The older I get the more I admire people who are earnestly, genuinely into whatever their thing is. I know it sounds like an annoying cliche but unless you're being cruel or hurtful there is really no need to be normal about things. The dude with the bad fake accent at the renaissance faire is having the time of his life. The people having photoshoots with their fashion dolls are loving it. The old lady with a yard unreasonably full of tacky ass lawn ornaments is having a blast, HOA be damned.
Don't waste your time being too cool to have fun, y'know?

i really really really really really like hadestown's repeated use of "eurydice was a hungry girl" because at first pass you might think oh, she's scrappy and street smart and her ambition is going to be the foil to orpheus's idealist romanticism. but nope! no she is literally hungry. she is starving. that is her motivator and everybody knows it. she loves, oh she does, but she can't be fucking blamed for fulfilling her physical needs first.
the thing is that pomegranates and blood and cannibalism and Fucked Up Deer are literally cool. like they're genuinely just sick as fuck and you simply cannot deny it without looking like a try-hard contrarian. they rule. sorry for thinking deep scarlet is an awesome color for things to be... as if it's my fault...
I see a lot of people online saying that Orpheus (Hadestown specifically) looks back because he loves Eurydice so much, that there isn't a world in which he doesn't look back, because the kind of man who wouldn't look back is not the kind of man who would go after her in the first place, etc. It's inevitable because of the strength of his love. But I don't see that as being the whole picture. Textually, it is explicitly his doubt in himself, and in the narrative of his life, that makes him look back: "Doubt Comes In", and he wonders, who is he that Hades would let him win? Who is he that Eurydice would follow him through the dark? Orpheus used to have a very simple, naive view of the world and his place in it. He was single-minded. At the beginning he tells Eurydice he's the man who is going to marry her because...well, that's how the story should go, and he is a poet first and foremost. Then, when he meets Hades, he is confronted by what Eurydice did and what the world is really like. He is shattered by the realisation that Eurydice wasn't just a simple, "pure" victim, but that she signed her life away. He is beaten down and loses faith, he goes into "Is this how it is?" after he's literally already done the impossible by reaching Hadestown on foot. He should have proven his abilities to himself by this point, but things aren't going the way they are supposed to and he doesn't know who he is anymore. He isn't just a boy in love with a girl who sings a song to bring back spring: he's a boy who didn't look back when he should have the first time when she called his name; she's a girl who chose her immediate needs over his grand ideals. His faith in a world where they make it back together is broken. He looks back because he doesn't trust himself or the narrative that he's found himself in. It's even more heartbreaking to me, because the Orpheus he was at the beginning of the musical might not have looked back, but that version of Orpheus doesn't make it out of the Underworld.
And to top it all off, the version of Eurydice from the beginning of the musical, before love softened her hard edges and made her trust him, probably wouldn't have followed Orpheus out of Hadestown. Eurydice really does trust him to get her out, because she's looking for the Orpheus she used to know and she's seen the power of his song and worldview.
Am I rambling into the void or does this make sense to anyone else?

The thing about Hadestown is the line “To know how it ends. And still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time” is an incredible way to describe most of life. We try because we have to believe that even when the ending is set in stone, it’s still worth trying. It’s still better to be a person who tried.
today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.
His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing
many women are excited to get old and weird, but i have great news that it's fully possible to become weird now, before you get old. just imagine the heights of weirdness you will be able to reach in fifty years if you get started now. that's what I think
Taliesin Jaffe is truly a fascinating individual because what do you mean you are fascinated in perfumes ? And you were a child actor ? And a goth kid ? And you collect bones ? And action figures ? And you're a comic fan ? And you learned japanese and lived in Japan ? And you shortly built models professionally? And you gave Erika Ishii her first undercut live on Geek and Sundry ? And you have a collection of weird ass books from other centuries on all things kinda occult ? And you're a voice actor and director, and also a professional DnD player ? And you drop one liner like " I hope you find someone to mourn you when you are gone. Respectfully" and " Time ! Like a relentless river, flows ceaselessly eroding the very essence of our existence until we are about fragments, carried away in the abysses of oblivion..." ? And you have a truly worrying knowledge of X-Men and DC comics ? And you have fabulous hairs ? And a wonderful fashion sense ?
The guy is 2 centuries old, at LEAST... Or he's had 9 lives, like a cat... Idk...

