limit your focus to one brand.
MB should be allowed to just pick Gurathin up like he is a sack of potatoes and put him where it wants him. Yes this man is over 6ft and not exactly small but that does not matter to MB. It's bed time now and I am putting you to bed and you...
can have whatever weird reaction you want. I don't care. I don't like you
The way Murderbot clearly interprets this as Ratthi asking if it's okay and Gurathin NOT asking if it's okay, but rather asking how the mission went, when in reality, I'd imagine Gurathin is also trying to find out if Murderbot is okay, he just doesn't want to outright say it.

Not all Pre–Corporation Rim sites are alien-contaminated, obviously. A lot of them became long-term occupation sites, the nucleus of what are now independent polities or Corporation Rim–owned planets (page 57, paragraph 6, Introduction to the History of Human Expansion, Volume I, eds. Bartheme, de la Vega, Shanmugam, et al, Cloud Sun Harbor University Press).
imagine MB seeing Gurathin using those spy-era skills. getting information out of someone with nothing but a smile and a touch to their lower back, and realizing Oh Fuck because there's nothing more hot than competency and this man is Competent
then it has to stew over it for the next six months ofc ofc. meanwhile gurathin is like ?
crucial to understanding the tone of this is that she's talking to graycris blue leader and means this as a completely earnest condemnation of graycris's shoddy managerial policies
One of the topics which circulates is whether TV PresAux are kinda incompetent compared to bookverse. And at first it seemed like all the comments I saw were about how were "hippies" (and being a "hippy" means being incompetent), and how they danced to music and painted the hab, etc. But dancing, loving music, wanting to add some personal touches to where you live, those things don't make anyone incompetent.
I do think there's something real though.
For example, consider TV Mensah investigating the missing map section.
First Bharadwaj gets chomped by a worm. Murderbot itself gets chomped pretty hard too, while rescuing her. Then the team figures out they can track the worms by ground vibrations. And then Mensah goes out to investigate. The sensors pick up another giant worm. Murderbot tells her to turn back and she won't.
That was really stupid! And yeah, she got important data and didn't get chomped. She was lucky.
And yet Mensah is not generally shown as incompetent or as a blind risk-taker throughout the show.
I claim the show is following these rules: PresAux should do or say something derpy if and only if:
it's funny
it's exciting
it's visually cool
Every less than perfect moment has to fit at least one of these categories.
Mensah climbing up a big hill mid panic attack, and then a giant worm rushes past her? All three! I know the story but I was still afraid she'd get chomped.
Ratthi hitting himself by not accounting for recoil? Funny! People can argue all day over whether it's realistic for someone to mishandle a gun that way. Of course it's realistic for someone who never handled a weapon and who is also extremely stressed to screw up. I'm amazed he kept his head as well as he did! Behold, Ratthi actually managing to fire at a moving target!
Also behold, Ratthi falling!
That scene didn't happen for realism. It happened to break tension. If it was for realism, moments like this would sometimes lead to tragedy.
Tragedy happens in the show, but never because of these obvious screw-up moments. Mensah doesn't get eaten by a worm, Ratthi doesn't get killed by the enemy SecUnit. That kind of outcome wouldn't be funny.
I think of it as "Roger Rabbit" rules, based on that movie, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" In the movie, living cartoons share a world with regular humans. There's a lengthy subplot involving a human and Roger Rabbit (cartoon) being handcuffed together. The human is going batty. Finally at a key moment, Roger just pulls his hand out of the cuffs using cartoon powers.
The human flips out and asks if he could do that any time??? And Roger says, "No, not any time. Only when it was funny."
And Roger was telling the truth! He really could only do that when it was funny!

okay, so it’s a lot like conceptual art, or like introspective meditation, at the risk of sounding pretentious
Like. It’s not so much about “the cards are a portal to a higher wisdom that knows more than me” thing- it’s more of a, “given the symbols drawn, could I interpret them posing a question or possibility or suggestion?” Followed by, “is this applicable to my current context? COULD it be?”
Like.
I don’t lay out á tarot hand and say “ah yes, the devil and the tower, I am about to be betrayed”
But I MAY lay out a hand and say, “okay, devil and the tower. Something treacherous and danger. Am I approaching a treacherous or risky situation in my life? What might be a tipping factor? Am I being deliberately reckless? Maybe I should spend some more time working on X project I’ e been thinking of before spending money on it” or “you know what, I HAVE been kind of uncomfortable with X thing, I should say something” or “yeah okay I KNOW Tom from work sucks to work with, I KNOW, yeah maybe I should consider ways of handling that”
Less of a magic oracle, more of a tool for doing literary analysis on real life. Like simplifying everything and laying it out flat so I can gain some distance to untangle my problems without in-your-head crap like projected feelings and social obligation getting in the way and muddying the waters.
So like. I don’t think tarot cards can legit tell the future, but I DO think that self-reflection, mindfulness, and consideration sometimes allow us to predict and calculate our own circumstances.
You can also use them to send yourself on little adventures.
I have a couple of decks that I like, but I don't usually use them because I don't usually need them. The last time I did a spread in a serious vein, the future slot was one of the cards that can read as basically a bountiful harvest.
Since this was in the beginning of April, I decided to give my local fruit guy a buzz to see how the lychee crop was shaping up. Shittily, it turned out, but he did have a bunch of passionfruit if I was interested in them.
He also had a few volunteers, if I was interested in them. Which I wasn't really, because I had my own more established passionfruit vines that were getting passionately chewed to ribbons by fritillary and swallowtail caterpillars, and these plants would be immediately reduced to nubs by the horde.
But I had a friend who'd just gotten the yard of her new house into the sort of shape where she could plant something fun, and these plants were a couple bucks a pop, so off they went to her place, where they grew. And grew. And grew. And grew.
Imagine, if you will, a world where passionfruit grow like zucchini. Where no matter how many the squirrels steal, there are still bags and bags and bags full twice a year. You're probably still not imagining enough passionfruit.
One season a hurricane blew most of the flowers clean off, and the animals were unusually aggressive about stealing fruit because the hurricane blew a lot of things' flowers clean off, and it still produced dozens that actually made it into human hands.
I have no idea what the fuck it is about these plants or her yard that's causing the twice-yearly bumper-crop, but it's also possible that passionfruit just have a looney-tunes sense of mischief and have gone for broke here because the tarot said bountiful harvest, boss! but they're basically unstoppable at this point.
Every time you go in a public place and something ISN’T disgusting it’s because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground it’s because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.