possibly a hot take but I waited until I'd eaten and my blood sugar was normal before posting so everybody be proud of me for that first
if you consider the timeline of cartoon production, you can probably make a more or less accurate assumption that Sam Riegel was going through treatment for throat cancer around the time TLOVM season 4 was being recorded (hence the lack of Scanlan + his vocal struggles in-character when he did appear) so I've absolutely bit my tongue on it but the contempt I have for everybody who whined about a lack of Scanlan this past season is Not Small
this is a rant about my goat pike. this is also my personal blog that gets an average of maybe 5 occasional notes so please do not take a fat shit on my opinions because I will cry
wow. holy wow. oh shittings. well we can for sure know now that some people will beg and beg and beg for morally grey characters and then vomit and scream and cry when pike trickfoot pulls up to the function with 3 vestiges.
holy shit the amount of stuff I've seen on here just straight up DRAGGING her is insane dude. suddenly complex characters dont exist and the second one does something people dont agree with they're rampaging like bulls stuck in a red room.
dude i get it. obviously I do; Pike's actions were shitty as HELL, MAN. struggling with depression and alcoholism and repressing your emotions the entire time is gonna do that to you. she's a hypocrite at times, like blaming vm for never visiting but never visiting wilhand herself. choosing to follow the WO despite how his actions resulted in grog and wilhand's deaths after repeatedly showing her disdain and hatred for him [WO]. mourning over being rejected by scanlan even though she pushed him away at first in s3, causing him to lay off.
but that. is. the. point. she's switched places with what she hated. all her anger and vengeance led her to a point where she became quite literally what she was angry at. it's a perfect way to showcase self-hatred by literally growing into the person you once would've judged or looked down on.
not to mention the WO is super manipulative. every single cult leader is, that's like the main fuckass point of most cults: having a super charismatic leader. she did not trust him in ANY way at first, and pike at the beginning of ep10 would probably hate pike mid ep12, when shes fully lost it and gave in to the WO because she wanted her friend back. if I was in Pike's position, I would've chosen to help him ascend for the price of getting my best friend and possibly the father figure who raised me for all my life back too.
Im less mad abt people judging this specific decision as opposed to shitting on her Healer's Lament, because sacrificing essentially the whole world and (in)directly causing Vax's death just to save Grog is what makes her the perfect morally grey character and an imperfect victim of the WO's manipulation. it also makes her pretty unlikeable from a moral point of view because aw shit there goes exandria. world's fucked anyway. but being less mad does not equal to not being mad, because some people lack media literacy!! and a lot of it!!
pike's arc being completely new and different from the campaign makes it expendable for the writers and unexpected for the consumers; people are mad because she's not the same person from the campaign. essentially, mad because she's not 'perfect little pike', so it's safe to say her lament is well enough directed towards most of those people too. you gotta at least try and read a little into the lines before you run her over with a truck because poor girl is FINALLY getting a unique and interesting arc.
zerxus arc was cool but lasted one episode and only showed up again during that season like maybe thrice?? this arc lasts the whole season. a whole season of her being down in the dumps because she knows she's not good enough. she knows that vox machina use her for healing (she's right, in many ways. genuinely cannot remember the last time someone other than grog or scanlan had a meaningful uplifting conversation with her that actually lasted over two sentences) and just wants someone to heal and protect her in the way she does for others. specifically her. and this sucks for her because she most likely doesn't realise she's shutting people out too much to be helped and won't show her emotions. she doesn't want to be weak.
this is getting long so I'm wrapping it up here lmao. she's good representation of morally grey characters, and just the absolute immense hate isn't all that necessary and could be toned down a bit if some people just took a second to read between the lines. and that sounds insulting but trust me - this is the bare minimum if you wanna complain or critique, to at least know what you're on about.

One time a friend told me that if she wanted to have a chill night she would come to me and ask for tea and a book to read. I didn’t like tea at the time, but I always made sure my cupboards had them in case she needed a quiet night. One time I told my boss that I loved oranges, but couldn’t peel them because of my nails. For a year he made sure to peel me one at least once a week. Once my friends gave me a made up superlative of “most likely to have a pen they could borrow” and ever since I’ve made sure I always carry a pen with me. A long time ago, my high school librarian told me that no one would care what my grade in my sophomore chemistry class was if I’m bringing them doughnuts and asking them about their day.
Sometimes friendship is about carrying pens and peeling oranges. But the point is, surrounding yourself with people who you want to do the little things for. The point of it all is bringing in the doughnuts because you’ve found the people who deserve the doughnuts.
